Why Six-Week Forecasts Change: How Ensemble Weather Models Work

Six-week forecasts are probability guidance, not daily timetables. Here is how ensemble members, spread, model updates and climatological baselines explain changing outlooks.

Six-week forecasts change because the atmosphere is chaotic, observations are imperfect, and every new forecast starts with a revised estimate of current conditions. At that range, a forecast is not a timetable of daily rain and temperatures. It is probabilistic guidance about broad weekly patterns—such as a higher chance of warmer, cooler, wetter or drier conditions—generated by many plausible model runs.

What a six-week forecast is actually predicting

A six-week product sits between a conventional weather forecast and a climate outlook. In the first several days, numerical models can often resolve individual weather systems, fronts and temperature swings. By six weeks, tiny differences in the atmosphere’s starting state have had time to grow, so the useful signal is usually a weekly anomaly rather than a specific day’s weather.

Sub-seasonal systems therefore commonly divide the future into seven-day periods and report probabilities for categories such as above-normal, near-normal or below-normal temperature and precipitation. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) describes its medium-range ensemble as providing detailed information to about 15 days; its Forecast User Guide treats sub-seasonal guidance as a separate product that gives probabilistic indications beyond six weeks. A map showing a warm week six weeks from now should be read as a tilt in the odds for that week, not as a promise that every afternoon will be hot.

Why a new forecast run can move the answer

Observations never describe the atmosphere perfectly

Forecasting begins by constructing an analyzed atmosphere from weather stations, aircraft, satellites, radar, ocean measurements and other observations. Those measurements contain gaps, noise and timing differences. The analysis is an estimate, not a complete three-dimensional inventory of every air parcel, cloud and ocean current.

ECMWF identifies uncertainty in the initial conditions as one of two fundamental reasons forecast skill declines with lead time. A new cycle ingests newer observations and can adjust the analysis of pressure, humidity, winds, soil moisture or ocean conditions. Even a small adjustment can send the model toward a different later evolution.

The equations require approximations

Numerical models solve equations for a real atmosphere that contains processes at scales too small to calculate directly everywhere. Cloud formation, turbulence, convection, radiation and exchanges with land and sea must be represented with approximations. ECMWF identifies those model-construction approximations as the second major source of growing error.

As lead time increases, errors from both the starting analysis and the model representation amplify. A run issued this morning is not “changing its mind” about a fixed future; it is calculating a future from a revised present with slightly different assumptions.

Chaotic growth makes small differences visible

The atmosphere is nonlinear. Two states that look nearly identical on a weather map can develop different jet-stream waves, storm tracks or blocking patterns days later. Once those large-scale features diverge, local forecasts can diverge even more. This is why a six-week chart may change substantially while the broad climate regime remains similar.

How an ensemble turns uncertainty into information

Many plausible forecasts, not many votes

An ensemble runs the forecasting system repeatedly with deliberately varied starting conditions and, in many systems, varied model physics. The members are samples of plausible atmospheric evolutions. They are not independent opinions and they do not make an inherently predictable event predictable merely by repetition.

ECMWF’s current medium-range ENS has 51 members: one control forecast plus 50 forecasts made with slightly altered initial conditions and slightly altered model physics. The resulting collection is treated as a probability distribution. If most members produce a similar outcome, the distribution is concentrated. If members split into different outcomes, the distribution is broad.

What “spread” means

ECMWF states, “The greater the spread of results across the ensemble, the greater the uncertainty in the forecast.” Spread is therefore a confidence cue. A tight cluster of member forecasts indicates agreement within that ensemble; a wide cluster indicates disagreement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spread is not an error bar that guarantees the observed atmosphere will fall inside it. An ensemble can be too narrow, miss an important source of uncertainty or have a systematic bias. Probabilities become more useful when they are calibrated against many past forecasts and observations, rather than read as a literal guarantee for one case.

From members to probabilities

Suppose 33 of 51 members place a weekly temperature in the above-normal category. A product might display an approximately 65% probability for that category, depending on its calibration and processing. That is a meaningful tilt, but it still leaves substantial probability on near-normal or below-normal outcomes. A 55% category probability is a modest edge, not certainty.

Why six weeks is a different forecasting horizon

Short and medium range: details can matter

At short lead times, forecasters can discuss the timing of a cold front, the likely path of a storm or the hour when rain begins, subject to normal uncertainty. ECMWF’s cited medium-range documentation places detailed information out to about 15 days, while emphasizing that the output is probabilistic.

Sub-seasonal range: patterns replace timetables

Beyond that detailed horizon, useful information often comes from slower or larger-scale influences: persistent ocean-temperature patterns, soil moisture, snow cover, tropical convection and recurring circulation regimes. These influences can shift the odds for a weekly average without determining every individual day.

A six-week product should consequently answer questions such as “Is week five more likely than usual to be warmer?” or “Is there an elevated chance of a wetter weekly pattern?” It generally cannot answer “Will it rain at 3 p.m. on the Tuesday five weeks from now?” with dependable precision.

How to read a changing six-week chart

  1. Identify the lead time and period. Confirm whether the graphic covers a seven-day mean, a calendar week, a rolling period or a daily sequence. A broad weekly anomaly is a different object from a daily deterministic forecast.
  2. Find the probability scale. Read the numerical probabilities and category definitions, not only the color. A 55% warm category means a modestly favored outcome under that product’s calibration.
  3. Inspect ensemble spread or probability shading. A concentrated distribution supports more confidence than a distribution split among competing regimes. If a site shows only one line or one colored map, it may be hiding the underlying uncertainty.
  4. Check whether the signal persists across runs. A feature that appears in several successive initialization cycles is generally more useful than a one-run spike. Persistence is an interpretation of ensemble practice, not a guarantee that the signal will verify.
  5. Compare with the baseline. Ask whether the forecast beats a climatological distribution or a persistence forecast for the same location, variable and season. ECMWF defines a skill horizon as the lead time when an ensemble ceases to outperform a climatological distribution.
  6. Use the forecast at the scale it supports. Use six-week guidance for planning ranges, staffing, energy demand, agriculture or travel flexibility. Switch to medium- and short-range forecasts for exact event timing as the date approaches.

