An RTX 5090 power connector can overheat when electrical contact is incomplete or uneven, concentrating heat at the connection. Cable strain or a tight bend near the plug can worsen that risk. Fully seat the connector, keep the cable gently routed, and check that nothing presses against it. The newer 12V-2×6 design reduces a known risk from partial insertion, but it does not make a connection immune to heat or damage.
How a loose or stressed connection can overheat
The 16-pin connector used by the RTX 5090 is the revised 12V-2×6 interface, compatible with the earlier 12VHPWR interface. In either design, the plug must make good contact with the socket. If it is not fully inserted, the effective contact between terminals and pins may be reduced or uneven. That can increase resistance and concentrate heat at the connection.

Cable strain can add mechanical stress near the plug. A tight bend or sideways pull may disturb a marginal connection or put uneven pressure on small terminals. CableMod warns that bending wires too close to the connector can loosen or misalign terminals, and describes horizontal bending as a higher-risk orientation. Those are the vendor’s warnings, not a universal laboratory-validated threshold for every cable design.
GamersNexus reported reproducing melting in 12VHPWR testing with a partly inserted plug pulled sideways, and described finding partial-insertion marks on some examined adapters. That demonstrates a hazard in the tested circumstances; it does not establish the cause of every RTX 5090 incident.

What 12V-2×6 changes—and what it does not
ASUS describes the revised connector as having power pins 0.25 mm longer and sense pins 1.5 mm shorter than 12VHPWR. In the intended sequence, the power contacts seat before the sense contacts engage, reducing the chance that a partly connected plug powers the GPU. GamersNexus also reports PCIe CEM 5.1 changes that include extended power and ground pins, shortened sideband pins, and required monitoring of both sense pins by add-in-card partners.
These changes address a known partial-insertion hazard; they do not show that every possible contact, cable-routing, or current-distribution risk has been eliminated. The PCIe specification sentence reproduced by GamersNexus says the 12V-2×6 connector can deliver up to 55 A of continuous current for a maximum of 600 W of additional power to an add-in card on a 12 V rail. That is the connector specification’s stated capacity, not a claim that every RTX 5090 draws 600 W through the connector.

How to seat and route the cable safely
- Check compatibility first. For a new setup, ASUS recommends a PSU with a native 12V-2×6 cable. If using a replacement modular PSU cable, verify that it is approved for the exact PSU model. A plug that fits is not proof that its pinout is compatible.
- Seat the plug fully. At the GPU end, the connector should sit flush with no visible gap. Check the connection at the PSU end as well, following the GPU and PSU makers’ instructions.
- Leave room before the first bend. CableMod recommends at least 35 mm of straight cable between the connector and the first bend. Treat this as CableMod’s guidance; cable designs may differ.
- Keep the route free of pressure. Avoid a tight bend, sideways force close to the connector, or a case panel and other obstruction pressing on the cable. After cable management, check the route before closing the case.
- Do not repeatedly unplug it for routine checks. ASUS warns that repeated mating can degrade the connection. Inspect it when there is a reason to do so, and follow the maker’s guidance rather than making repeated insertions part of routine monitoring.
What to do if you see damage or suspect a problem
Melting, discoloration, deformation, an unusual odor, or system instability warrants stopping use of the system. Contact the graphics-card or PSU maker, or a qualified repair service. Do not assume that replacing only the cable makes a visibly damaged socket safe; the socket and other affected parts may also need inspection.

Monitoring features are model-specific, not a guarantee
Some products advertise additional monitoring, but availability depends on the exact model. ASUS describes Power Detector+ as per-pin current monitoring on supported ROG Astral cards. MSI describes abnormal-current alerts on specified GPU Safeguard PSUs; its January 2026 report says the alerts are audible and that Plus models also provide an MSI Center pop-up. Neither feature is established as a guarantee against connector damage.

And it needs to be worked with the original power cable.
- 【16AWG Tinned Copper Wire】Fasgear 12V-2x6 PCI-e 5.1 extension cable contains 16AWG tinned copper wire. Compared with the standard 18AWG power cord, this updated 16AWG tinned copper wire can bring stable voltage transmission and higher power output. Meanwhile, this tinned copper can prevent oxidation. As for the 12+4pin connector, 2 of 4 pins are connected with power wires while another 2 pins are GND wires
ASUS also reports its own ROG Equalizer cable tests: in an intentionally extreme current-imbalance test, it says a modified standard cable reached 146°C while the ROG Equalizer was around 74°C; it separately reports a 600 W test at 55°C ambient for ten days that remained under 105°C. These are ASUS-reported results under the stated test conditions, not independent comparisons or temperatures users should expect in ordinary systems.

Type A is for GPUs with the small 4pin above the 12pin connector. Type B is for GPUs with the small 4pin below the 12pin connector
- 【90 Degree Right Angled Design】The 90 degree gpu connector prevents the graphics card's standard cables from contacting the panel. This design effectively avoids excessive cable bending and produces less strain on the power cable from the panel
- 【Neat & Tidy Computer assembly 】Featuring a flexible nylon-braided jacket and three built-in movable zinc-alloy combs, this cable allows for tidy and efficient routing in a compact case. Its compact design minimises visible wires for a neat interior and superior airflow. It can be a useful addition to a PC setup
- 【16AWG Copper Wire & Up to 600W Output】Fasgear 90 Degree PCIE 5.0/5.1 GPU Extension Cable supports up to 600W output. It is built with 16AWG tinned copper wires and a tinned alloy copper 12V-2x6 H++ connector. Compared with the standard 18AWG power cord, this updated 16AWG tinned copper wire can bring stable voltage transmission and higher power output. Meanwhile, this tinned copper can prevent oxidation
- 【Important Tips】For RTX 50 series mid-to-high-end graphics cards, which can experience extreme power spikes under load, we recommend using a PSU compliant with ATX 3.0/3.1 standards and provide sufficient wattage. This ensures greater stability and helps avoid issues such as over-current protection triggers or voltage drops, which may lead to black screens or system restarts. (Note: For recommended PSU wattage by 50-series model, see the purchase guide images below)
For context only, GamersNexus quoted NVIDIA’s statement about the RTX 4090-era 12VHPWR issue that its findings suggested a common issue was connectors not being fully plugged into the graphics card. GamersNexus also estimated 0.04%–0.05% from roughly 50 reported global cases against approximately 125,000 RTX 4090s sold in the first month. Those are historical RTX 4090 figures, not an RTX 5090 failure count or rate.
