Satellite internet latency varies for two different reasons: the signal may have a long, orbit-dependent path through space, and the connection can also experience changing interruptions or network conditions. A higher orbit generally means a longer propagation delay. A blocked view of the sky, meanwhile, can cause dropouts and retransmissions without changing the physical distance to the satellite.
The practical implication is important: you can often improve stability by relocating or safely raising a terminal, but no mount can make a geostationary satellite behave like a low-Earth-orbit system. To diagnose a high or inconsistent ping, first separate baseline round-trip time (RTT) from packet loss, interruptions and short-term variation.

What satellite latency measures
Latency is the time required for data to travel between two endpoints. Internet tests usually report round-trip time (RTT): the time for a packet to reach a destination and for a response to return. A low download speed can make a connection feel slow, but speed and latency are different measurements. Latency affects how quickly an action begins; throughput affects how much data can arrive at once.

Data travels from your terminal to a spacecraft, down to a gateway or another terminal, across terrestrial networks, and back through the satellite path when the response returns. The space portion cannot be shorter than the distance imposed by the satellite’s orbit and the route geometry. Even with an excellent local Wi-Fi network, that propagation component remains.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) places geostationary-orbit (GEO) satellites about 35,786 kilometres above the equator. That altitude creates noticeable delay for two-way, live applications such as video calls. Medium-Earth-orbit (MEO) satellites operate below GEO, while low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites operate much closer to Earth. As Ruth Pritchard-Kelly of the Secure World Foundation put it, “The term satellite ‘no longer refers to a single technology. It’s a whole range of technologies.’” The orbit class is therefore the first question to ask when comparing satellite services.
How orbit changes the baseline RTT
The ITU’s Last-Mile Connectivity Solutions Guide (2020) gives broad, illustrative round-trip ranges:
| Orbit class | Approximate RTT in the ITU illustration | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| GEO | Approximately 477 ms | The long path can be obvious in interactive conversations and fast-action applications. |
| MEO | Approximately 27–477 ms | The range is wide because altitude and network design differ across systems. |
| LEO | Approximately 2–27 ms | Closer satellites generally provide a lower propagation component. |
These are orbit-class illustrations from the ITU, not guaranteed household measurements. A user’s complete RTT also includes the terminal, satellite and gateway equipment, terrestrial routing, processing time and the destination server. A service using LEO satellites can still show a higher ping to a distant or busy destination than its orbit-only figure suggests.
The ITU notes that GEO latency can remain acceptable for some streaming, voice and video-call uses. Buffered video can absorb delay because it stores data before playback. A conversation or competitive game is less forgiving: the delay is felt each time one person waits for a response or an action reaches a server. The same service can therefore be satisfactory for one task and frustrating for another.
Why your measured ping changes
Satellite position and changing geometry
LEO and MEO spacecraft move relative to the ground. The distance and angle between your terminal, the serving satellite and the gateway change during a session. A constellation may hand traffic from one spacecraft or beam to another as satellites move. ITU-R M.2177-0 (February 2026) identifies delay variation and Doppler variation associated with moving spaceborne vehicles, along with the long latency created by vehicle altitude. That movement helps explain why a low-orbit service does not produce one perfectly fixed number.

Interruptions are not the same as propagation delay
An obstruction between a terminal and the usable part of the sky can interrupt the radio link. Trees, rooflines, poles and nearby structures may block part of the terminal’s view. During an interruption, packets can be delayed, lost or retransmitted, so an application may report spikes or timeouts. Removing the obstruction can make the connection more stable, but it does not reduce the distance to the orbit or erase the baseline propagation delay.
Routing, processing and busy periods
Your ping includes more than the space leg. The provider’s gateway, its backbone, the destination network and the server’s own location all matter. Queueing or changed routes can add delay at particular times. Starlink says actual speeds may be lower during high usage and that its service and performance can change; the reviewed provider material does not establish a universal adjustment that fixes congestion or routing for every customer. Treat a temporary spike as a symptom to measure, not proof that your dish needs a different angle.

Weather and local networking
Rain, snow or other environmental conditions can affect some radio links, while Wi-Fi interference, a saturated home router or a busy device can affect the final hop inside your home. The available sources do not quantify how much each factor contributes to consumer latency, so do not assign a precise percentage to weather, congestion or routing without measurements from your provider. Test the satellite connection separately from the local network before drawing a conclusion.
What published provider figures actually tell you
Starlink’s published specifications state that land latency is typically 25–60 ms. The same specification says latency can exceed 100 ms in certain remote locations, including oceans, islands, Antarctica, Alaska and Northern Canada. “Typically” is part of the claim: these are not a promise for every location, destination or time. Starlink also says stated performance is not guaranteed, actual speeds may be lower during high usage and service is subject to change.
On its Beam Switching page, Starlink reports a 25.7 ms median peak-hour latency in the United States. That is a company-reported statistic, with no publication date stated on the page. It should not be generalized to other countries, off-peak periods, remote locations or every subscriber. The figures have not been independently validated by the sources considered here.

