Why Rare Earth Magnets Corrode and How to Protect Them

Moisture, salt, and corrosive media can damage sintered NdFeB magnets. Compare coating options and practical steps for choosing, sizing, and handling them.

Rare earth magnets—especially sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB)—can corrode when moisture, salts, or other corrosive media reach the magnet material. A suitable coating helps keep those exposures out, but the right choice depends on the environment, risk of impact, and fit tolerances. Ni-Cu-Ni is a common starting point for dry indoor use; humid or outdoor service may call for epoxy, while chemical or medical applications may warrant asking about parylene. None is a universal guarantee.

Why do rare earth magnets corrode?

Sintered NdFeB magnets contain neodymium, iron, and boron. The material is sensitive to corrosion: moisture and salty environments can attack it, and the iron-bearing alloy can oxidize. Adding alloy components alone may not provide adequate protection, according to Yunsheng USA’s coating guidance; Dura Magnetics also describes NdFeB as highly reactive to moisture and salt.

As corrosion advances, oxide products consume magnet material and can make a part expand. That growth may interfere with neighboring components in an assembly. A rust spot does not, by itself, establish a particular loss of magnetic force: the rate and effect depend on the part and its exposure.

What coating should you choose?

Coatings create a barrier between the magnet and its surroundings. A defect, chipped edge, or mismatch between coating and exposure can undermine that barrier. The choices below are starting points from supplier guidance, not guarantees or a universal performance ranking.

Keep away from pacemakers and electronic screens. Not suitable for small children without adult supervision. Not recommended for stainless‑steel / glass refrigerator doors. The magnetic flux of our product is below 50 kG²/mm²
Finish or treatment Potential fit Trade-offs and checks
Ni-Cu-Ni (nickel-copper-nickel) Common, good-value choice for general dry indoor use. AHL says it is not suited to prolonged humidity. Nickel thickness is reported as about 0.01–0.02 mm; confirm the actual coating build and finished dimensions with the supplier.
Epoxy Worth investigating for humid or outdoor service where rust resistance matters. Edges can chip, and the coating is thicker than nickel according to AHL. Ask about the exact exposure, edge coverage, and dimensional allowance. Searching for epoxy-coated neodymium magnets may help identify factory-coated options, but the product specification still needs to match the application.
Parylene AHL identifies it for chemical or medical settings and describes it as thin and uniform. Have the supplier validate suitability for the specific chemicals and use. The general category does not establish a particular medical or food-contact approval.
Zinc A lower-cost conductive option, according to AHL. The surface can oxidize and discolor; it is not presented as the strongest choice for harsh conditions.
Passivation Temporary protection during storage and transport. It is not a substitute for a coating selected for long-term service in an aggressive environment.

How exposure changes the decision

Dry indoor use

For a magnet kept in ordinary dry indoor conditions, Ni-Cu-Ni is a reasonable starting point. It should not be treated as a choice for prolonged humidity without supplier confirmation.

Humidity, condensation, and outdoor weather

For humid or outdoor service, investigate epoxy and ask the supplier to assess the actual conditions. Condensation deserves special attention: the Vacuumschmelze VACODYM · VACOMAX catalog recommends coating when condensation occurs regularly. Outdoor exposure can combine wetting, drying, and temperature changes, so simply naming the location is not enough; describe how the magnet is installed and exposed.

Water, salt, or chemicals

For immersion or contact with corrosive media, ask for an application-specific recommendation rather than assuming a general-purpose finish will suffice. Vacuumschmelze recommends coating for magnets used in water or corrosive media. For chemical applications, ask whether parylene or another specified coating is appropriate for the particular substance and operating conditions.

How to specify and protect a magnet

  1. Identify the magnet and its current finish. Confirm whether it is sintered NdFeB and ask what coating or treatment it already has.
  2. Describe the real exposure to the supplier. State whether the part faces dry air, sustained humidity, regular condensation, outdoor weather, salt, immersion, cleaning chemicals, or process fluids. Include operating temperature and any abrasion or impact risk.
  3. Ask for an application-specific coating recommendation. Share the intended service and ask the supplier to confirm the coating’s suitability, including any relevant chemical or environmental limits. Manufacturer guidance stresses that full protection against surrounding media requires a coating selected for the application.
  4. Account for the finished dimensions. Coating thickness changes the part’s final size and clearance. AHL reports nickel thickness of about 0.01–0.02 mm and says epoxy is thicker; request the actual specification and tolerances for the magnet being made or supplied.
  5. Protect the coating during handling and assembly. Keep magnets from snapping together or striking hard surfaces. AHL warns that impact and edge collisions can chip nickel coating at corners, creating a route for exposure.

Is passivation enough for storage?

Passivation is described by Yunsheng as short-term protection for storage and transport, not a universal long-term guarantee. Yunsheng reports about 3–6 months of storage for its passivated magnets at 22°C and relative humidity no higher than 60%; it reports about seven days for unprotected magnets. These are supplier-specific estimates tied to the stated conditions, not general shelf-life promises. For longer storage or service in a corrosive environment, ask for the appropriate application coating.

What coating life can you expect?

The cited supplier guidance does not establish a universal service life, salt-spray rating, or durability interval for each coating across different magnet shapes and environments. A practical specification should therefore be based on the actual exposure and the supplier’s written information for the particular magnet and coating, rather than a generic claim that one finish lasts a set number of years.
