Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHistorical handwriting recognition (HTR) depends on more than reading handwriting: the system first needs usable text lines. If layout analysis merges neighboring lines, crops part of one, misses it, or gets the reading order wrong, recognition starts with defective input. The hidden tax is the extra human work to find and correct those errors, then retrain or rerun the workflow—not a universal accuracy penalty or cost that has been quantified across collections.
What is line segmentation in HTR?
Many HTR workflows first detect page regions and text lines, then recognize the text in each line image. Segmentation and recognition are distinct tasks, even when a platform brings them together. Kraken’s version 6.0.0 documentation explains that segmentation finds lines and regions on a page, while recognition converts line images into text; it also says both can be trained. The distinction matters because the two tasks need different labels. Segmentation examples can include region polygons and line baselines; recognition examples need the transcribed content of those lines. Formats such as PAGE XML and ALTO can carry relevant layout and transcription information for training.

Why does handwriting recognition get lines mixed up?
Historical pages are not always neat rows of text. Irregular columns, marginal notes, interlinear glosses, skew, warped pages, and degraded images can complicate layout detection. A line detector may join two lines into one image, crop away part of a line, omit a line, or assign text in the wrong reading order. A recognizer can then appear to misread handwriting when the input itself is incomplete or incorrectly grouped.

A 2018 study by Edgard Chammas, Chafic Mokbel, and Laurence Likforman-Sulem describes wrong segmentation—including two text lines in one image or a cropped line—as reasons candidate training lines were discarded. The authors wrote, in the context of their study, “However, the best recognition results are still achieved by the systems working at the line level.” Handwriting Recognition of Historical Documents with few labeled data.
Segmentation errors also reduce the amount of usable labeled training material: a line that cannot be reliably isolated or transcribed is not a clean example. That adds correction and reprocessing work, but available evidence does not establish a universal share of HTR labor or a general monetary cost.
How do I fix bad line detection in historical documents?
1. Preserve detail in the source image
Kraken 6.0.0 recommends high-quality color or grayscale scans at 300 dpi or higher, using lossless formats such as TIFF or PNG. Its documentation cautions that relaxing scan requirements can reduce accuracy. Depending on the source, correcting skew or warping and removing speckles may help. These are source-preparation suggestions, not a guarantee that segmentation will be correct. Kraken 6.0.0 Training Tutorial.

2. Inspect the page structure before recognition
Check how the document is organized before accepting detected lines: look for columns, marginalia, interlinear text, and multiple scripts. eScriptorium describes support for such layouts and scripts, but a system’s capabilities do not replace checking whether its segmentation matches the particular page. About eScriptorium.
3. Keep layout labels separate from transcription labels
When correcting examples, distinguish the geometry of the text—regions and baselines—from what the line says. That makes it easier to tell whether a failure comes from line detection, reading order, or recognition, and gives each training task the information it needs.
4. Validate on held-out pages and inspect failures
Reserve pages for validation rather than judging a model only on the examples used to train it. Kraken’s tutorial notes that its default validation split is random and recommends explicit fixed manifests in most scenarios so results can be compared consistently across runs. Inspect segment-level failures: merged lines, cropped lines, missed text, and incorrect reading order. Correct them and retain those corrections as ground truth.

5. Iterate with human review
eScriptorium describes a human-in-the-loop workflow: manually segment and transcribe a subset, train a model, validate or correct its output, and use those corrections to refine the ground truth. Its documentation says, “The platform operates on the principle that high-accuracy transcription of historical sources requires iterative training, integrating the human-in-the-loop methodology directly into the user interface.” About eScriptorium.
The useful loop is not “train once and trust every line.” Keep representative corrections, retrain when the evidence supports it, and check whether changes improve results on the same held-out material.
Can HTR work without manually drawing every line?
Training or using a segmentation model can reduce the need to draw every line by hand, but the supplied documentation does not establish that manual review can be eliminated for every collection. How much correction remains depends on page condition, layout, script, and how well the model fits the material.

Training quantities are context-specific, not universal prescriptions. In Kraken 6.0.0 documentation, around 800 lines is an example for a particular recognition model with a small grapheme inventory; manuscripts, complex scripts, and models covering multiple hands need more data for comparable accuracy. A 2018 study used 10% of manually labeled text-line data from the READ dataset to bootstrap its incremental training procedure and reported a 20% relative decrease in raw label error rate on its validation set after retraining with selected lines. Those figures belong to that method and dataset; they are not general minimums or expected gains for another project. Kraken 6.0.0 Training Tutorial; 2018 study.

Tools should be compared against the collection and working process, not a claimed universal winner. Consider layout and reading-order control, support for segmentation and recognition training, correction and collaboration, deployment needs, export formats, and fit for the collection’s scripts and page structures.

- Transkribus: A commercial platform. A 2025 report on the Joseph Hooker Correspondence Project describes using it alongside eScriptorium and notes marginal error-rate differences after sufficient ground truth had been established. - Hybrid workflow: The same project report describes Transkribus as volunteer-facing and eScriptorium as the open-source model-training component. A hybrid approach may suit teams that need both a volunteer-facing interface and reusable training data or local control, provided exports and procedures work together. Do not compare error rates across tools unless the documents, transcription conventions, segmentation policy, and train/test split are the same. A result from one project is not a reliable prediction for a different collection.

What should you measure in your own project?
Because no general statistic establishes segmentation’s share of HTR labor or cost, measure it locally. Track time spent correcting line boundaries and reading order, the number of segments that need repair, and how many candidate training lines are unusable. Compare those figures across representative pages and workflow iterations. This reveals whether the main bottleneck is image quality, layout, segmentation, or transcription, without mistaking a recognizer’s text error for the whole problem.
If paper originals still need digitizing, use source-image requirements as the starting point: high-quality color or grayscale at 300 dpi or higher, saved losslessly. The documentation cited here gives imaging guidance, not an evaluation or endorsement of any scanner.
