Most blurry Snipping Tool screenshots are caused by what happens before or after capture—not by a hidden “low-quality” switch in Snipping Tool. First check that Windows is using your monitor’s native resolution, identified as Recommended in Settings > System > Display. Then compare the original saved snip with the version that looks soft after pasting, resizing, editing, or sharing. A separate exception applies to games using Windows Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR): Snipping Tool generally captures the game window rather than the larger upscaled image shown on screen.

Why a Snipping Tool screenshot can look blurry
The display is running below its native resolution
Your monitor can accept several resolutions, but a setting below the panel’s native resolution makes text and interface details less sharp. Microsoft notes that lower-than-native resolutions can also make an image appear stretched, centered with black borders, or otherwise altered. This is the first setting to check when the entire screen looks soft before you capture it. Microsoft’s display-resolution guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
The image becomes soft after capture
Snipping Tool copies a capture to the clipboard and lets you edit and save it. If the saved file is crisp but a pasted or shared copy is blurry, the destination may have resized or processed the image. That diagnosis is an inference from comparing the documented capture stages; it is not a claim that every app compresses screenshots. Microsoft documents the copy, edit, and save workflow in its screen-content instructions.

A small crop was enlarged
A screenshot contains a finite number of pixels. Enlarging a small crop cannot create additional detail, so text and fine lines can look softer. Capture a larger region or the whole window when the final image will be displayed at a larger size. Snipping Tool supports rectangular, window, and full-screen modes, plus cropping and a Paint handoff for further sizing and enhancement. See the supported modes and editing workflow.
Auto SR is changing what you see in a game
Windows Automatic Super Resolution can display a game at a larger, reconstructed resolution than the game window itself. Microsoft says Snipping Tool and similar capture tools generally capture the game window, not that larger Auto SR image. A screenshot can therefore look lower-resolution than the frame you were viewing. This explanation applies only when Auto SR is active for the game; it is not a general Snipping Tool limitation. Fix blurry Snipping Tool screenshots: a diagnostic sequence
- Identify where the blur first appears. Take a fresh snip, save it as an image, and inspect that saved file before pasting it into another application. If the saved file is sharp, compare it with the pasted or shared version. The difference tells you to investigate the destination’s resizing or processing rather than the capture itself.
- Set the active display to its recommended resolution. Open Settings > System > Display. If more than one monitor is connected, select the display where the content appears. Under Scale & layout, open Display resolution and choose the option marked Recommended. Confirm the change when Windows asks. Microsoft distinguishes resolution from scale: resolution selects the pixels used by the display, while scale changes the size of text and apps. The documented sharpness warning concerns a resolution below the monitor’s native resolution, not scale by itself. Use Microsoft’s resolution and layout page if the labels differ on your build.
- Capture enough of the original content. Choose window or full-screen capture for a document, dashboard, or application that will be viewed large. Use a rectangular crop only when the selected area already contains enough pixels for its final size. Avoid repeatedly enlarging a small crop.
- Save before editing or sharing. Open the saved original at 100% zoom. Then inspect the copy in the target app or service. If only the second version is soft, look for an automatic “fit,” “compress,” “optimize,” or image-resize setting in that destination. The exact control depends on the app, so do not change Snipping Tool settings until this comparison shows the capture itself is the problem.
- Check the gaming context. If the source is a game using Auto SR, temporarily compare a capture with Auto SR disabled or capture a non-game window. A difference here is expected from the way Windows captures the game window, as described in Microsoft’s Auto SR documentation.
Resolution and scale: what to change—and what not to change
Display resolution determines how many pixels Windows sends to the monitor. Select the value Windows marks Recommended for the display in use. A lower value can make text less sharp.
Scale controls the apparent size of text and apps. Increasing scale can make interface elements easier to read, but it does not add pixels to a screenshot and is not a universal cure for blur. Keep scale at the value that gives you a usable interface, and troubleshoot a lower-than-native resolution separately. Capture choices that preserve readable detail
Use window capture for applications
Window capture avoids accidentally selecting a narrow or scaled portion of an application. It is useful for support tickets and documentation where the complete title bar or interface context matters.
Use full-screen capture for large layouts
Full-screen capture preserves the complete desktop at the resolution Windows is currently using. It creates a larger file than a small crop, but gives you more pixels if the recipient needs to zoom in.
Use rectangular capture deliberately
Drag around the exact content you need, but size the rectangle with the final use in mind. A crop that looks fine at its original size may become visibly soft when enlarged in a presentation or web page.
Use freeform capture only when the shape matters
Freeform selection is useful for an irregular area, but its edges and resulting dimensions may not suit a document or image viewer that scales everything to a fixed box. For technical screenshots, a rectangular or window capture is usually easier to inspect.

When the problem is the destination file
Keep the original saved snip as your reference. If it is crisp, check these points in the app or service where blur appears:
- Whether the image was automatically resized to fit a page, message, or upload limit.
- Whether a preview is being shown at a lower resolution than the downloaded original.
- Whether an editor exported a smaller JPEG or applied an optimization step.
- Whether the image was enlarged after a crop.
These are workflow checks, not universal claims about a particular application. The reliable test is a side-by-side comparison of the original saved image and the destination copy.

The saved file is blurry immediately
- Return to Settings > System > Display and select the display-resolution value marked Recommended.
- Retake the image using window or full-screen capture instead of enlarging a small crop.
- If it is a game, determine whether Auto SR is active.
The saved file is sharp, but a pasted image is blurry
- Open the saved original at 100% zoom.
- Compare pixel dimensions with the pasted copy.
- Inspect the destination for automatic resizing, compression, or preview scaling.
Only one monitor produces soft captures
- Select that monitor explicitly in Display settings.
- Check its own resolution; multi-monitor setups can use different values.
- Capture a known text window on each display to isolate the affected screen.
The screenshot looks different from a game frame
Check for Auto SR. Microsoft’s documented behavior is that capture tools generally record the game window rather than the larger Auto SR image displayed to the player. See the feature’s limitations.
What you can conclude from the test
If a fresh saved snip is clear after the display is set to its recommended resolution, the original issue was likely the display setting, capture size, or game context. If it is clear in the saved file but not after pasting or sharing, focus on the destination workflow. Microsoft’s documentation establishes the capture, save, resolution, scale, and Auto SR behaviors; it does not provide a universal percentage for how often any one cause occurs. Your monitor, Windows build, source application, and destination determine the result.

Does changing Windows Scale make Snipping Tool screenshots sharper?

Should I use PNG or JPEG to fix a blurry snip?