What disagreement between weather apps means

Two services can disagree without one having a simple software error. They may initialize from different observation analyses, use different model equations, run different ensemble sizes, apply different bias corrections or define “normal” with different climatological periods. They may also update at different times, so one display can be based on a newer cycle.

Differences in presentation matter as well. One provider may show the single control member, another a calibrated ensemble probability, and another a blended product combining several models. A deterministic map can look decisive even when the underlying members are widely separated.

Comparison question Why it matters
What range and update schedule are used? A six-week weekly outlook and a 45-day daily-looking chart are not equivalent; newer initialization cycles can shift the result.
How many ensemble members are run? Member count affects sampling of plausible outcomes. ECMWF’s medium-range ENS uses 51 members, including one control and 50 perturbed members.
What is perturbed? Some systems vary initial conditions, model physics, or both. The perturbation design determines which uncertainties are represented.
Are probabilities calibrated? Calibration adjusts raw member frequencies using historical performance, making a displayed 60% more meaningful than an unprocessed count.
What baseline and verification metric are used? Skill should be measured against climatology or persistence and reported for a particular variable, region, season and metric.
Which variables and regions are covered? Temperature, precipitation, wind and soil moisture have different predictability. A product can perform differently by location and season.
Is the product designed for hazards or broad anomalies? A hazard-focused system may estimate event risk, while a climate-style outlook may only indicate a weekly departure from normal.

How much trust should a six-week forecast receive?

There is no universal “six-week accuracy” percentage. Skill depends on the variable, location, season, ensemble system, forecast horizon and verification metric. A temperature anomaly over a large region may be more predictable than a local rainfall total. A weekly average may verify reasonably while the day-to-day sequence within that week does not.

ECMWF’s September 2026 evaluation reports that IFS Cycle 50r1, implemented in May 2026, improved forecast skill. It says ECMWF retained an overall lead for medium-range upper-air variables and that sub-seasonal IFS skill above persistence is increasing, while gaps remain for some surface variables and regions. Those are evaluation results across defined scores, not a promise for every six-week forecast at every location.

The practical standard is comparative skill: does the product outperform a suitable climatological or persistence baseline over a sufficiently large historical sample? A product that is skillful on average can still miss an individual week, and a weak signal can occasionally be correct by chance.

Common mistakes and better alternatives

Treating a colored map as a daily schedule

Why it fails: six-week guidance summarizes probabilities over a period, while daily weather is controlled by smaller-scale systems that are not predictable that far ahead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Better approach: read the map as a category probability for the stated week, then wait for shorter-range guidance before making decisions tied to a particular day.

Assuming the newest run is automatically right

Why it fails: newer observations improve the initial analysis but do not remove chaotic growth or model error.

Better approach: compare successive runs, ensemble spread and calibrated probabilities. A stable, moderate signal is more informative than a dramatic one-time change.

Confusing member agreement with certainty

Why it fails: an ensemble can be under-dispersed or omit a relevant uncertainty source. Agreement inside the model is evidence, not proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Better approach: ask how the ensemble was calibrated and whether historical verification shows reliable probabilities.

Comparing products without matching their baselines

Why it fails: “warmer than normal” depends on the reference climatology. Different periods or regions can produce different categories for the same physical conditions.

Better approach: match the forecast period, climatological baseline, variable, geography and verification method before comparing scores.

A decision framework for using six-week guidance

Use it for range planning

Six-week probabilities can support decisions that tolerate uncertainty: preparing alternative staffing levels, considering energy-demand ranges, scheduling maintenance with flexibility or identifying weeks that merit closer monitoring. Record the probability and the issue date so a later decision-maker knows what information was available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escalate only when the signal is meaningful

Set a threshold appropriate to the consequence of being wrong. A small probability tilt may justify monitoring but not an expensive intervention. A stronger, persistent signal combined with a known vulnerability can justify contingency planning, especially when independent observations and shorter-range forecasts later agree.

Replace broad guidance with event forecasts

As the target week approaches, move to products designed for the relevant lead time. Use the six-week outlook to frame possibilities, not to supply exact rain times, wind gusts or daily maximum temperatures.

What ensemble forecasts can—and cannot—tell you

  • They can: quantify uncertainty, show competing plausible regimes, estimate probabilities for broad events and indicate whether a signal is stronger than normal variability.
  • They cannot: guarantee that the observation will lie inside the plotted spread, remove model bias, provide a dependable six-week timetable of local daily weather or produce one accuracy number that applies everywhere.
  • They should be judged by: calibrated probabilities, historical verification, comparison with climatology or persistence, and the variable and geography relevant to your decision.

The Met Office summarizes the purpose plainly: “Ensemble forecasts quantify uncertainties in weather prediction and estimate risks of particular weather events.” That is the right mental model for a changing six-week chart. The changing runs are not a defect to hide; they reveal how much the plausible futures depend on uncertain starting conditions and model assumptions.

Bottom line

A six-week forecast changes because each update rebuilds the atmosphere’s starting state and explores nonlinear model trajectories. Read the ensemble’s probabilities and spread, expect weekly anomaly guidance rather than exact daily weather, and judge trustworthiness against climatology or persistence for the specific variable and region. When the signal is weak or the members are widely dispersed, uncertainty—not a hidden precise answer—is the forecast.
