How Search and Rescue Teams Find and Evacuate Injured Hikers

Search and rescue (SAR) teams locate an injured hiker by combining the information reported from the scene with ground searches, aerial reconnaissance, or both. Once rescuers reach the person, they assess and treat the injury, then choose an evacuation method that fits the terrain, weather, aircraft and patient. A helicopter may land nearby, but it may also deliver rescuers or extract someone by hoist or line when landing is not practical.

How an emergency report gives rescuers a place to start

The first useful details are what happened and where the person was last seen. The National Park Service (NPS) advises assessing the injury to decide whether to call 911 and sharing the last known location, including GPS coordinates if available. Those details help responders narrow the area to search; they do not by themselves determine how the person will be reached or evacuated. NPS emergency guidance

If there is no phone or signal, NPS advises asking hikers returning to the trailhead to notify park rangers. It also recommends that someone stay with the injured person until SAR arrives. NPS emergency guidance

When cell coverage is unavailable

A satellite messenger can be one way to report an emergency from a remote area. In one canyon rescue, hikers who could hear an injured backpacker but could not reach him used a satellite device to call for help and later communicated by satellite. Rescuers coordinated a briefing and helicopter insertion before a county SAR member reached the patient. The account does not identify the device or establish that every satellite communicator works the same way. NPS satellite-communication rescue account

How teams search for and reach the hiker

Teams may search from the ground, use aircraft for aerial reconnaissance, or combine the two. Aircraft can also move searchers closer to a location. The NPS Aviation Program says that some parks use their own aircraft, while others rely on military, state, county or other partners; aviation is one available resource, not a required part of every rescue. Air search with a ground follow-up

In a Yosemite rescue, a helicopter crew spotted two hikers and landed nearby. A four-person helicopter rescue team continued on foot to reach them and confirm that they needed immediate evacuation. The example shows how an aircraft can help locate people without completing the entire rescue itself. NPS Yosemite rescue report

Information from people already in the area

Other people in the backcountry may help confirm a location. In Wrangell-St. Elias, a local air taxi operator saw an injured hiker in a ravine and relayed the location to NPS. Park responders hiked from Kennecott to the patient, gave emergency medical care and consulted a physician by phone. NPS Wrangell-St. Elias rescue report

What happens after rescuers reach the patient

Finding a hiker is only part of the response. Rescuers assess the patient, provide care within their training and available resources, and work out a safe way to move the person. A route that seems short on a map may not be usable by an aircraft or safe for a ground team, so the evacuation plan depends on the actual site and circumstances.

In the Wrangell-St. Elias incident, responders first reached and cared for the patient on foot. Snow and terrain ruled out access by the park’s A-Star helicopter, so NPS requested a hoist-capable aircraft. A rescue team was lowered to the patient, provided further care, stabilized him for transport and extracted him by helicopter. At an airport, he was transferred to an air ambulance for onward transport. NPS Wrangell-St. Elias rescue report

How the evacuation method is chosen

The method depends on whether an aircraft can land, the terrain and weather, the patient’s condition, the aircraft and technical crew available, and where further medical transport can meet the patient. The NPS lists techniques including hoist, short-haul and rappel. These are specialized operations, not interchangeable options available at every site. The cited accounts offer examples, not a general ranking of methods or comparative success rates. NPS Aviation Program

Approach How it can be used What the examples establish
Land nearby, then continue on foot An aircraft may bring rescuers close to the scene, but the team may still need to walk to the patient. In Yosemite, a helicopter landed near two hikers and a rescue team reached them on foot. NPS Yosemite rescue report
Hoist A trained team can be lowered to a patient when landing or direct access is not feasible, then extract the patient by helicopter. In Wrangell-St. Elias, snow and terrain prevented the park helicopter from reaching the site; a hoist-capable aircraft was requested. NPS Wrangell-St. Elias rescue report
Short-haul A person is suspended below a helicopter on a rope; the technique can move a patient to a place where an ambulance can meet the aircraft. NPS describes a Grand Teton rescue in which a ranger assessed the patient and an aerial evacuation suit was used for the flight to an ambulance meeting point. NPS Grand Teton short-haul report
Long-line A helicopter can extract a patient when terrain or conditions prevent it from landing at the site. In a Denali incident reported May 29, 2026, a high-altitude helicopter could not land; rescuers used a long-line extraction and moved the climber to Kahiltna Base Camp. NPS Denali update

The Denali report also describes other climbers being extracted in rescue baskets to a camp, evaluated by medical personnel and transferred onward. The different outcomes in that incident illustrate why the site and patient circumstances shape the plan rather than one extraction technique serving every case. NPS Denali update

Where the patient goes after extraction

A helicopter evacuation does not always mean a direct flight to a hospital. The NPS says patients may be flown either to the nearest hospital or to a landing zone for ground transport. Depending on the location and available services, a patient may first be moved to a base camp, airport or other transfer point, then continue by ambulance or air ambulance. NPS Aviation Program

For example, the Wrangell-St. Elias patient was taken by helicopter to an airport and transferred to an air ambulance, while the Denali climber was moved to Kahiltna Base Camp. Those are incident-specific routes, not a standard destination for every rescue. NPS Wrangell-St. Elias rescue report NPS Denali update
