Check the wall switch and whether other devices are affected first; then work through the bulb’s network requirements, signal, recent router changes, and model-specific reset instructions. The cause is not the same for every bulb, so avoid factory-resetting or buying replacement equipment until the checks point to it.
Start with power and the scope of the problem
Make sure the bulb has continuous power
Confirm that the fixture’s wall switch is on and stays on. Some smart bulbs need an always-on supply to remain reachable; switching the fixture off cuts power to the bulb, even if its app still lists it. TP-Link’s support guidance for specified Wi-Fi bulb models includes checking the switch when a bulb is unreachable.

Find out whether one bulb or the whole home is affected
- If several smart devices are offline, or other devices cannot connect to home Wi-Fi, check the router and internet service before resetting a single bulb.
- If only one bulb is affected, focus on its power, placement, network setup, and model-specific support.
This distinction helps prevent treating a broader connection problem as a bulb fault. Google’s Nest Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the network when connected devices have trouble reaching it.

Check how the exact bulb connects
“Smart bulb” does not identify a single wireless protocol or setup. Depending on the model, a bulb may connect directly to Wi-Fi, use a bridge or hub, or rely on another supported smart-home network. Check the bulb’s manual or manufacturer app for the exact network requirements before changing router settings.

Some devices need the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band during setup; that is not a requirement to assume for every bulb. Google’s Seamless Setup troubleshooting page explains relevant setup checks, including 2.4 GHz availability for some devices and access-point or client isolation, which can prevent local device communication. Apply those checks only if they match the bulb’s setup.
Test signal strength and wireless interference
A bulb near the edge of reliable coverage may disconnect intermittently or respond slowly. Distance, walls and other obstacles, nearby electronics, and competing wireless networks can all affect communication. Google’s wireless-interference guidance describes interference as a cause of connection problems and recommends testing placement and reducing interference.

- Where practical, temporarily move the bulb or access point closer together and see whether the connection becomes more stable.
- Consider whether obstacles or nearby electronics may be weakening or disrupting the signal.
- If the router’s channel is set to switch automatically, testing a different channel setting may help identify interference. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- For Kasa devices, TP-Link says to move the device closer when its reported signal is below -70 dBm. This is Kasa-specific support guidance, not a universal smart-bulb threshold. See TP-Link’s Kasa connection guidance.
A range extender or repeater is worth considering only if weak coverage is the identified problem; it will not restore power to a switched-off bulb or fix every router, service, or compatibility issue.

Account for router, Wi-Fi, app, and firmware changes
If the router was replaced, the Wi-Fi name or password changed, or network settings were adjusted, the bulb may still be configured for the old setup. Use the manufacturer’s app and the bulb’s manual to update its connection rather than assuming it will automatically follow the new network. TP-Link’s guidance for Kasa devices also recommends restarting the router and device and checking for available app or firmware updates.

- Confirm the home network is working for other devices.
- Restart the router and bulb according to their manufacturers’ instructions.
- Check for updates to the bulb’s app and firmware.
- If Wi-Fi credentials or settings changed, reconnect the bulb using its model-specific setup process.
Reset only when the model’s instructions call for it
A reset can remove a stuck connection, but reset sequences differ by model and may erase configuration. Consult the exact bulb’s manual before cycling its power or starting setup again.
For example, TP-Link’s Deco guide for the LB100, LB110, and LB120 says three off/on cycles reset the bulb without losing configuration, while five cycles perform a factory reset. A factory reset erases custom settings and requires setup again. Those counts apply to the models covered by that guide; they are not a general smart-bulb procedure. Refer to TP-Link’s bulb support page for the covered product instructions.

When to contact support or replace something
If one bulb remains unreachable after you have confirmed continuous power, checked its network and signal, updated the app or firmware, and followed the correct model-specific reset process, contact the manufacturer with the exact model and the steps already tried. Consider replacing the bulb only if the remaining evidence points to a fault in that bulb. Likewise, buy a coverage accessory only when testing indicates that weak coverage is the problem.
