Stripe vs. PayPal for WordPress: Which Payment Method Is Best?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither Stripe nor PayPal is universally best for WordPress. Choose based on your setup (WordPress.com or self-hosted WooCommerce), seller country, total processor and platform fees, customers’ preferred payment methods, subscription requirements, and checkout/security responsibilities.

First, identify which WordPress payment setup you have

“WordPress” describes two materially different payment environments. A self-hosted WordPress site usually uses WooCommerce gateway extensions. WordPress.com offers its own PayPal Payment Buttons and Stripe-backed Payments blocks, with plan eligibility and platform fees.

Self-hosted WordPress with WooCommerce

WooCommerce’s official Stripe extension connects your store to a Stripe account. The extension has no setup cost or monthly fee, but Stripe’s processing charges still apply. WooCommerce also offers PayPal as a gateway option; its account requirements, terms and fees are set by PayPal rather than by WooCommerce.

WordPress.com

The PayPal Payment Buttons block is intended for collecting payments or donations and, according to WordPress.com’s guide, requires a Premium, Business or Commerce plan. Free and Personal plans must upgrade.

The Stripe-backed Payments block accepts one-time payments and recurring subscriptions. WordPress.com adds a plan-based payment fee to Stripe’s processing fee. For a full store with cart, tax, shipping and order management, WordPress.com directs users toward WooCommerce instead of a simple PayPal button.

Stripe and PayPal compared

Decision area Stripe PayPal
WooCommerce integration Official extension; no extension setup or monthly fee. Stripe sets processing fees. Available as a WooCommerce gateway; PayPal sets account terms and processing fees.
Payment methods Documented WooCommerce support includes cards, Apple Pay, WeChat Pay, Cash App Pay, Alipay, Boleto, SEPA, Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna. Availability varies by country, customer location and configuration. Useful where customers specifically want to pay from a PayPal account; the supplied documentation does not establish a universal method list or regional availability.
Subscriptions Can support recurring billing through the relevant WooCommerce subscription and gateway configuration. WooCommerce documentation lists a PayPal gateway extension as supporting automatic recurring payments, but capabilities vary by gateway and payment method.
WordPress.com option Payments block supports one-time payments and subscriptions, subject to plan terms and additional platform fees. Payment Buttons block supports payments or donations on eligible WordPress.com plans.
Best fit Stores needing broad card, wallet, local-method or buy-now-pay-later coverage, provided those methods are available in the merchant’s region. Stores whose audience expects PayPal checkout or prefers keeping a PayPal balance/account as the payment source.

Fees: why there is no blanket winner

A reliable Stripe-versus-PayPal price verdict requires your country, currency, transaction type, account terms and payment mix. The available WooCommerce guidance explicitly notes that each processor has its own terms and fees, separate from the plugin itself. The supplied material does not provide a complete, current PayPal-versus-Stripe rate matrix for a specific market.

Commerce 0%

Those percentages are WordPress.com platform fees, not Stripe’s processing rates. The same guide gives a US Stripe example of 2.9% plus US$0.30 per payment and directs non-US users to local Stripe pricing. Treat that as the page’s example, not a universal current Stripe rate or a PayPal comparison.

Calculate total cost, not just the headline rate

  • Processor percentage and fixed fee for the seller’s country and currency.
  • Any international, currency-conversion, dispute or payout charges.
  • WordPress.com plan fees or other platform charges.
  • Whether a customer uses a more expensive payment method than a standard card.
  • Subscription retries, refunds and chargeback handling.

Recheck both providers’ current pricing before committing; rates and supported methods change.

Payment methods your customers can actually use

Stripe’s WooCommerce extension documents a wide range of categories: cards, express wallets, regional methods and buy-now-pay-later services. That breadth matters only if the methods are enabled for your business and customers’ locations.

PayPal can be decisive when customers expect a PayPal login, stored balance or PayPal-specific buyer protections. It can also be offered alongside card checkout rather than treated as an either-or decision. Confirm which PayPal products and currencies are available for your account and market.

Subscriptions and recurring payments

For memberships, courses, donations or recurring products, verify the exact renewal flow rather than relying on a gateway’s name. WooCommerce’s subscriptions documentation lists both Stripe and PayPal gateway extensions as supporting automatic recurring payments, but capabilities differ by gateway and payment method.

  • Can the method create a reusable payment token?
  • Are automatic renewals supported in the customer’s country?
  • How are failed payments retried and updated cards handled?
  • Can customers pause, cancel or change the subscription from your chosen WooCommerce workflow?
  • Do express wallets or local methods support recurring billing, or only one-time payments?

Checkout experience, security and customer data

WooCommerce describes three broad gateway patterns: form-based, iframe-based and direct integrations. Form and iframe approaches send payment information to an off-site or embedded processor experience. Direct integrations display payment fields in your checkout and require stronger site-security controls, including SSL, and may involve PCI compliance obligations.

Do not assume that every Stripe or PayPal integration uses one architecture. The checkout behavior depends on the specific extension, settings and payment method. Compare whether customers are redirected, whether wallets appear in the checkout, and what branding or account creation is required.

Gateway choice also determines what customer information is passed to a processor. Review each provider’s privacy terms, data-processing responsibilities and trust record, then document the processor in your privacy notice where required.

Which option fits common WordPress scenarios?

You run a full WooCommerce store

Start with the official Stripe and PayPal gateway documentation for your country. Stripe is a strong candidate when its available cards, wallets, local methods or buy-now-pay-later options match your audience. Add or retain PayPal when a meaningful share of customers expects PayPal checkout. Compare total fees and renewal behavior using your actual order mix.

You sell a few items, services or accept donations on WordPress.com

The PayPal Payment Buttons block may be sufficient if your eligible plan and customers’ preferred payment flow fit a simple button. It is not a substitute for cart, tax, shipping and broader store management.

You need recurring payments on WordPress.com

Evaluate the Stripe-backed Payments block because WordPress.com documents one-time and recurring payments there. Include the plan-based platform fee and Stripe processing charge in your calculation.

You sell internationally

List the countries you serve, then verify merchant eligibility, supported currencies, settlement rules and locally preferred methods for each gateway. A method shown in general documentation may not be enabled for your account or a particular customer.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Confirm whether the site is WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress with WooCommerce.
  2. For WordPress.com, verify the plan required for the PayPal button or Payments block.
  3. Write down your seller country, currencies, average order value and transaction types.
  4. Check current Stripe and PayPal fees for that exact account and payment mix.
  5. List the payment methods your customers request, including PayPal, wallets and local options.
  6. Test subscription creation, renewal, failed-payment recovery and cancellation if you sell recurring products.
  7. Inspect the checkout flow on mobile and desktop, including redirects, express buttons and branding.
  8. Review SSL, PCI scope, privacy disclosures and the customer data sent to each processor.
  9. Run a small live or sandbox test before switching every customer to the new gateway.

Verdict

For WooCommerce, choose the gateway that best matches your region’s fees, customers’ preferred methods, recurring-payment requirements and acceptable checkout architecture. Stripe’s documented method breadth makes it a strong starting point, while PayPal is important when customers specifically want PayPal checkout. For WordPress.com, compare the eligible PayPal button with the Stripe-backed Payments block and include WordPress.com’s plan fee in the total. There is no evidence-based universal price winner without your market and transaction details.
