Does Undervolting a GPU Reduce Electricity Use and Heat?

Undervolting can make a GPU more efficient, but it does not guarantee lower electricity use or temperatures. Compare power, performance, and stability under the same workload.

Yes, it can—but the result depends on the GPU’s workload and boost behavior. If the card runs at a similar clock and performance level with less voltage, it can draw less power and produce less heat. If it uses the extra headroom to boost higher, power may fall only slightly or stay similar while performance improves.

What undervolting changes

A GPU’s power use depends partly on its voltage and clock speed. Reducing voltage can improve efficiency, but it does not guarantee a fixed reduction in watts: the card’s power management may change clocks and performance in response to the workload and available power headroom. NVIDIA describes power management as adjusting performance state within a power envelope, including reducing clocks when power use is too high (NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation).

Keep undervolting distinct from lowering a power limit. A power limit sets a ceiling on power draw; undervolting changes the voltage used at a given operating point. Both can affect power and performance, but they are different controls.

When it can reduce heat and electricity use

If the GPU completes the same workload at roughly the same performance with lower board power, the cooling system has less heat to dissipate. That can reduce GPU temperature, fan activity, or both, but the temperature change depends on the cooler, case airflow, fan curve, room temperature, workload duration, and clock behavior. A lower temperature is not guaranteed simply because an undervolt was applied.

  • This cooling fan's total size is 11in(L) x 4.72in(W) x 1.18in(H), designed for most universal graphic card video card VGA cooling, just please check the size to make sure your pc has enough space
  • D-type interface cable included four interfaces, three voltages: 5V, 7V and 12V; different voltages with different airflow, speed and noise. You can select the appropriate voltage interface to start the fan

  • packing list: 3 x 92mm fans (PCI bracket screwed), 1 x multi-voltage cable ,1 x mini screwdriver,1 x fixing screw

Electricity use over time depends on average power, not just a brief peak. Sustained power multiplied by operating time gives energy in watt-hours. The effect on a household bill also depends on how long the GPU runs and the local electricity rate; there is no universal bill-saving percentage.

Why one study’s efficiency result is not a typical savings estimate

Price, Barsdell, Greenhill, Clark, and Babich reported that GPU power consumption varies nonlinearly with temperature and supply voltage. In a 2014 experiment, they found up to 37–48% higher power efficiency—performance per watt—for an NVIDIA K20 running xGPU, a compute-bound radio-astronomy workload, under their tuned operating strategy (Price et al., 2014 study).

SCCCF Dual 92mm Graphic Card Fans, Graphics Card Cooler, Video Card VGA Cooler, PCI Slot Fan GPU Cooler
  • 2 x 92mm fans combined into one interface, can be connected to the motherboard's 3-pin or 4-pin interface and you only need to access one interface to run all the fans
  • This cooling fan's total size is 7.36in(L) x 4.72in(W) x 1.18in(H), designed for most universal graphic card video card VGA cooling, just please check the size to make sure your pc has enough space
  • D-type interface cable included four interfaces, three voltages: 5V, 7V and 12V; different voltages with different airflow, speed and noise. You can select the appropriate voltage interface to start the fan

  • packing list: 2 x 92mm fans (PCI bracket screwed), 1 x multi-voltage cable ,1 x mini screwdriver,1 x fixing screw

That result is specific to the K20, xGPU, and the study’s conditions. It is not a prediction for a modern gaming card, a 37–48% reduction in power draw, or a household electricity-bill saving. The study also does not establish a safe undervolt voltage or universal tuning procedure for other GPUs.

How to check whether your own undervolt helps

Compare stock settings and the undervolt using the same game, benchmark, or compute workload. Keep other settings consistent and assess power, temperature, performance, and stability together. With NVIDIA hardware, nvidia-smi can report board-power and temperature information where supported; telemetry availability varies by device (NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation).

  1. Record a stock baseline. Run a repeatable workload long enough to reach a steady state. Note board power in watts, GPU temperature, clock speed, and a performance measure such as frame rate or benchmark score.
  2. Apply the undervolt using a method appropriate to your GPU. The sources cited here do not provide model-specific tuning instructions or a voltage certified as safe, so use guidance for your exact card rather than copying another model’s settings.
  3. Repeat the same workload and measurements. Keep the performance target and other settings comparable; otherwise a change in workload or clock behavior can make the comparison misleading.
  4. Check reliability. Look for crashes, visual artifacts, or errors during the workloads you actually use. A short successful run does not establish stability in every game or compute task.

Interpret the readings together. Lower watts with similar performance supports a real efficiency gain. Lower watts alongside meaningfully lower performance may simply mean the GPU is doing less work. Similar watts with higher performance may still be an efficiency improvement, even though electricity use during that test did not fall.

What the available evidence cannot establish

  • A safe voltage for an unspecified GPU or a universal undervolting method.
  • A typical power reduction or temperature drop across consumer graphics cards.
  • Whole-system electricity savings or a bill reduction without measurements of usage time and local rates.
  • Results that apply across GPU brands: the cited empirical study concerns an NVIDIA K20, and the NVIDIA telemetry and power-management documentation applies to NVIDIA devices or specified platforms.