How to diagnose a high or unstable satellite ping
1. Establish a comparable baseline
- Use the same device, Ethernet connection or Wi-Fi location for each test.
- Test the same destination or provider diagnostic, rather than comparing a game server with a nearby speed-test server.
- Record the date, time, RTT, packet loss and whether a call, game or download was running.
- Repeat at quiet and busy times. A single unusually high result cannot distinguish a persistent path problem from a temporary event.
Keep the measurements together. A high but steady RTT points toward the route and orbit’s baseline; intermittent spikes paired with packet loss point more strongly toward interruptions or another unstable link.
2. Check the terminal’s sky view
Use the provider’s obstruction and alignment tools before committing to a permanent installation. Starlink specifically recommends checking obstructions in its app and mounting higher where possible. Walk through the scan slowly enough to identify whether a tree, roof edge, pole or neighboring structure occupies the blocked area.
3. Improve the location only when it is safe
If the scan identifies a blockage, try a clearer location or raise the terminal above the obstruction. Starlink lists compatible mounts and poles or towers as possible approaches. Confirm that the proposed mount is designed for the terminal, can withstand local wind and weather, and has a safe cable route. Do not climb onto a roof or erect a tower without the equipment and skills required; use a qualified installer when the work cannot be performed safely.
4. Re-test after each change
Move one variable at a time, allow the service to settle, then repeat the same tests from step one. Compare interruption frequency and packet loss as well as the median RTT. A clearer view may eliminate dropouts while leaving the normal ping almost unchanged. That outcome means the mount solved a blockage problem, not that the orbit became faster.
5. Escalate a persistent fault
If the connection remains poor with a clear sky view, gather the time-stamped results and contact provider support. Include the terminal location, the diagnostic results, affected applications and whether the issue is constant or limited to certain hours. Use the provider’s documented tools and measurements rather than assuming a universal tweak exists for congestion or routing.

What you can and cannot change
| Action | Likely effect | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Clear an obstruction | Fewer dropouts, retransmissions and interruption-related spikes. | Does not shorten the satellite path or guarantee a lower baseline RTT. |
| Raise or relocate a terminal | May improve the usable sky view when installed safely. | Must be compatible with the terminal and structurally safe; orbit-dependent delay remains. |
| Use Ethernet for testing | Removes much of the home Wi-Fi as a confounding variable. | Cannot change the provider’s space or backbone path. |
| Test at different times | Shows whether results vary with operating conditions or busy periods. | Does not by itself identify or cure congestion. |
| Change the satellite service | May change the orbit class, route and expected latency. | Availability, geography and provider claims must be checked; no controlled current cross-provider comparison is established here. |
How to compare satellite services intelligently
Start with orbit class, then examine the provider’s own latency definition and geography. A “typical” land figure, a median peak-hour result and a best-case laboratory number are not interchangeable. Check whether the number is RTT, one-way delay or an application-specific measurement; whether it applies to your country; and whether it is a guarantee or an estimate.
- Orbit: GEO generally carries the greatest propagation delay, LEO the least, with MEO spanning a broad middle range.
- Coverage: Confirm that the service is available at your address and whether remote or ocean regions receive different performance.
- Variation: Ask how the provider handles satellite motion, beam switching, interruptions and peak periods.
- Measurement: Prefer repeated, same-destination RTT and packet-loss results over a single headline ping.
- Application fit: Synchronous gaming, remote desktop work and live calls are sensitive to delay and jitter; buffered streaming can tolerate more delay.
No source considered here provides a controlled, current comparison across satellite providers. Use published figures as scoped expectations, not as a ranking that predicts every household’s experience.
Choosing expectations by use case
Video calls and voice
Conversation remains possible on higher-latency services, but participants may need to pause longer before responding. Stability matters as much as the nominal RTT: a short interruption can freeze audio or video even when the average ping looks reasonable.
Gaming
Fast multiplayer games expose both baseline delay and jitter. A lower-orbit service can reduce the propagation component, but the game server’s distance, routing and packet loss still determine the result. A mount can prevent obstruction-related disconnects; it cannot make a GEO route feel like a local terrestrial connection.
Streaming and downloads
Streaming platforms buffer content, so a stable connection with higher RTT may work acceptably. Downloads are usually dominated by throughput after the transfer starts, although a high or unstable RTT can make interactive controls and small requests feel sluggish.
Bottom line
Satellite latency is not one number. Orbit sets a physical floor for propagation delay, while spacecraft motion, beam changes, routing, processing, local networking and interruptions shape the end-to-end result you observe. Measure under comparable conditions, inspect the terminal’s obstruction view, improve the installation only when safe, and keep provider figures tied to their stated geography, time basis and caveats. A clearer mount can make service dependable; it cannot remove inherent satellite-path latency.
