Shortening an Unreal workspace can get a build moving, but it does not prove the path was the root cause. Windows long-path support depends on both system configuration and application opt-in, while Unreal Game Sync (UGS) has its own documented 260-character check. The right fix depends on which process and build stage reports the first error.
Why does an Unreal build fail with a path that is too long?
“Path too long” can describe different limits in different parts of the build chain: UGS syncing files, Windows file APIs, Unreal Build Tool (UBT), or a compiler, linker, or packaging tool. A shorter workspace root reduces the prefix, but a generated intermediate directory or long filename may still push the complete path over a limit. A build can also pass one stage and then fail later in a different tool.

Microsoft documents MAX_PATH as 260 characters for many Windows API cases, with the terminating null character counted in that limit. The rule is not universal: Windows 10 version 1607 and later removed this restriction from many common Win32 file and directory functions only when long-path behavior is enabled and the application opts in through a longPathAware manifest. Microsoft’s documentation makes the distinction explicit: “Starting in Windows 10, version 1607, MAX_PATH limitations have been removed from many common Win32 file and directory functions. However, your app must opt-in to the new behavior.” Microsoft Learn: Maximum Path Length Limitation.
That opt-in requirement is why changing a Windows setting alone may not help. The process that encounters the path must also support the behavior. Nor does support in one program prove that every application involved in an Unreal workflow can handle the same path.

What is specific to Unreal Game Sync?
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 Unreal Game Sync troubleshooting guidance says UGS may block syncing when it detects a path longer than 260 characters. Epic also says, “There is currently no way to disable this check in UGS.” This is a UGS-specific check, not a claim that every Unreal build route fails at that length. Windows long-path opt-in does not override an explicit application-side check. Epic: Unreal Game Sync Troubleshooting.
For this UGS case, Epic recommends moving the workspace closer to the drive root—for example, D:/prj/workspace/—and shortening filenames. These changes reduce path length directly. Epic also documents a less common case involving a .uprojectdirs file: selecting a .uproject file in UGS can work around it.

How to find the failing layer
- Capture the first error. Record the executable or tool named in it, the stage (sync, project generation, compilation, linking, or packaging), the full failing path, Unreal and Windows versions, and whether the workflow uses UGS or Perforce. The final “build failed” summary may not identify the component that rejected the path.
- Measure the complete path. Include the drive, workspace root, engine and project folders, generated intermediate directories, and filename. A short project folder by itself does not establish that the path seen by the failing process is short.
- Match the fix to the process. If UGS blocks syncing, use Epic’s shorter-workspace and shorter-filename recommendations; if the project was selected through
.uprojectdirs, try the documented.uprojectselection workaround. If another Windows process fails, check both the Windows long-path policy or registry value and whether that application opts in with alongPathAwaremanifest. - Change one thing, then rerun the same stage. Compare the first error and full path before and after. If the failure moves to a later stage, investigate that stage’s process rather than assuming the original change solved every path constraint.
Processes that were already running when a Windows long-path value changed may need to be restarted. A successful file operation through one API is not proof that the Windows shell or every desktop tool can use the same path.
Which path remedy fits which failure?
| Remedy | What it changes | Best fit and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Move the workspace closer to the drive root and shorten names | Shortens the actual path prefix for the local workspace. | Epic’s documented UGS mitigation; it does not establish that all tools in the build chain support long paths. |
| Enable Windows long-path behavior and use a long-path-aware application | Allows eligible, opted-in applications to use extended paths for supported Windows APIs. | Relevant when a Windows process using those APIs fails; does not disable UGS’s own documented length check. |
Select the .uproject in UGS instead of relying on .uprojectdirs |
Changes how UGS selects the project. | Epic documents this as a workaround for a rare UGS case involving .uprojectdirs, not as a general path-length remedy. |
| Review UBT path configuration | Sets recommended root or nested path values described in UBT configuration. | Useful for understanding UBT’s portability guidance; Epic does not say these values override every operating-system or tool limit. |
Does enabling Windows long paths fix Unreal Engine builds?
Not necessarily. It can help only when the failing process uses Windows APIs that support long paths and that application has opted in. It will not remove UGS’s separately documented 260-character sync check. If the first error names a compiler, linker, or other tool, verify that particular tool’s behavior rather than inferring it from the Windows setting.

Microsoft describes extended-length paths of approximately 32,767 characters when using the \? prefix, subject to runtime expansion and component-length limits. Relative paths remain limited to MAX_PATH. Those details describe Windows path handling, not a guarantee that Unreal, the shell, or every build utility can accept a path of that length. Microsoft’s path-length documentation explains the conditions.
What UBT’s path settings do—and do not—tell you
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 build configuration documentation describes MaxRootPathLength as a maximum recommended root path length and MaxNestedPathLength as a Windows setting intended to keep paths portable. These are configuration guidance, not a universal override for OS or tool limits. Use them as a clue when reviewing project configuration, but diagnose the process named by the first actual error. Why a shorter path can look like the fix
Moving a workspace closer to the root reduces every descendant path, so it can resolve an actual length threshold in UGS or another tool. But if the build then proceeds farther and fails in another stage, that is evidence that the first constraint was avoided—not proof that the entire build chain now handles long paths. Without the failing log, full path, Unreal and Windows versions, and stage, it is not possible to identify a single “real fix” for a particular build.
