How to Play Big Walk on a TV Without an Xbox

Big Walk does not require an Xbox. Connect a Windows PC or Mac by HDMI, stream with Steam Link, or use the native PS5 and Switch 2 versions.

You do not need an Xbox to play Big Walk on a television. The game’s current official platforms are Windows and Mac (through Steam and the Mac App Store), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox is not on that list, and the official FAQ says no other platforms are planned at this time.

The practical choices are to connect a Windows PC or Mac to the TV with HDMI, stream the computer to a compatible TV device with Steam Link, or play the native PS5 or Switch 2 version. The game supports full controller input, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer, with an officially published player range of two to 12.

Which platforms support Big Walk?

Big Walk is not an Xbox console game. The current official platform list is:

  • Windows via Steam
  • Mac via Steam or the Mac App Store
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch 2

That means an Xbox Series X, Series S, or Xbox One cannot be used as the console running the game. An Xbox-branded controller is a different matter: it is supported input hardware, not a requirement for an Xbox console.

Because the platform list can change after launch, check the game’s current official FAQ or store listing if you are making a purchase well after 2026. The FAQ currently states that no other platforms are planned.

The three ways to play on a TV

Route Where the game runs TV connection Extra hardware Best for
PC or Mac directly connected Windows PC or Mac HDMI from the computer to the TV Correct HDMI cable or video adapter; controller optional Lowest-complexity setup when the computer can sit near the television
Steam Link or Steam Remote Play Windows PC or Mac elsewhere in the home Local network stream to a compatible TV device or app Compatible Steam Link device or TV app; controller Using a computer that is not beside the TV
PlayStation 5 PS5 Normal console HDMI connection PS5, HDMI connection, controller Players who already own a PS5
Nintendo Switch 2 Switch 2 Docked TV mode over HDMI Switch 2 dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable Players who want a portable console that also works on the TV

There is no universal performance or latency guarantee for streamed play, so a direct HDMI connection is the more predictable option when it is practical. Streaming quality depends on the host computer, the TV device, and the home network.

Option 1: Connect a Windows PC or Mac directly to the TV

Direct HDMI play is usually the simplest computer setup. The computer renders Big Walk, while the television acts as the display. You can then sit on the sofa and use a controller instead of a keyboard and mouse.

What you need

  • A Windows PC or Mac that meets the game’s current store requirements.
  • A purchase of Big Walk on Steam, or the Mac App Store version when using a Mac.
  • An available HDMI input on the television.
  • An HDMI cable, or a video adapter that matches the computer’s output.
  • A compatible controller if you do not want to play with keyboard and mouse.

Do not assume that every USB-C port carries video. Check the computer’s specification for DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or another supported video-output standard before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. Match the adapter to the computer and the cable to the adapter or output, then connect to an available HDMI input on the TV.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Install Big Walk through Steam on Windows or Mac, or install the Mac App Store edition on a Mac.
  2. Connect the computer’s video output to the television’s HDMI input.
  3. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the computer. If the desktop does not appear, try another input or verify the computer’s display settings.
  4. Connect your controller to the computer by USB or Bluetooth, following the controller manufacturer’s pairing procedure.
  5. Open Steam and start Big Picture mode. Steam describes Big Picture as an interface designed for a TV and game controller, so menus are easier to operate from the sofa.
  6. Launch Big Walk, confirm that the game recognizes the controller, and adjust the TV and game display settings for your seating distance.

The Steam listing identifies full controller support and support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers. You therefore do not need an Xbox console or an Xbox controller specifically; a supported PlayStation, Nintendo, or other compatible controller can be used if your computer and Steam recognize it.

When direct HDMI is the better choice

  • The computer can be placed close enough to the TV for a reliable cable run.
  • You want to avoid network-streaming variables.
  • You need the clearest troubleshooting path: the game runs locally, and only the display and controller connections need checking.
  • You have a laptop and can move it temporarily for a group session.

Option 2: Stream from a computer with Steam Link

Steam Link and Steam Remote Play let the computer run Big Walk while a compatible TV device displays the video and audio. Controller input travels back to the host computer. The TV is not running the game itself; the Windows PC or Mac remains the host.

Requirements and limitations

  • A Windows PC or Mac with Big Walk installed and Steam running.
  • A compatible Steam Link device or a TV platform that supports the Steam Link app.
  • A controller paired with the TV device or Steam Link hardware.
  • A stable home network connecting the TV device and host computer.

Compatibility is device-specific. Not every smart-TV model supports the Steam Link app, so check the exact TV model or streaming device before buying hardware. The host computer must be powered on, signed in to Steam, and able to launch the game when you start a Remote Play session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step Steam Link setup

  1. Install Steam Link on a supported TV device, or connect compatible Steam Link hardware to an HDMI input.
  2. On the Windows PC or Mac, install Big Walk, open Steam, and leave the computer available as the Remote Play host.
  3. Connect the TV device and the computer to the same usable home network. A wired connection for the host or TV device can help where Wi-Fi is congested, but the official materials do not promise a particular speed or latency.
  4. Open Steam Link on the TV device and follow its pairing instructions to find the computer running Steam.
  5. Pair your controller with the Steam Link device or TV app. If the controller is paired directly to the computer instead, verify that its signal reaches the host from your seating position.
  6. Select the computer in Steam Link, open your Steam library, and launch Big Walk.
  7. If the picture or controls are unstable, first check the host computer’s Steam status, the network connection, and the TV device’s compatibility before changing game settings.

Remote Play is useful when the computer is in an office or another room, but it introduces more possible failure points than a direct HDMI cable: the host must stay available, both devices must communicate across the network, and the TV device must support the app.

