Use IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]) when the picture is available at a web URL. The right choice depends on whether the image should behave like cell data, float above the grid, or update from a URL.
Choose the placement before you insert
Google Sheets has three practical ways to display a picture. The desktop menu lets you select an image from your computer or another available source and place it in a cell or above the cells. The IMAGE function displays an image from a URL inside a cell.
| Method | Best for | Important behavior | Size control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image in cell | Product catalogs, contact sheets, inventory rows and other structured data | The image belongs to one cell; that cell cannot also contain text | Resize the row or column, or move the image to another cell |
| Image over cells | A logo, annotation, diagram or picture that should float over the grid | The image is a separate object above the grid and can be dragged | Use the on-image controls to move or resize it |
IMAGE formula |
Images already hosted at a URL, especially when the URL is stored in a column | The result is displayed in a cell and can be recalculated when the URL changes | Choose one of four formula modes; the formula does not resize the cell |
Insert an image from the Sheets menu on a computer
- Open the spreadsheet and click the destination cell. For an image that will sit above the grid, click near the area where you want its upper-left corner.
- Choose Insert > Image.
- Select Image in cell or Image over cells. Make this choice deliberately; the two objects behave differently after insertion.
- Select an image source and choose the picture. Depending on the source, click Open or Select.
- Wait for the image to appear. A large upload or a slow source can take a moment.
Image in cell
An in-cell image is attached to the selected cell. It is useful when every row represents a record and the image should travel with that row. Because the cell is occupied by the image, you cannot put text in the same cell. Put a label in an adjacent cell instead.
To put an in-cell image somewhere else, use cut and paste on the image or its cell. Changing the row height or column width changes the available cell area, so adjust those dimensions when the picture looks too small.

Image over cells
An over-cells image is a floating object layered above the spreadsheet grid. It can cover several columns or rows while the underlying cells continue to hold data. Drag it to reposition it and use the image controls to resize it. This is the better option for a dashboard logo, a callout, or a diagram that must not consume a data cell.
Google Sheets also lets you move an image between the two placement types through the image’s menu. If you need a floating picture to become row data, convert it to an in-cell image; if an in-cell picture is interfering with text, move it over the cells.
Paste a copied picture
You can copy an image from your computer or from the web and paste it into a spreadsheet. Click the sheet, paste, and allow a moment for the picture to appear. Sheets then treats it as an image object; if the resulting placement is not what you need, use the image menu to move it between in-cell and over-cells placement.
Display a URL-based image with the IMAGE function
When a picture is already available at an image URL, enter a formula in the target cell:
=IMAGE("https://example.com/image.png")
The URL must include a protocol such as https://. It can be quoted text in the formula or a reference to a cell containing the URL. If the URL is in cell A2, use:
=IMAGE(A2)
This approach is convenient for a table with one URL per row: put URLs in one column and formulas in the next. Updating a URL can then change the displayed picture without uploading a replacement through the menu.

IMAGE syntax
The complete syntax is IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]). The optional arguments determine how the image fits the cell:
| Mode | Result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (default) | Fits inside the cell while preserving the image’s aspect ratio | Use this first when you need the whole picture without distortion |
| 2 | Stretches or compresses the image to fill the cell, ignoring aspect ratio | Use only when filling the exact cell shape matters more than proportions |
| 3 | Displays the image at its original size | Useful when the source dimensions are known; the cell may crop it |
| 4 | Uses custom pixel dimensions supplied by height and width | Use for a consistent thumbnail size across rows |
For custom dimensions, supply both measurements, for example =IMAGE("https://example.com/image.png",4,120,180). Formula modes do not automatically enlarge the row or column. If the image is too small, increase the row height or column width separately. If it is distorted, switch from mode 2 to mode 1.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImage formats, size limits and URL restrictions
- Images inserted through the desktop menu can be PNG, JPG or GIF and must be under 50 MB.
- SVG is not supported by the menu insertion workflow.
- For the
IMAGEfunction, URLs hosted atdrive.google.comcannot be used. - SVG is not supported by
IMAGEeither, so use a supported raster image URL. - A URL must be reachable in the form supplied to the formula and must include its protocol.
If a source is a Drive file, do not assume that copying its sharing link will work with IMAGE; the documented restriction specifically excludes drive.google.com URLs. Download the picture and insert it through the menu, or use an image URL on a supported host.
Adjust size without losing the picture
For menu-inserted images
Select the image and use its handles or menu controls to resize it. An in-cell image is constrained by the cell’s dimensions, so widen the column or increase the row height when needed. An over-cells image can span multiple rows and columns and can be moved independently of the grid.
For IMAGE formulas
Start with mode 1. It preserves proportions and fits the complete image inside the cell. Use mode 2 only for a deliberate stretch, mode 3 when cropping is acceptable, and mode 4 when you need fixed pixel dimensions. None of these modes changes the underlying row height or column width.
Add an image on Android, iPhone or iPad
The Google Sheets mobile app uses the same in-cell versus over-cells decision.

