FAT32 and NTFS appear in multiple manufacturer guides, while exFAT and other formats depend on the exact TV model and platform. Check your TV’s model-specific manual before formatting a drive. Also, a TV recognizing a USB drive does not mean it can play every video or audio file on it: drive file system and media format are separate compatibility questions.
What “USB format” means on a TV
People use “USB format” to mean two different things. The first is the file system on the storage device—the way the TV and other devices organize and access the drive’s files. Examples include FAT32, NTFS and exFAT. A TV may fail to recognize the drive if its file system is unsupported.

The second meaning is the media format of a file stored on the drive. That includes its container and the audio and video codecs inside it. A drive can be recognized and its folders can appear, yet a particular video or song may not show up or play. File-system compatibility alone does not establish media playback compatibility; check the TV’s supported media types for the exact model as well.

Some television USB ports are reserved for service or maintenance, so a correctly formatted drive connected to one of those ports may not appear in the media player.

Which file systems do TVs support?
Compatibility varies by exact model, model family and platform. The manufacturer examples below illustrate why a brand-level rule is not reliable. Each source applies to the products or instructions it covers, not automatically to every TV sold under that brand.
| Manufacturer guidance | File systems or recommendations stated | Important scope |
|---|---|---|
| TCL Roku TV support | FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3 and HFS+ | The page separately lists media types and notes unsupported file types will not be displayed. It also warns that some drives may need more power than the TV supplies. |
| LG USA content-viewing guidance, published 2026-07-17 | Recommends FAT32 or NTFS; USB memory of 32 GB or less; external storage of 2 TB or less | These are LG’s recommendations in that guidance, not universal TV capacity limits. It cautions that larger devices may not work smoothly. |
| LG USA recognition troubleshooting, published 2025-11-06 | Lists FAT32, exFAT or NTFS for the covered instructions | This is troubleshooting guidance, and its list differs from the separate LG content-viewing guidance. It also discusses power and safe ejection. |
| Sony UK model-family table | For many listed Android/Google TV models from 2015–2022: NTFS, FAT32, FAT16 and exFAT | The table says exFAT is not supported by the named X72K and W800 series. Use its specific product and system entries rather than applying the list to every Sony TV. |
| TCL UK USB-key guidance | Gives FAT32 guidance for the products covered | It also says some TV USB ports are for maintenance and advises checking the manual for a multimedia USB port. |
| Samsung electronic manual | Lists FAT, exFAT and NTFS | This is a model-specific manual, not a guarantee for all Samsung televisions. |
The different LG lists are a useful caution: even guidance from one manufacturer can address different products or support situations. Do not choose exFAT, NTFS or another format solely because a general article says a brand supports it. Find the precise model number—usually on the television’s label or in its settings—and follow the matching support page or manual.

How to choose a drive setup for your TV
Pick a setup by checking the TV and the content, rather than assuming one file system is best for every television. A simple compatibility decision has four parts:
- Check the exact model’s file-system list. Look for the model number in the current manufacturer manual or support page. Confirm whether it names FAT32, NTFS, exFAT or another system, and whether any stated capacity guidance applies.
- Confirm the port supports media. Consult the manual for a multimedia or media-playback USB port. A port marked for service or maintenance is not necessarily usable for opening videos or music.
- Check the media-player requirements. If the drive appears but a file is missing or will not play, look up the supported container and audio/video codecs for the TV. The file system on the drive does not tell you whether the player supports the file’s encoding.
- Match capacity and power to the TV. Follow any model-specific capacity recommendation and check the storage device’s power needs. A bus-powered external hard drive can require more power than a TV port provides.
There is no universal “best format” to substitute for these checks. The best choice is the one named for your television and compatible with the way you plan to use the files. If a drive contains valuable files, copy them elsewhere before making a format change.

Why a TV may not recognize a USB drive
When the drive does not appear at all, separate port, file-system and power problems instead of repeatedly reformatting it. Work through these checks in order:
- Wrong USB port: Verify that the connected port is for multimedia playback, not maintenance. TCL UK specifically directs users to consult the TV manual to identify a multimedia port.
- Unsupported file system: Compare the drive’s file system with the exact model’s support information. Manufacturer lists differ, including within the same brand’s guidance, so another model’s compatibility is not enough.
- Insufficient power: This is a possible issue with external hard drives, particularly bus-powered models. LG USA’s troubleshooting guidance cites 5 V and 500 mA or less as a recommended external-drive rating; treat that as the recommendation in its covered instructions, not a universal requirement for all TVs. TCL also warns that some drives may need more power than the TV can supply. If the manual supports it, a separately powered drive may address a power shortfall.
- Storage capacity outside the recommendation: Check the model’s own guidance. LG USA’s 2026 content-viewing page recommends USB memory of 32 GB or less and external storage of 2 TB or less, and cautions that larger devices may not work smoothly. Those figures are LG recommendations for that guidance, not limits to apply to other brands.
- Connection accessories: If the manufacturer manual warns against extension cables or hubs, connect the drive directly as instructed. Do not assume an added cable or hub is approved for the TV’s USB connection.
LG USA’s troubleshooting page identifies incompatible file systems and insufficient hard-drive power as possible causes of recognition problems. If the drive remains undetected after checking the applicable requirements, follow the TV maker’s troubleshooting procedure for that exact model before erasing or repartitioning the drive.

Why a recognized drive may still show no playable files
If folders appear but a particular file does not, or playback fails, focus on the TV’s media-player support rather than changing the drive’s file system first. TCL’s Roku TV guidance treats storage file systems and media types separately, and says unsupported file types will not be displayed. Sony likewise warns that playback may fail even when a format is supported and points users to model-specific compatibility information.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the TV’s model-specific supported containers and audio/video codecs against the file that fails.
- Confirm that the media player supports the relevant file type; a drive being listed in the TV’s USB browser proves only that the device is accessible, not that every file is playable.
- If other files on the same drive appear and play, that is a useful clue to investigate the failing file’s format rather than immediately reformatting the entire drive.
Do not infer support for a video or audio file from a list of drive file systems. The two compatibility lists answer different questions.

Formatting safely
Formatting changes the drive’s file system and erases the data already stored on it. LG USA’s troubleshooting guidance states: “When formatted, all data saved on the USB storage device is deleted and the file system is formatted to FAT32, exFAT or NTFS.” That statement describes the formatting process in LG’s covered instructions; it is not a universal list of formats supported by every TV.
Quick Recap
- Identify the TV model and its required format. Do not begin formatting until the manual or support instructions for that model identify a compatible file system and any relevant storage-size limits.
- Back up the drive. Copy anything you need to keep to another storage location. Formatting deletes the existing data on the USB device.
- Format only if necessary. Use the method and file-system options supported by your devices and the TV’s instructions. A format that works for one television may not work for another.
- Reconnect and test. Use the confirmed media USB port, then check whether the TV detects the drive and whether the intended content appears. If the drive appears but media does not, investigate file support separately.
- Eject safely where the TV provides that option. Use the television’s safe-eject function before disconnecting the storage device, as described in the applicable instructions.
A quick diagnostic path
Use the symptom to decide what to check next:
- Nothing happens when connected: Check that the port is for media, then check model-specific file-system support and drive power.
- The TV detects the drive but not the files: Confirm that the folders and file types are supported by the TV’s media player; unsupported types may not be displayed.
- Some files appear but will not play: Check container and codec compatibility for the exact model rather than assuming the drive format is at fault.
- A large external drive is unreliable: Compare its capacity and power requirements with the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance, and avoid assuming another model’s stated limit applies.
- You are about to reformat: Verify the required format first and back up the drive, because formatting erases its contents.
