That is only one possible cause: emulator app files, updates, saves, and cache may also use space. The exact behavior depends on the game format and the specific emulator.
Why storage can increase after installation
“Installed” may refer to data created inside the emulator, not a replacement for the file you downloaded. If the original game image or package remains in Downloads while the emulator stores another copy or installs game data in its own virtual storage, both occupy device space.

RPCS3 is a documented example, not a guarantee of how every Android PS3 emulator works. Its source code handles ISO archives as disc content and looks up installed title data in an emulated HDD game directory. It describes installed titles and disc games with updates as typically using that directory, while disc games without updates are usually read from the disc path. See RPCS3’s System.cpp source for those implementation details.
That distinction means a larger storage total does not prove that every emulator duplicates every game. Whether source files remain, whether a format is installed, and where updates are stored all depend on the app’s workflow.

Which files may be using the space?
Check these categories separately; Android’s storage screens and an emulator’s file browser may label them differently.
- Original game files: the ISO, PKG, or extracted dump you copied or downloaded.
- Installed game data: files the emulator creates or stores in its virtual HDD or game-data location.
- Updates and DLC: additional content that may be stored separately from the base game.
- Emulator app files: the app itself and its installed components. Android Developers notes that compressed shared libraries can take up more installed space because they are extracted from the APK and copied onto disk (Android Developers: Support 16 KB page sizes).
- Cache, saves, and temporary data: separate emulator-managed files. RPCS3 source initializes virtual HDD and cache paths, but that does not establish a typical cache size for Android users.
The Android app-library behavior is a possible contribution to the app’s footprint; it does not by itself explain a particular game’s increased data size.

How to identify what grew
- Check Android app storage. Open the device’s Settings and look for the emulator under Apps or Storage. Note the app size and any separate user-data or cache figures your Android version shows.
- Inspect the source-file location. Check Downloads or the folder where you keep game files for the original ISO, PKG, or extracted dump. Compare what remains there with the emulator’s game-data location.
- Inspect emulator-managed storage. Use the emulator’s own file browser or documented storage path, if available, to look for installed game data, updates, saves, and cache. Do not assume another emulator uses RPCS3’s paths.
- Compare the categories, not just one total. A rise may reflect installed data alongside a retained source file, app files, or additional data. There is no defensible general gigabyte increase that applies across PS3 games on Android.
Can you delete the ISO or PKG after installation?
There is no universal safe-deletion rule. An emulator may read a disc image from its original location rather than install a full replacement, or it may need source files for its particular workflow. Before deleting an ISO, PKG, or extracted folder, check the instructions for the exact emulator build and confirm where it stores installed data. If you choose to remove a source file, verify that the game still launches afterward; keep a backup if you may need to restore it.

Do ISO, PKG, folder, or CHD formats save space?
These formats are not interchangeable storage options in every emulator. RPCS3’s official guide search result says legally owned disc dumps can be added in folder or ISO format (RPCS3 Quickstart Guide), but that does not establish support or storage behavior for an Android port. The questions about ISO, PKG, folder, and CHD in an RPCS3-Android issue are questions, not confirmation that a particular Android build supports those formats (RPCS3-Android issue #48).
In particular, the available sources do not verify CHD support in the Android emulator implied by the question. Check that emulator’s current documentation before converting files or deleting the originals. Without app-specific documentation or testing, it is not possible to rank these formats by the space they will use after installation.
