Why Smartphone Prices Change: What Drives Flagship Phone Costs

Flagship phone prices reflect component costs and supply, but manufacturers also make choices about specifications, pricing and positioning. Here’s how those forces interact.

Flagship phone prices reflect more than the parts inside a device. Component costs and supply matter, but manufacturers also weigh product choices, market conditions, demand and brand positioning. A bill of materials (BOM)—the cost of a phone’s physical components—is not a complete breakdown of the retail price, and there is no universal formula for turning it into the price on a store shelf.

What makes a flagship phone cost more?

A smartphone’s BOM covers physical components such as memory, the system-on-chip (SoC), display panels, camera modules, sensors and radio-frequency modules. It does not, by itself, explain the full retail price. The evidence available does not establish a universal percentage breakdown of a flagship’s sticker price among components, research and development, software, distribution, taxes and profit.

The price customers see is the result of manufacturers’ decisions about costs, supply, product configuration, competitive position and demand. Those factors can change at different rates, so a higher component cost does not automatically mean a phone’s retail price will rise by the same amount.

Why memory and component supply matter

Memory has become a significant cost pressure, but market figures need to be read in context. Counterpoint Research reported that smartphone memory prices rose by more than 80% quarter over quarter in Q2 2026. That is a change in memory prices, not an across-the-board increase in smartphone prices. Counterpoint Research’s Q2 2026 memory-price analysis describes the component market.

Memory’s effect on BOM can also differ by phone segment. Omdia reported that from 3Q25 to 1Q26, memory’s share of BOM nearly doubled in phones below $400 and increased by more than 100% in products above $400. In 1Q26, it accounted for nearly 60% of BOM in smartphones below $400 and more than 64% in phones below $99. Those last two figures concern lower-priced segments; they should not be treated as the memory share of a flagship’s cost. Omdia’s component-cost analysis gives the segment-specific figures.

Availability matters as well as quoted prices. Qualcomm’s quarterly SEC filing says memory constraints and associated price increases may affect demand from handset customers. It also identifies trade-policy changes as a potential source of changes in demand, pricing and costs. These are disclosed business risks, not a specific forecast of what consumers will pay for a particular phone. Qualcomm’s quarterly filing sets out those risk factors.

How manufacturers can respond to higher costs

When a component becomes more expensive or harder to source, a manufacturer has several options: adjust the retail price, absorb some of the added cost, change the configuration, or combine those approaches. A cost increase in one area can also prompt savings elsewhere in the device.

Change the display, camera or processor configuration

Omdia has described possible cost-management choices such as using LTPS OLED rather than LTPO in some models, fitting smaller camera sensors or fewer cameras, and using a previous-generation SoC platform. The trade-off is that these changes can affect capability as well as cost. Omdia reported that LTPS OLED could save vendors around $3 to $5 per device compared with LTPO in some models, and that using previous-generation platforms could potentially reduce SoC costs by 30% to 40%. These are reported examples, not universal savings or proof that any particular flagship uses those choices. Omdia’s analysis discusses the examples.

A specification difference is not evidence of a cost-cutting decision on its own. Confirm any claimed trade-off against manufacturer specifications or reliable reporting about that specific model.

Absorb costs or pass them on

A maker may absorb some cost pressure rather than raise a phone’s listed price, or it may pass some of it on to buyers. The outcome depends on the product, market and company’s commercial choices. Omdia’s March 2026 outlook discussed stronger pricing flexibility and brand positioning in the premium tier than in more price-sensitive lower tiers, as well as the potential advantages of supply relationships and vertical integration. Those are market-level explanations, not proof that a particular brand will absorb or pass through a specific increase. Omdia’s March 2026 outlook sets out that analysis.

Why phone-price headlines do not predict every flagship’s price

Market averages describe a defined group and period, not each model’s price history. Counterpoint Research reported on September 3, 2026, that global retail prices for existing smartphones had risen about 15% on average so far in 2026. It also reported that new smartphone launches were about 25% costlier year over year. These are different market comparisons; neither means every existing phone rose 15% or every new flagship launched 25% higher. Counterpoint Research’s September 2026 pricing analysis describes the scope of those figures.

Forecasts need the same care. Omdia’s March 2026 outlook forecast about 4% growth in devices priced above $800 during 2026 and warned that memory, macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions could affect the outlook. This was a dated forecast, not a finalized result or a prediction for an individual flagship. Omdia’s outlook explains its conditions.

Demand and broader costs can move in different directions across price segments. As Omdia Principal Analyst Zaker Li put it in the March 4, 2026 press release: “Rising memory costs and macro headwinds are expected to impact smartphone demand unevenly across price segments.” The release gives the statement’s context.

How to compare the cost and value of two flagship phones

For a useful comparison, look at specific models in the same market and compare their launch dates and prices over the same period. Then check the parts and capabilities that distinguish them:

  • Memory: Compare capacity and type, rather than assuming all memory configurations have the same cost or performance.
  • Processor: Check the SoC generation and capabilities; a newer platform is not the only factor in the phone’s overall value.
  • Display: Identify the display technology, including whether the model uses LTPS OLED or LTPO when that information is available.
  • Cameras: Compare camera count, sensor size and configuration, not just the number of cameras.
  • Market and retail channel: Prices can differ by market and seller, so compare like with like.
  • Price period: Distinguish a launch price from a later retail price and use the same comparison date for both phones.

A BOM estimate, where one exists for a particular model, can help compare component costs. It still is not the full retail-price waterfall, so it cannot by itself establish whether a phone is overpriced. That judgment requires a defined comparison—such as two models’ features, prices and availability in the same market.