- Open the spreadsheet in the Sheets app and select the destination area.
- Tap Insert Image.
- Choose whether to place the picture in a cell or over cells.
- Select the source and then choose the image.
- Use the image controls to move, resize or delete it when necessary.
Choose in-cell placement for a picture that belongs to one record. Choose over-cells placement when it should float above the grid. If the mobile interface presents slightly different prompts, preserve that placement decision; it determines how the image behaves later on desktop.
Common problems and fixes
The image will not upload
- Check the file type: PNG, JPG and GIF are supported for menu insertion; SVG is not.
- Check the file size: menu-inserted images must be under 50 MB.
- Wait for the upload to finish before switching sheets or closing the app.
The formula returns an error or no image
- Confirm that the URL starts with
http://orhttps://. - Make sure the formula contains quoted text or a cell reference, such as
=IMAGE(A2). - Replace a
drive.google.comURL with a supported image URL; Drive-hosted URLs are excluded forIMAGE. - Use PNG, JPG or GIF rather than SVG.
The image is cropped
Mode 3 keeps the original dimensions, so a cell smaller than the source can crop the result. Switch to mode 1 or enlarge the row and column. Mode 4 can also give you predictable dimensions.
The image is stretched
Mode 2 intentionally ignores aspect ratio. Change the formula to mode 1, or remove the mode argument and use the default behavior.
I need text and an image in the same row
Keep the picture in one cell and the text in a neighboring cell. An in-cell image cannot share its cell with text. If text must appear underneath or beside a visual without changing the data layout, use an over-cells image and leave the underlying cells for text.

The picture covers important data
Select the image and drag it to an empty area, resize it, or move it to an in-cell placement. For dashboards, reserve a dedicated area of blank cells before inserting an over-cells object.
A practical decision workflow
- Is the source a local file or a web URL? Use the menu for a selected file; use
IMAGEwhen a supported URL is the natural source. - Should the picture belong to one record? Choose in-cell placement and keep labels in adjacent cells.
- Should it float independently? Choose over-cells placement.
- Do you need repeatable thumbnails? Store URLs in a column and use
IMAGE(url,4,height,width), then size the rows and columns to match. - Do you need the complete picture visible? Start with mode 1 rather than mode 2 or 3.
Or skip the browser setup
If the picture you need is on a webpage, ScreenshotNeo can capture that page as an image before you add it to Sheets. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG or WebP; download the result and insert the file with Insert > Image. Its cleanup steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can one spreadsheet use all three image methods?
Yes. A sheet can contain uploaded in-cell images, floating over-cells images and formula-driven images at the same time. Choose the method independently for each picture based on its source and role.
Will changing a source URL change an IMAGE result?
When the formula references a cell, changing that cell’s URL gives Sheets a new input to display. Keep the URL column separate from the image column so it is easy to audit or replace links.
Which method is easiest to hand off to another editor?
Use in-cell images for row-by-row records and keep descriptive text in adjacent cells. This makes the relationship between each picture and its data visible without relying on the position of a floating object.