Option 3: Play the native PlayStation 5 version

The official press materials list PlayStation 5 as a native Big Walk platform. If you own a PS5, connect it to the television normally with HDMI, install or purchase the PS5 edition, and use the console’s controller.

Basic PS5 setup

  1. Connect the PS5 to an HDMI input on the TV and connect the console to power.
  2. Select that HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Install the PS5 version of Big Walk and start it from the console dashboard.
  4. Pair the controller with the PS5 and confirm that the game responds before inviting other players.

PlayStation also documents Remote Play to compatible devices over a broadband network. That can be useful when the PS5 is not beside the screen, but it is a separate streaming arrangement from playing directly on the console. The PS5 still runs the game.

Option 4: Play in Switch 2 TV mode

The official press kit lists Nintendo Switch 2 as a native platform. To use the console on a television, Nintendo’s docked-mode instructions require the Switch 2 dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch 2 docked setup

  1. Connect the Switch 2 AC adapter to the dock and to a power outlet.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television.
  3. Place the Switch 2 console in the dock.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input connected to the dock.
  5. Start Big Walk on the Switch 2 and connect the controllers you plan to use.

Nintendo describes docked mode as playing Switch games on a bigger screen. Make sure the dock, power adapter, and HDMI cable are present; the handheld console alone is not the complete TV setup.

Controllers, cables, and seating distance

Controller choice

Big Walk has full controller support on its Steam listing, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Big Picture also supports Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo controller input. Choose the controller that your platform already supports rather than buying an Xbox console just to obtain a controller.

A controller is optional on a directly connected computer if keyboard and mouse are comfortable from your seat. For TV play, however, a wireless controller normally avoids running a long USB cable across the room. Pair it with the computer, console, or Steam Link device according to that platform’s instructions.

Choosing the cable or adapter

  • For a PS5 or Switch 2 dock, use the console’s standard HDMI connection and an HDMI input on the TV.
  • For a desktop PC, identify the graphics card’s output—often HDMI or DisplayPort—and use the matching cable or a compatible DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.
  • For a Mac or laptop, check whether its USB-C, Thunderbolt, HDMI, or Mini DisplayPort connector supports video before purchasing an adapter.
  • Use a cable long enough to route safely without creating a trip hazard, especially around a sofa.

Display and seating considerations

Put the TV in a picture mode that does not add unnecessary processing if you notice sluggish controls, and place the controller where its wireless signal is not blocked by furniture or the computer. These are practical setup choices rather than guarantees of a particular response time; the official materials do not publish a universal latency figure.

Multiplayer: what the TV setup does—and does not—change

The official press kit gives Big Walk a player range of “2–12,” and the Steam listing identifies online co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, and full controller support. A television connection does not turn the game into local couch co-op. Other players should plan to join online from their own supported platform.

Best Value
Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Cross-platform play is described in the official materials, but they do not promise that every platform combination or account configuration will behave identically in every region. Before scheduling a large session, have each player install the correct edition, sign in to the required platform account, and verify that invitations or matchmaking work for the group.

Planning a group session

  • Confirm that every participant is using Windows, Mac, PS5, or Switch 2.
  • Decide which player will host or send the invitations according to the game’s in-game flow.
  • Use a headset or the platform’s voice-chat tools if players are in different rooms.
  • Do not count on several people sharing one TV as a substitute for online accounts and network connections.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The TV says “No signal” from a computer

  1. Verify that the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the computer.
  2. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  3. Check that the computer output and adapter support video; a USB-C connector does not automatically provide display output.
  4. Try another HDMI input or a known-compatible cable.
  5. Once the desktop appears, open Steam Big Picture before launching the game.

Steam Link cannot find the computer

  1. Confirm that Steam is running and signed in on the Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Check that the TV device and host are on the same usable home network.
  3. Restart Steam Link and Steam, then repeat the pairing process.
  4. Check the exact TV device’s Steam Link compatibility; not every smart-TV model supports the app.

The game opens but the controller does not work

  • Pair the controller with the device that is actually receiving input: the computer for direct HDMI, or the TV device for Steam Link.
  • In Steam, confirm that the controller is detected before starting the game.
  • Try a wired connection temporarily to distinguish pairing problems from game problems.
  • Use Steam Big Picture to review controller configuration.

Remote Play is unstable

  • Keep Steam running on the host computer and prevent it from sleeping.
  • Check the network connection of both host and TV device.
  • Reduce competing traffic on the home network.
  • If the problem continues, move the computer beside the TV and use direct HDMI; this removes the streaming link from the setup.

Big Walk crashes or freezes on PC

Start with the official FAQ’s PC troubleshooting guidance. Confirm that the game is installed on the supported Windows or Mac version, restart Steam, and verify that the computer meets the current store requirements. Do not assume a third-party utility is required unless the official support information specifically directs you to one.

Which route should you choose?

Your situation Recommended route Why
You own a capable Windows PC or Mac and can place it near the TV Direct HDMI The game runs locally and the connection has fewer components to diagnose.
You own a capable computer but it is in another room Steam Link or Remote Play You can leave the host computer where it is and stream to a compatible TV device.
You already own a PS5 Native PS5 version No computer or Steam Link host is needed.
You already own a Switch 2 and its dock Native Switch 2 version in docked mode The console is designed to switch between handheld and TV play.
You own only an Xbox console No supported Xbox route currently Xbox is not in the official platform list; you would need a Windows or Mac computer, PS5, or Switch 2.

For most people who already have a suitable computer, direct HDMI is the most dependable starting point. Steam Link is the convenient alternative when cable placement is the real obstacle. PS5 and Switch 2 are the straightforward choices when one of those consoles is already part of your setup.
