Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Escaping that trap means treating prevention, containment, and recovery as one practiced system—not as separate projects that begin after an incident.
What is the reactive security trap?
The trap is an organizational pattern: attention and resources surge after an attack, but preparation remains incomplete. Teams may have a response plan that has never been exercised, backups that have never been restored, or security tools that cannot compensate for excessive access or exposed systems.

This is a practical way to interpret official ransomware guidance, not a claim that every incident has the same cause. Ransomware can take advantage of compromised credentials, exposed remote services, or unpatched systems. Once attackers gain access, weak controls can make it harder to detect their activity, contain it, and restore operations safely.

Its central lesson is operational: safeguards matter most when they work as a connected chain before, during, and after compromise.

Why can ransomware cause more than encrypted files?
Encryption can disrupt access to systems and data, but it is not the only pressure an organization may face. In double extortion, attackers exfiltrate data as well as encrypt systems, creating risks of disclosure alongside operational disruption. Restoring files alone may therefore not resolve every consequence of an incident.
The joint FBI, CISA, and Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre advisory on Play ransomware reported approximately 900 affected entities known to the FBI as of May 2025. That figure describes entities known to the FBI by that date; it is not a global total or a current count.

How should an organization prepare before an attack?
Start with controls that reduce the chance of initial access and limit what a compromised account or device can reach. CISA’s guide recommends strengthening authentication, addressing exposed vulnerabilities, restricting remote access, and applying least privilege.

- Use phishing-resistant multifactor authentication (MFA) for services such as email and VPN, and for accounts that can access critical systems.
- Review privileged and service accounts so access is limited to what each role requires. Least privilege narrows the potential reach of a compromised account.
Reduce exposure to internet-facing systems
- Patch internet-facing systems promptly, prioritizing known exploited vulnerabilities.
- Limit Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and other remote desktop access. Keep such access restricted rather than broadly available.
Plan people, decisions, and communications
Maintain a cyber incident response plan and a communications plan. Assign clear roles, including who can authorize isolation or recovery decisions and who contacts internal and external responders. Exercise the plans so participants can identify gaps and clarify responsibilities before a real incident.

What makes a backup useful against ransomware?
A backup is useful only if attackers cannot readily compromise it and the organization can restore from it. CISA’s guidance is explicit: “Maintain offline, encrypted backups of critical data, and regularly test the availability and integrity of backups in a disaster recovery scenario.”
- Keep a protected copy: Maintain offline backups so they are not continuously accessible to systems that may be compromised. An external hard drive can be one way to create a disconnected copy, but it is only one component of a backup policy.
- Encrypt the backups: Protect the backup data itself, not just the systems that hold the original files.
- Cover critical assets: Define which data and systems are essential to restore; a copy that omits a critical system does not support a complete recovery.
- Test restoration: Regularly verify that backups are available and intact by restoring them in a disaster-recovery scenario. A successful backup job by itself does not demonstrate that recovery will work.
- Plan the rebuild: Establish recovery priorities and system rebuild plans, and account for how to avoid reinfection when systems return to service.
What should the organization do during an incident?
Follow the practiced response plan rather than improvising under pressure. The exact decisions depend on the affected environment, but the joint CISA guide’s response checklist supports a disciplined sequence:

- Identify affected systems: Establish which systems are impacted and what is known about the incident.
- Isolate affected systems: Contain impacted systems to limit further spread while responders assess the situation.
- Preserve relevant evidence: Retain evidence that may help responders understand the incident and support follow-up.
- Notify the right people: Contact appropriate internal and external responders through the planned communication channels.
- Recover carefully: Restore from offline backups, following recovery priorities and rebuild plans while taking care to avoid reinfection.
How can leaders tell whether preparedness is real?
Measure readiness by what the organization can demonstrate, not by whether a policy or tool exists. Use exercises and restore tests to expose weak links across prevention, containment, and recovery.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Readiness area | Question to test |
|---|---|
| Initial access | Are phishing-resistant MFA, prompt patching, restricted remote access, and least privilege in place where they matter? |
| Containment | Can responders identify impacted systems, isolate them, preserve evidence, and reach the people who must make decisions? |
| Backups | Are critical data copies offline and encrypted, and has restoration been tested for availability and integrity? |
| Recovery | Are recovery priorities and rebuild plans clear, including how to reduce the risk of reinfection? |
| Response practice | Have incident and communications plans been exercised with assigned roles and realistic decisions? |
If a team cannot answer these questions with evidence from a test or exercise, that is a preparation gap to address before an incident. The goal is not to promise that ransomware can never succeed; it is to reduce exposure, limit disruption, and make recovery dependable.
