Why Router Firmware Vulnerabilities Can Lead to Root Access—and How to Reduce the Risk

Some router firmware flaws can enable root-level command execution, but exposure depends on the exact model, version, and configuration. Check official updates, secure management access, and replace unsupported equipment.

Yes, some router firmware vulnerabilities can let an attacker run commands as root, the device’s highest privilege level. That is not the outcome of every flaw, and a vulnerability record applies only to the named models and versions it identifies. Check your exact router model and hardware revision against the vendor’s or internet service provider’s (ISP’s) current guidance, then install updates only through an official channel.

How a firmware flaw can become root access

Router firmware is the software that runs the administration interface, network services, and device configuration. A defect in one of those components can create an opening—for example, an attacker might bypass an access check, use credentials embedded in the firmware, or inject commands into a process.

The privilege of that process matters. If it runs as root, commands it accepts may also run with root privileges. Root access can give an attacker broad control over the router, but the path depends on the specific flaw; not every vulnerability permits command execution or root access.

A compromised router can affect more than its own settings because it sits between connected devices and the wider network. The consequences depend on the vulnerability, the router’s exposure, and the way the network is configured. NIST describes router cybersecurity as important to network integrity and availability in its September 2024 publication page for IR 8425A and the full report.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Documented examples are product- and version-specific

These records illustrate that root-level compromise is technically possible; they do not show that every router is vulnerable or that a reader’s router has been compromised. Verify applicability with the vendor or ISP rather than extrapolating from a product family name.

  • KAON CG3000T and CG3000TC: NVD’s CVE-2025-7072 record describes clear-text hard-coded credentials shared across units of affected models, which an unauthenticated remote attacker could use to execute commands with root privileges. The record lists fixed firmware versions 1.00.27 for CG3000T and 1.00.67 for CG3000TC. Confirm your exact model and hardware revision with your provider or the manufacturer.
  • Some ASUS routers: NVD’s CVE-2026-13313 record describes an active debug-code issue in which a remote authenticated user could send a crafted HTTP request, bypass protections, enable Telnet, and execute commands with root privileges. NVD points to an ASUS security advisory for details; the record does not provide enough affected-version detail here to list models or fixed versions responsibly.
  • MSI Radix AXE6600: NVD’s CVE-2026-71984 record describes command injection in the urlfilter function of firmware v781521, allowing remote attackers to execute commands and obtain root privileges. Consult MSI’s current guidance before drawing conclusions about other versions.

How to reduce the risk

1. Identify the exact router and check for firmware updates

  1. Find the model name and hardware revision on the router’s label, in its administration interface, or in the documentation. Record the installed firmware version as well.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model and revision. For ISP-supplied equipment, check the ISP’s support page or instructions; the provider may manage updates.
  3. Follow the official update instructions and install firmware that applies to your device. Avoid firmware files from unofficial mirrors, which may be incorrect or altered.

NIST’s 2024 consumer-router report recommends authenticated update mechanisms and signed software updates, and calls for ways to keep firmware current. NIST notes that an ISP may also cryptographically sign updates for routers it leases. The available update process varies by model and provider.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

2. Protect administration access

Change factory-default administrator credentials to a strong, unique password. Factory credentials are widely known, as the older US-CERT Small Office/Home Office Router Security guidance notes. A password change helps protect administration access; it cannot fix a flaw that does not require authentication.

Turn off remote administration, Telnet, or other management services if you do not need them, using the router’s official documentation. Restrict configuration interfaces to authorized users and necessary interfaces. NIST recommends controlling access to interfaces and permitting only those needed for router operation in its router cybersecurity report.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

3. Review configuration and activity for changes you do not recognize

Where the router provides logs or status information, look for unfamiliar administrator accounts, changed DNS or port-forwarding settings, unexpected remote access, or unexplained reboots. NIST identifies login attempts, administrative events, system status, and firewall status as useful cybersecurity state information. CISA also recommends reviewing router logs and configurations for unusual activity in its 2025 network-device guidance. An unfamiliar setting warrants investigation, but by itself does not prove a specific vulnerability was exploited.

4. Replace equipment that no longer receives security updates

If the vendor or ISP no longer provides security updates, replacing the router with a supported device may be the practical option. CISA recommends upgrading unsupported network devices in its 2025 guidance. Before choosing a replacement, check whether updates are delivered securely, how long support is expected to last, whether end-of-support dates are clear, whether it is compatible with your ISP, and whether you can disable unnecessary remote access and secure administration.

5. If you suspect compromise, use the provider’s recovery guidance

Contact the manufacturer or ISP if you cannot establish a safe recovery process. A factory reset may remove unauthorized configuration, but it does not repair vulnerable firmware. The model-specific recovery instructions should come from the vendor or provider; after following them, use supported, fixed firmware and change credentials from a trusted device.
