That makes an antenna a handy analogy—but the more accurate description is that a raindrop is a lossy dielectric scatterer, not a purpose-built transmitting antenna.
How a raindrop interacts with a radio wave
An incoming electromagnetic wave drives an electrical response in water. Because water has frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric properties, the drop’s response differs from the surrounding air. The resulting fields reradiate some of the incoming energy in different directions; this is scattering.

Some scattered energy travels back toward the source. Weather radar detects that returned energy, or backscatter, to identify precipitation. Other energy travels forward or in other directions. The drop does not generate a signal on its own: it redirects part of the energy supplied by the incident wave.

What controls the scattering?
There is no single scattering behavior for every raindrop. The result depends on the drop and the radio wave, as well as on where the scattered energy is observed.
- Drop size and shape: A spherical-drop model is useful for calculations, but real drops need not be spherical. Shape can change the scattering pattern.
- Frequency and wavelength: The relationship between wavelength and drop dimensions affects how strongly and in what pattern energy is scattered.
- Water properties and temperature: Water’s complex refractive index—and thus its electromagnetic response—varies with frequency and temperature.
- Polarization and direction: Forward-scattered and backward-scattered fields need not be the same. Drop shape can also make the response differ between polarizations.
- The rain along the path: A real signal encounters a population of drops with a range of sizes and spacing, not one isolated, idealized drop.
How rain affects radar and radio links
Weather radar uses backscatter
A weather radar sends out radio waves and listens for energy scattered back from precipitation. The returning signal is useful because it carries information about where precipitation is present. The same physical interaction that returns energy to a radar is not limited to backscatter: scattering can also redirect energy away from a communications path.

Rain can attenuate and alter a signal
As a radio wave travels through rain, energy scattered out of the path contributes to attenuation. Rain can also change a signal’s phase or polarization. The magnitude depends on the path and the conditions along it, so a result for one frequency, drop model, or rainfall situation should not be treated as a universal rule.

For example, Odedina and Afullo’s 2010 study compared horizontally polarized signal measurements made over one year on a 6.73 km path at 19.5 GHz in Durban, South Africa, with theoretical rain-attenuation models. That is a specific measurement setup, not a general performance figure for radio links everywhere. Their calculations used spherical drops, water properties set at 20°C (293 K), and frequencies up to about 35 GHz; those are conditions and limits of that paper’s model, not boundaries that apply to all rain or all scattering analyses. Why drop shape and polarization matter
Realistic drop-shape assumptions can change predictions, especially when comparing polarization. In a 1973 calculation using oblate spheroidal drops, Tomohiro Oguchi considered forward and backward scattering at 19.3 and 34.8 GHz. In that model, differences in phase rotation between two polarizations at 19.3 GHz grew substantially with rain rate, while the corresponding difference at 34.8 GHz remained within a small range. These results are specific to those frequencies and the paper’s model; they are not a rule that applies to every rain event. Read Oguchi’s 1973 paper.
Rain scatter can also interfere with radio systems
Scattering can be a nuisance as well as a sensing tool. K. Bullington’s 1975 study describes rain scatter as foreground reflections that can spoil an off-beam antenna pattern. It also notes that changing rainfall along a radio path creates uncertainty. In other words, energy scattered by rain may reach directions or receivers where it was not wanted. Read Bullington’s 1975 study.

A separate case: scattering from a raindrop splash
A falling drop in a radio beam is not the same physical setup as a drop striking a surface. The impact can create structures such as a splash crown, stalk, and ring wave that also scatter radio energy. L. B. Wetzel’s 1990 paper modeled parts of the splash as dielectric cylinders and treated the ring wave with a perturbation approximation. It reported that cross-section predictions agreed with laboratory measurements of individual splash-scattering events, while noting that experimental data were insufficient to test the proposed statistical model for natural rain. Those findings concern splash events, not ordinary atmospheric scattering from freely falling drops. Read Wetzel’s 1990 paper.
What the antenna analogy gets right—and what it does not
The analogy is useful if it means that an incoming electromagnetic field makes water respond and that the drop reradiates some energy. It becomes misleading if it suggests that a raindrop behaves like a designed antenna with a known efficiency or a single resonant frequency. Scattering depends on frequency, water properties, drop size and shape, polarization, observation direction, and the distribution of drops. The more precise way to describe the effect is dielectric scattering.
