Raspberry Pi’s guidance is that many workloads fit in 2GB or 8GB, but memory-heavy applications and heavyweight desktop use can benefit from more. Those are broad recommendations, not guaranteed minimums for every setup.
Start with the board, not its RAM
RAM capacity is only one part of a Raspberry Pi configuration. A larger-memory board does not add a missing port or make one generation equivalent to another. Before comparing memory options, check the interfaces and physical form factor your project requires: USB, display output, camera or display connectors, PCIe expansion, networking, and GPIO.

The Raspberry Pi product-series guide shows the distinctions between Pi 4 and Pi 5, including Pi 5’s PCIe connector and dual camera/display connectors. Check the official hardware documentation and product-series information before choosing a board, especially if a particular connector or expansion path is essential.

- Choose Pi 4 or Pi 5 based on the board features and generation your project needs, not on RAM alone.
- Consider the Zero 2 W only when its compact size and more limited interface set suit the project; it is not a like-for-like Pi 4 or Pi 5 substitute.
- Include the cost of compatible power, storage, case, and any necessary cooling when comparing complete setups.
What RAM configurations are available?
Raspberry Pi’s product-series guide lists these configurations. Compare RAM within the board family you have already chosen.

How much RAM do you need?
There is no reliable universal RAM threshold for “a server,” “a desktop,” or any other broad category. Memory use depends on the operating system, applications, data size, concurrent services, and whether a graphical desktop is running. Raspberry Pi says many workloads can fit in 2GB or 8GB, while large language models and computational fluid dynamics can benefit from more memory. It also says heavyweight Ubuntu desktop use benefits from extra capacity compared with Raspberry Pi OS’s low base memory requirements. These are manufacturer guidance, not workload-by-workload tested minimums.

If the project is light or single-purpose
A small, focused project or service may not need a high-memory configuration. Check the software’s requirements and the interfaces first; do not buy extra RAM simply because a larger number is available.
If you will run a desktop or several services
Account for the operating system, graphical applications, and services that run at the same time. A heavyweight Ubuntu desktop may benefit from more memory than Raspberry Pi OS, according to Raspberry Pi, but the appropriate amount depends on what you actually run.

- Build Quality: Solid ABS shell and well made components in one place make it strong and convenient to travel
- Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal
If the workload is memory-intensive
Applications such as large language models and computational fluid dynamics are examples Raspberry Pi identifies as able to benefit from more memory. Estimate from the specific application and data you plan to use rather than assuming every instance needs the largest configuration.
Use real memory usage when you can
If you already have a comparable setup, observe its memory use under representative load: run the same operating system, applications, data, and simultaneous services you expect to use. Leave headroom rather than selecting a configuration that is already close to its limit. This is practical sizing advice, not a Raspberry Pi benchmark or a guarantee that another workload will behave the same way.

Compare current prices carefully
Raspberry Pi announced US manufacturer prices of $67.50 for the 2GB Pi 4 and $77.50 for the 2GB Pi 5, effective 1 October 2026—an increase of $12.50 for each model. The announcement said the 1GB Pi 5 price remained unchanged; Raspberry Pi had cited $45 in its 2 February 2026 announcement. These are manufacturer-announced US prices, not guaranteed local checkout prices. Taxes, country-specific pricing, seller pricing, and stock may differ.
The 2GB price changes are a reminder to compare the actual configurations available where you shop, rather than assuming a higher-RAM option costs only a small amount more. Eben Upton, Raspberry Pi founder, wrote: “we encourage you to make sure the Raspberry Pi products you buy are a good match for your requirements, and that you’re not paying for headroom you don’t need.” See Raspberry Pi’s 1 October 2026 price announcement for the current 2GB figures.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify required connections and form factor. Confirm the board has the USB, display, camera/display, PCIe, networking, and GPIO features your project needs.
- Choose the board generation. Select Pi 4 or Pi 5 based on platform capabilities, not the memory number.
- List the software and workload. Include OS, desktop use, memory-intensive applications, data size, and services running together.
- Select the lowest comfortable RAM option. Use software requirements and, if available, memory usage from a representative setup; leave reasonable headroom.
- Compare total local cost. Check the actual board price and add compatible power, storage, case, and cooling where needed.
