A thumbnail is a compact preview image that helps someone recognize content or decide whether to open it. The right design depends on what it represents and where it appears: a video player, search card, social feed, profile grid, article link, product catalog or listing. There is no single universal thumbnail size.
This guide explains the major thumbnail types, the specifications that are established for YouTube, how cropping and metadata affect website previews, and a repeatable workflow for making images readable and accurate on every surface.
What is a thumbnail?
A thumbnail is a reduced or cropped representation of a larger piece of content. It can stand for a video, article, photograph, profile, product or listing. Its job is identification and orientation first; encouraging a click is useful only when the image truthfully represents what follows.
The same source image may be rendered several ways. A feed may crop the sides, a profile grid may use a square window, and a video player may place controls or text over the image. Treat the source artwork as a master, then check each destination’s current preview rather than assuming one export works everywhere.

Main types of thumbnails
Video thumbnails and covers
A video thumbnail appears before playback in a player, search result, recommendation card or subscription feed. It normally needs a clear subject, strong contrast and a visual idea that can be understood at a small size. YouTube lets eligible creators upload a custom image or choose a suggested frame. Its guidance recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, in JPG or PNG format. Upload limits vary by device, so check the live upload interface at YouTube’s current instructions.
Shorts use a different shape: YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16) with a minimum height of 640 pixels. A vertical video supplied with a 16:9 custom thumbnail can instead receive an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. Inspect those surfaces after publishing.
Website video thumbnails
Embedded or indexed videos use preview images in a page’s player and may appear in search features. Google Search Central says a video must have a valid thumbnail to be eligible for video features; eligibility is not a guarantee of a rich result. Keep the image reference valid and make the thumbnail match the actual video.
Article, image and link-preview thumbnails
News cards, blog listings, search results and shared links often show a compact image beside a headline. These systems have different containers and cropping rules, and the available evidence does not establish one current, universal social-sharing dimension. Choose an adaptable master image, reserve safe space around the subject, and verify the preview generated by the site or service where the link is shared.

Social feeds can crop a landscape image, while a profile grid may show only a square center. A platform can also add labels, badges or playback controls. The Office for National Statistics design manual uses 1:1 artboards for its Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn post graphics and 1280 × 720 pixels for its YouTube thumbnail artwork. Those are ONS production choices, not universal requirements; consult each service’s current creator documentation.
Product and listing thumbnails
Catalog and marketplace thumbnails identify an item among many results. Consistent background, scale and viewing angle help comparison, while the product itself should remain recognizable after reduction. Marketplace-specific dimensions, file limits and background policies vary, so use the destination’s current seller or developer rules.

How thumbnail specifications differ
| Use | Established guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube standard video | 3840 × 2160, 16:9, minimum 640-pixel width; JPG or PNG | Device upload limits and how the image is displayed on each surface |
| YouTube Shorts | 2160 × 3840, 9:16, minimum 640-pixel height | Whether a surface substitutes an automatically generated 4:5 image |
| YouTube API image variants | Examples include 120 × 90 default, 320 × 180 medium, 480 × 360 high, 640 × 480 standard and 1280 × 720 maxres | Whether a requested variant exists for that resource and source resolution |
| ONS social-art examples | 1:1 for its Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn posts; 1280 × 720 for its YouTube artwork | The platform’s current specification; these are ONS choices |
| Other social, marketplace and link surfaces | No single current dimension established here | Container ratio, crop, format, byte ceiling and moderation rules |
The YouTube Data API documentation warns that image sizes differ by resource and original resolution. Do not assume that a maximum-resolution URL exists for every video or channel: see the variant rules.
What makes a thumbnail effective?
Make the subject obvious
Use one dominant person, object or scene where possible. A clear silhouette and separation from the background survive reduction better than a busy collage. YouTube advises avoiding overly complex designs and checking the result on different devices.

Text should support the title, not repeat a paragraph. Use a few words with strong contrast, generous margins and a type size that remains readable in a small card. Test the actual thumbnail at the approximate on-screen size, including on a phone.
Match the promise
The title and image should set an accurate expectation. A dramatic image that never appears in the video can win an initial click but damages trust and makes performance data harder to interpret. YouTube’s thumbnail and title guidance emphasizes accurate representation.
Leave safe areas
Keep faces, logos and essential words away from edges where responsive crops or interface badges may cover them. Build a master at the largest required resolution, then create placement-specific crops rather than stretching a small derivative.
Accessibility, search and metadata
For informative website images, write descriptive alternative text that conveys the image’s purpose. “Laptop showing a checkout form” is more useful than “thumbnail” or a keyword list. Decorative images can use empty alternative text when the surrounding text already supplies the information.

