The discomfort can reflect expectations you learned about saying yes, or the strain of changing a familiar response. A useful boundary is not a verdict on someone else: it is a clear account of what you can offer while respecting your own time, energy, and capacity.
Why can setting boundaries feel selfish?
People may be socialized to accept responsibilities and activities even when they are uncomfortable doing so. Sunita Sah, an organizational psychologist, describes pausing as a way to interrupt that automatic compliance. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that setting limits can bring temporary emotional discomfort; that explanation is expert commentary, not a diagnosis of why any one person feels guilty. APA’s 2025 feature on boundaries in clinical practice discusses these dynamics among clinicians.

Guilt about taking time for yourself is also reported beyond clinical settings, but it is not the same measure as guilt after setting an interpersonal boundary. In the APA’s report on an April 18–25, 2025 Harris/APA Poll of 1,076 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, 21% said they felt guilty taking time for themselves. The same report said 96% considered self-care important and 63% engaged in it at least weekly. Those figures describe attitudes and self-care, not the effects of saying no. What a boundary means—and what it does not
A boundary names a limit on your time, availability, energy, money, or participation. It does not automatically mean you reject or do not care about the person asking. It can make your commitments more realistic and your care more reliable.
#1 Best Overall
That idea is especially clear in therapy, where boundaries help define a professional relationship. Psychologist Teri Strong, speaking about clinical practice, said: “Boundaries are there to protect me and the client.” She described how letting sessions run long could send a mixed message about the therapeutic frame. That professional example illustrates one purpose of a limit; it is not a rule that every personal relationship should follow the same procedures.
How to reframe a boundary before you answer
Pause instead of agreeing automatically
If a request catches you off guard, you do not have to decide immediately. Sah suggests a holding response: “Let me get back to you about that.” Use the pause to consider what is being asked, whether you want to do it, and what you can realistically manage.
Rank #2
Check the request against your values and capacity
Ask yourself what matters in this situation and what you can offer without making a commitment you cannot keep. A boundary is not automatically the answer to every difficult request; the point is to choose deliberately rather than say yes from pressure or habit.

Make the limit clear and proportionate
State the relevant limit briefly. You can acknowledge the other person’s need without turning your answer into a long defense or negotiation. For example: “I care about helping, but I can’t take that on this week.” Adapt the wording to the actual relationship and request rather than treating a script as a guaranteed solution.
Practice difficult words aloud
Sah recommends rehearsing a response before a hard conversation. She says practice helps “the mouth get used to saying it and the ears get used to hearing it.” Rehearsal can make the words feel more familiar; it cannot guarantee that the other person will agree or react well.
Why the right boundary depends on the situation
A personal limit with a friend, a work availability rule, and a therapist’s professional boundary are not interchangeable. Consider what the limit protects, what role or relationship you have, and whether you can explain it early and consistently. A schedule for after-hours messages, a session ending, and personal availability each have different context and obligations.
Rank #4
Clinical boundaries carry ethical and care responsibilities of their own. The APA’s listing for Ofer Zur’s Boundaries in Psychotherapy: Ethical and Clinical Explorations covers professional questions such as gifts, self-disclosure, dual relationships, bartering, home visits, and telehealth; it is a specialist reference, not a general guide to personal relationships. See the APA book listing.
When a script cannot solve the problem
Some limits are hard to establish because of workload, staffing, or workplace expectations—not because an individual has failed to find the perfect words. In an APA feature on self-care, Diane Bridgeman cautioned: “Top-down pressures are often not amenable to an individual just deciding to set boundaries.” The same article quotes Laura Boxley warning about strain among clinicians: “The risk of failing to establish healthy boundaries is that you are worse at everything, at home and at work.” Boxley’s statement concerns professional boundary strain; it is not a measured universal outcome for everyone. Read the APA feature on self-care.

In clinical practice, the pressure is measurable in profession-specific reporting: an APA feature published in 2025 reported that more than 50% of early-career psychologists with 10 or fewer years of experience agreed they felt burned out, compared with 18% of psychologists in advanced career stages, based on the APA’s 2024 Practitioner Pulse Survey. These figures concern psychologists, not the general public, and do not show that boundary setting caused or would prevent burnout. See the APA’s 2025 clinical-practice feature.
If a workplace repeatedly makes reasonable limits impossible, consider what can be addressed collectively or through a manager, supervisor, or other appropriate support. A personal script cannot by itself change organizational demands.
