Humanoid robots will be able to work around people only when the safety of each deployment is managed—not simply because a robot model has safety features. That means assessing the task, tools, workspace, safeguards, maintenance and human factors together. Safety is a practical condition for sustained use, but the available evidence does not prove it will be the only factor deciding the market.
What “safe to work alongside” actually means
A robot’s safety is a property of the whole application, not just the machine. ISO makes that distinction in its 2025 industrial-robot standards: ISO 10218-1 addresses the robot as machinery, while ISO 10218-2 addresses integration and robot applications. A robot operating near people on a particular site therefore cannot be judged from its model name or a list of built-in features alone.

The same machine can face different hazards depending on what it is asked to do, what it carries or operates, where people can enter, and how the system behaves during a fault or recovery. A risk assessment needs to consider the intended task and work environment, human access, movement and stability, possible contact, tools and payloads, sensing and stopping behavior, integration safeguards, maintenance and setup, and worker training and work organization. These are dimensions to assess, not a checklist that by itself certifies a system.

Scope is important: a standard for industrial robots should not be treated as a universal standard for every humanoid in every setting. The following status reflects the cited ISO, OSHA and EU-OSHA information as of October 3, 2026; standards and legal status can change.

| Reference | What it covers | Important scope or status |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 10218-1:2025 | Industrial robot requirements | Addresses the robot as machinery. Its stated exclusions include service robots accessible to the public and consumer products. |
| ISO 10218-2:2025 | Industrial robot integration and applications | Addresses the application and integration, rather than only the robot itself. |
| ISO 13482:2014 | Personal-care robots, including mobile servant, physical assistant and person-carrier robot types | The published 2014 edition includes physical-contact applications. ISO says this edition is to be revised. |
| ISO/FDIS 13482 | Revised service-robot requirements for personal and professional or commercial applications, including physical human-robot contact | ISO lists it as a final draft in approval. It is not a published final standard. |
| ANSI/A3 R15.06-2025 | US national adoption of ISO 10218-1:2025 and ISO 10218-2:2025 | The catalog entry identifies the adoption; it does not make ISO 10218 a universal standard for public-access or consumer humanoids. |
United States: OSHA guidance and consensus standards
OSHA says there are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry. It points employers toward consensus standards and workplace-safety guidance; those references should not be described as OSHA regulations. OSHA also notes that many robot accidents occur during programming, maintenance, testing, setup and adjustment, when workers may enter the robot’s working envelope. Routine operation is only part of the safety picture.
European Union: machinery law and AI-related duties
EU-OSHA describes requirements under European machinery law and notes that Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from January 20, 2027. It also says AI systems that serve as machinery safety components or perform safety-critical functions may trigger requirements under the AI Act. Which duties apply depends on the system and its use; operators and suppliers should check the current legislation and harmonized-standard status for the specific deployment.

What can go wrong in a robot workplace?
OSHA and EU-OSHA guidance on robotics and collaborative robots identifies hazards relevant to assessing humanoid deployments, but these sources do not provide humanoid-specific injury rates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Unexpected motion or contact: a collision can injure a worker, especially if the person is in the robot’s working envelope.
- Crushing or entrapment: a person can be caught between the robot and nearby equipment or structures.
- Tools and payloads: an end tool can create its own hazard, while an object can be released or become a flying-object hazard.
- Fluid or pressure failures: hydraulic or pneumatic failures can introduce additional risks.
- Non-routine access: programming, setup, adjustment, testing, maintenance and recovery can bring people into areas where the robot may move or restart.
- Work-organization effects: ergonomic demands and psychosocial factors—including work intensity, autonomy, surveillance and working alone—also deserve attention.
The sources identify these as general robotics and collaborative-robot concerns. They do not establish how often a humanoid robot causes a particular injury, or how its injury risk compares with other equipment.

What does a current humanoid example show?
Agility Robotics reports that Digit has accumulated more than 65,000 hours of operating time. That is a company-reported operational-hours figure, not an independently verified safety outcome, injury rate or comparison with other robots.
For Digit 5, Agility describes an independent safety controller, safe human detection, a physical emergency stop and pendant-based manual override. The company says the robot is designed for cooperative work near people, while its product page also says Digit 5 is in development, features and specifications may change, and some safety features remain in development. Agility cautions: “Safety features do not eliminate all operational risk.” These are vendor claims and disclosures, not proof here of independent certification or reduced injuries.

How to assess a proposed deployment
For a buyer, site operator or worker evaluating a humanoid, useful questions concern the whole installation and the evidence behind its safeguards:
- Use and access: Is the robot in a restricted industrial workspace, a shared workplace or a public-access service setting? Which standard actually covers that context?
- Task and integration: What will it do, what tools or payloads will it handle, and what hazards arise from the floor plan, nearby structures and other equipment?
- Safety functions: What sensing, motion-control and stopping functions are present? Is there a manual override or independent safety control, and under what conditions have these functions been validated?
- People and work practices: Who can enter the area, including during setup and maintenance? How are training, ergonomics, workload, monitoring and recovery handled?
- Evidence: Is a claim grounded in a published standard, a third-party assessment, a site-specific risk assessment or vendor material? Are the conditions and limitations clear?
An emergency-stop button, human-detection feature or hours-of-operation total can be relevant evidence, but no single feature or figure establishes that a particular deployment is safe. The sources cited here do not support ranking humanoid manufacturers by safety.
