There is not enough evidence here to say whether Microsoft or NVIDIA is more likely to double an investor’s money. NVIDIA reported faster fiscal 2026 growth and has more direct exposure to AI computing demand; Microsoft reported growth across a broader cloud and productivity business. Those operating results do not tell you what either stock will return from its current price. A credible comparison needs a defined time horizon, synchronized current valuations, and an explicit way to assess future earnings and cash flow.

What does “double your money” mean for these stocks?

It means earning a 100% total return over a specified period, not merely owning a company whose revenue grows quickly. The time horizon matters: to double in three years requires about a 26% annualized price return; over five years, about 14.9%. Those are mathematical equivalents, not forecasts, and they exclude dividends. Total return can include dividends as well as share-price changes.

A company can grow quickly while its stock underperforms if investors had already priced in even faster growth. Conversely, a slower-growing business can deliver strong returns if its earnings and cash flow exceed expectations. That is why business performance alone cannot establish which stock is more likely to double.

What do the companies’ reported results show?

The figures below are company-reported fiscal 2026 results, except where the source is identified as the fiscal 2026 results announcement. The businesses have different mixes and reporting measures, so the figures are context—not a like-for-like forecast of shareholder returns.

Measure Microsoft NVIDIA
Revenue growth Revenue grew 18%, or $50.1 billion; the annual filing attributed growth to Microsoft Cloud. Revenue was $215.9 billion, up 65% year over year; the annual filing described growth led by Compute & Networking and data-center demand.
Margin measure Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage was 66%. The annual filing said it decreased amid AI infrastructure investment and product usage, partly offset by efficiency gains. Gross margin was 71.1%, down 3.9 percentage points year over year.
Other reported scale or earnings figures The fiscal 2026 results announcement said Azure annual revenue exceeded $100 billion and Microsoft 365 Copilot had more than 30 million paid seats. These are company-reported figures. Operating income was $130.4 billion and diluted earnings per share were $4.90.

These are historical results, not estimates of future growth or investment returns. Microsoft’s Azure and Copilot figures indicate reported scale and adoption; they do not by themselves show whether the cost of AI infrastructure will earn an adequate return. NVIDIA’s reported growth reflects strong recent demand, but does not establish that demand or pricing will persist.

How do their AI businesses differ?

Microsoft: AI within a broader cloud and software business

Microsoft combines cloud services, productivity software and other businesses. Its reported fiscal 2026 growth was driven by Microsoft Cloud, while its results also show the investment burden of expanding AI infrastructure: Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage was 66% amid those investments and usage. A broader mix means Microsoft’s results are not solely a measure of AI accelerator demand, but it does not automatically make the stock safer or more likely to rise.

NVIDIA: more direct exposure to AI computing infrastructure

NVIDIA has more direct exposure to accelerator, networking and data-center demand. That can make its results more sensitive to spending on AI computing capacity, including changes in demand and pricing. Its fiscal 2026 results show both rapid revenue growth and a decline in gross margin compared with the prior year; neither result guarantees the future direction of growth or profitability.

What could keep either stock from doubling?

Microsoft’s investment and execution risks

Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K describes difficulty forecasting AI and cloud demand. Building too much infrastructure can leave capacity underused; building too little can constrain service. The filing also identifies uncertainty around training and inference costs, components, energy, competition, pricing, and whether customer usage will generate returns commensurate with investment.

NVIDIA’s demand and pricing risks

NVIDIA’s fiscal 2027 second-quarter Form 10-Q warns that lower-than-expected demand for AI computing or lower pricing could reduce revenue. Its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K also describes exposure to rapid platform transitions and changes in AI infrastructure demand. Strong recent growth is evidence of recent demand, not assurance that customers will keep spending at the same rate or that NVIDIA can preserve pricing and margins.

Valuation and expectations

Even if a company delivers strong operating results, its stock can disappoint if those results fall short of what the share price already assumes. A useful comparison needs current, same-date figures for both companies and consistent definitions—for example, trailing price-to-earnings alongside trailing price-to-free-cash-flow, or forward multiples for both. It also needs expectations for earnings and free cash flow, including the effects of reinvestment, capital intensity and changes in share count. No synchronized current valuation comparison is established here, so assigning either stock a higher probability of doubling would overstate what the evidence supports.

How to compare the stocks for a specific time horizon

  1. Choose the horizon. Decide whether the question is about three years, five years or another period. A doubling target means a different annualized return at each horizon.
  2. Use the same valuation date and share class. Compare both stocks using prices and valuation inputs from the same date; do not mix market quotes from different dates or trailing and forward multiples.
  3. Test shareholder growth, not revenue alone. Assess earnings and free cash flow alongside revenue. Consider how much cash must be reinvested, whether capital needs are increasing, and whether share count changes affect per-share results.
  4. Assess whether AI demand can endure profitably. Consider customer spending, competition from alternative chips or cloud platforms, pricing pressure, and whether each company can deliver capacity at attractive margins.
  5. Ask what expectations are embedded in the price. Compare the growth and profitability implied by each valuation with plausible outcomes over the chosen horizon. A higher growth rate is not enough if it is already more than reflected in the stock price.

This framework can organize an investment decision, but it does not create a reliable probability estimate without current inputs and a transparent forecasting method. Company filings report results and disclose risks; they cannot establish that either stock will double.
