When Google Home shows a device as offline or its status looks out of date, first check whether the problem affects one device or several. One offline device usually calls for a device power, Wi-Fi, Home-assignment, firmware, or linked-account check; several offline devices make shared power, internet, or service trouble more likely. Work through those possibilities before resetting equipment or buying new networking hardware.
First, determine whether one device or many are affected
Open Google Home and check the status of other devices. If just one appears offline, focus on that device and its connection. If several or all devices are affected, start with issues they share: home power, the internet connection, or a Google service. Google notes that an extended offline period can mean a Nest product has been unable to reconnect to home Wi-Fi. Google’s Nest connection troubleshooting provides separate checks for individual devices and broader outages.

If one device appears offline or outdated
Check power and the device’s connection
- Make sure the device is plugged in, switched on, and showing signs of power.
- Confirm that the device is connected to the Wi-Fi network you expect. Test internet access on a phone or computer connected to that Wi-Fi, with cellular data turned off so it does not mask a home-network problem.
- Check that the device and phone are associated with the same Google Home. Google’s general guidance also recommends checking that manufacturer firmware is current.
Google lists power, Wi-Fi, Home assignment, and firmware among the checks for devices controlled through Google Home. See Google’s “Control smart home devices added to the Google Home app” guidance.

If the device works or has a newer status in its manufacturer’s app but Google Home does not reflect the change, the device may need to sync with Google Home or its linked account may need reconnecting. In Google Home, check the Google Account in use, then look under the Works with Google settings for the linked partner account and its reconnection option. Google also provides a “Sync your devices” action for linked smart-home devices. Google’s linked-device instructions cover syncing and partner-account reconnection.
Consider Wi-Fi coverage if the connection is weak
Distance from the router or Wi-Fi point, wireless frequency, and physical barriers can affect Wi-Fi performance. If the device repeatedly loses connection and is far from the router or separated by walls or floors, try a better placement for the device or Wi-Fi point where practical. Google describes these factors in its Nest Wifi and Google Wifi slow-internet troubleshooting. A mesh system may help when checks point to a coverage problem, but it will not fix a stale linked-account status or an internet or service outage.
If several or all devices appear offline
- Check home power. Verify that the router, Wi-Fi points, and affected devices have power.
- Test the internet connection. On a phone or computer using home Wi-Fi, try loading a webpage with cellular data disabled. If it fails, check for an internet-provider outage.
- Check for a service or app issue. Google recommends checking the Nest service and making sure the relevant app is up to date when all Nest devices are offline. Its connection troubleshooting guide includes these checks.
- Restart network equipment where appropriate. If power and service checks do not resolve the issue, restart the network equipment and then continue with device-specific troubleshooting.
If only some devices remain offline after the shared checks, treat those as individual connection problems rather than assuming the entire home network is at fault.

Reconnect devices after a Wi-Fi change
A changed Wi-Fi name or password, a new router, or a different internet provider can leave Nest or Home devices unable to reconnect to the network they were set up on. Google says these changes may require setting up the affected device again on the new network. Follow the applicable device steps in “How to connect your Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network.” For a mesh setup, also check that the device is within range of a mesh point.

| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| One device is offline | Power, its Wi-Fi connection, Home assignment, and manufacturer firmware. |
| A third-party device changed in its own app, but Google Home is stale | Confirm the Google Account, then sync devices or reconnect the linked partner account. |
| Several or all Nest devices are offline | Home power, internet-provider service, the Nest service, and app updates. |
| The router, Wi-Fi name, password, or provider recently changed | Reconnect or set up affected Nest or Home devices on the new Wi-Fi network. |
| A device repeatedly disconnects in one location | Investigate Wi-Fi distance, placement, frequency, and physical barriers. |
These checks follow Google’s distinct guidance for device status, whole-home connection trouble, Wi-Fi coverage, and new-network setup: smart-home device controls, Nest connection troubleshooting, Wi-Fi performance, and new Wi-Fi networks.