For video search, ensure the thumbnail URL is valid and associated with the correct video data. Google Search Central’s Video SEO guidance treats a valid thumbnail as a requirement for eligibility in video features. Eligibility does not promise a particular ranking or appearance.
A practical thumbnail workflow
- Identify the job. Decide whether the image represents a video, article, product, profile or larger photograph, and name the exact surface: player, feed, search card, grid or catalog.
- Check current rules. Read the destination’s documentation immediately before export. Record ratio, pixel dimensions, accepted formats, byte ceiling, upload-device limits and any moderation restrictions.
- Plan the crop. Place the subject and important text inside a safe central area. Prepare separate landscape, square or vertical variants when the interface demands them.
- Design for reduction. Remove needless detail, use readable type and test at phone size and desktop size. Check both light and dark surroundings if the platform supplies them.
- Export correctly. Use the required dimensions and a supported format. Keep a high-quality master so you can re-export instead of enlarging a compressed thumbnail.
- Preview after upload. Inspect mobile and desktop views, search cards, profile grids and any embedded player. Look for unexpected crops, overlays, compression or a substituted frame.
- Measure in context. YouTube recommends examining click-through rate in relevant discovery locations: Home and Suggested for general audiences, or the Subscriptions feed for subscribers during the first 24 hours, using videos with above-average impressions as context. This is YouTube-specific guidance, not a universal benchmark.
YouTube publishes the statement, “90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails.” It is YouTube’s own undated help-page statistic, accessed in 2026; it does not establish that custom thumbnails alone caused the performance or that the figure applies to other platforms.
Why does a thumbnail look cropped on mobile?
- The container changed ratio: a square grid or vertical feed is showing a center crop of your landscape master. Create a dedicated crop with the subject inside the safe area.
- Interface overlays were added: duration labels, badges or buttons cover a corner. Move essential text and faces inward.
- A platform substituted an image: YouTube can show an automatically generated 4:5 image for some vertical-video surfaces instead of a 16:9 custom thumbnail.
- The source is too small: upscaling introduces blur. Re-export from the original artwork at the documented dimensions.
Create a website thumbnail yourself with a browser
For a website or article preview, open the page at the intended viewport, dismiss consent dialogs, hide transient overlays, and capture the visible or full page. In a browser’s developer tools, use responsive mode to test mobile and desktop widths, then save a PNG or WebP and crop it for the destination. Check that lazy-loaded images have appeared and that fonts have finished rendering before capture. If you automate this with Playwright or another browser runner, wait for a reliable selector or network idle state instead of using an arbitrary very short delay.
Review the saved image at the target card size, add descriptive alt text when publishing it as an informative website image, and retain the original capture so you can produce another crop later.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, and its capture options cover full pages, a CSS-selected element, custom viewport and device presets, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, blocked requests, cookies, headers, geolocation, timezone, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call.
It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and all parameters. Replace the example URL with the page you need to turn into a thumbnail:

Thumbnail troubleshooting checklist
Upload rejected
Confirm the file type, pixel dimensions, byte limit and device-specific upload rule. Re-export rather than renaming an unsupported file.
Image is blurry
Use the original master, meet the platform’s minimum dimensions and avoid repeatedly recompressing an already compressed file.
Text cannot be read
Shorten the wording, increase contrast and test at the smallest real display size. Remove decorative text that competes with the subject.
Wrong frame appears in search
Check that the video has a valid thumbnail reference and allow time for indexing. A search surface may choose a different representation from the player.
Automated capture is blank or obstructed
Wait for the page’s content selector or network idle, handle consent UI, and hide cookie, newsletter and chat elements. Check the response verdict and billing headers when using an API.
FAQ
What size should my YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in 16:9 with at least 640 pixels of width for standard videos. Shorts use 2160 × 3840 pixels in 9:16 with at least 640 pixels of height. Verify the current upload screen because limits can change.
Can I use one thumbnail for every platform?
You can reuse the artwork, but not safely assume the same crop, ratio or overlays. Keep a master and export variants for each placement.
Do custom thumbnails guarantee more views?
No. YouTube’s 90% statement is a platform-published observation about best-performing videos, not a causal test or a cross-platform guarantee. Use the relevant analytics and compare like-for-like placements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size should my YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in 16:9 for standard videos and 2160 × 3840 pixels in 9:16 for Shorts; check the current upload interface for limits.
Why does my thumbnail look cropped on mobile?
Mobile surfaces often use a different container ratio or add overlays. Create a placement-specific crop and keep essential subjects and text in a central safe area.
Are YouTube API thumbnail sizes guaranteed?
No. The Data API says available variants depend on the resource and original resolution, so a max-resolution image may not exist.
