Power an ESP32 from a battery only through an input and regulator path rated for the battery’s full voltage range. To make it last longer, measure the project’s average battery-side current across a complete work-and-sleep cycle, then reduce unnecessary radio activity and switch off peripherals when they are not needed. Runtime depends on the exact board, battery, loads, and firmware duty cycle; there is no reliable one-size-fits-all duration.
Check the board and battery voltage before connecting them
Start with the documentation for your exact ESP32 board, not just the ESP32 chip. Check its permitted input range, pinout, regulator, battery connector, and whether it includes charging and protection circuitry for the cell you intend to use.

For the ESP32-WROOM-32 module, Espressif specifies a recommended supply range of 3.0–3.6 V, with 3.3 V typical, and an external supply capability of at least 0.5 A. These are module specifications, not a universal input specification for ESP32 development boards. See the ESP32-WROOM-32 datasheet.

Adafruit lists one 3.7 V, 2500 mAh battery as reaching 4.2 V when fully charged and providing about 10 Wh. Since 4.2 V is above the ESP32-WROOM-32’s 3.6 V supply maximum, do not connect that cell directly to the module’s 3.3 V rail. Use a battery input explicitly supported by your board, or a suitable power-conversion circuit. A battery listing alone does not establish that a board’s charger or protection system is compatible with it. See the Adafruit battery listing.

Match the power path to the cell and board
When choosing a board or converter, compare the battery’s voltage across charging and discharge with the board’s allowed input range. Also check regulated output voltage, peak current capability, regulator quiescent current, and efficiency under your actual load pattern. A low-quiescent-current regulator or buck-boost converter may be appropriate, but the right topology depends on the voltage ranges and board design.
If you want a development board with an integrated battery path, verify that the documentation covers the cell chemistry, charging, protection, connector, regulator, and sleep current. Do not assume that a connector marked for a battery makes every cell or charging arrangement suitable.
Estimate runtime from the complete project’s average current
Use battery capacity as a starting point and measure current at the battery over a representative operating cycle. Include startup, sensor readings, displays or LEDs, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth association and transmissions, peripheral startup, and sleep. The simple estimate is:

Ideal runtime in hours ≈ battery capacity in mAh ÷ average battery current in mA
For example, the arithmetic can use the 2500 mAh capacity stated for the Adafruit battery above, but that capacity does not predict a particular project’s runtime. The estimate is idealized: it does not account for converter losses, battery cutoff, cold or aged cells, self-discharge, changing radio conditions, or voltage sag during current peaks. Treat the result as an estimate, not a guarantee.
Measure the assembled system rather than using a chip sleep figure as a whole-board result. Espressif lists 10 µA for ESP32 chip deep sleep in its ESP32 Series Datasheet v5.3; regulators, LEDs, USB interfaces, sensors, pull resistors, and other board circuitry can raise system current.

Board-specific guidance shows how much readings can vary. Adafruit’s ESP32 Feather V2 power-management guide, last edited in 2024, gives rough figures of 100 mA or more in normal use, 2 mA in light sleep, and 100 µA in deep sleep when external hardware is powered down; elsewhere on the page it gives 70 µA for deep sleep. Those are vendor guide figures for that board and stated conditions, not universal ESP32 measurements.

Light sleep and deep sleep trade power use against what the application needs to retain and do after waking. Compare them using state retention, wake source, wake latency, restart and reconnect work, and measured current on your own assembly.
- Light sleep: Consider it when retained state or a quicker resume is useful. Measure the board and attached hardware rather than assuming a particular current.
- Deep sleep: Consider it when the application can restart and reinitialize after waking. Espressif says deep sleep powers off the CPUs, most RAM, and digital peripherals clocked from APB_CLK. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections are not maintained in light or deep sleep, so plan to reconnect when needed.
See Espressif’s ESP-IDF sleep modes documentation for sleep behavior and configuration details.

Reduce current during work and sleep
Use the radio only when the project needs it
Stop Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cleanly before sleeping if your application enabled them. If the task permits, disable radio use between exchanges; batching network updates can avoid keeping the radio active continuously. Account for the energy and time required to reconnect after wake-up when deciding how often to communicate.
Switch off external loads between measurements
Power down or power-gate sensors, displays, LEDs, and other peripherals that are not needed during sleep. An external component can dominate current even when the ESP32 itself is in a low-power mode.

Check GPIOs for leakage paths
External circuits can drive pins against internal pull-ups or pull-downs and increase deep-sleep current. Review pin states and external pull networks; where appropriate, Espressif’s guidance describes isolating GPIOs. Test changes on the assembled circuit, because the right pin configuration depends on what is connected. Espressif also discusses the sleep-power benefit of the ESP32 RC circuit in its ESP32 hardware design guidelines.

Do not overlook peak current
Average current determines the basic runtime estimate, but short peaks matter for reliable operation. Confirm the battery and conversion circuit can supply radio and startup transients without the voltage sagging enough to cause a brownout. For ESP32-WROOM-32, Espressif specifies at least 0.5 A of external supply capability; check the requirements of your exact board and peripherals as well.
Avoid assuming that powering down flash or changing an advanced sleep option will automatically save energy. Espressif notes that flash power-down behavior depends on hardware and timing and may need thorough verification.
Quick Recap
Measure and refine the full duty cycle
- Record the operating cycle. List when the ESP32 boots, reads sensors, lights indicators, connects to a network, transmits, and sleeps.
- Measure battery-side current. Capture active periods and sleep, then calculate the average over a representative complete cycle. Include external loads and conversion circuitry.
- Check peaks separately. Verify that voltage remains stable during startup and radio bursts, not only during steady operation.
- Change one major load at a time. Test radio scheduling, peripheral power control, and GPIO configuration separately so you can see which changes reduce measured current without breaking required behavior.
- Recalculate using measured current. Divide the battery’s rated capacity by the measured average battery current for an idealized estimate, then allow for conversion losses, cutoff, temperature, battery condition, and other real-world limits.
