For more realistic AI room renders, write a compact visual brief: identify the room and its purpose, describe the layout and key objects, specify materials and lighting, then set the camera view and the details that must stay fixed. Concrete directions give an image generator clearer choices than a request for “a realistic room” or a pile of quality buzzwords.
What to include in an AI room prompt
Use this as a flexible checklist, not a guaranteed formula. Include the decisions that matter to your image; leave out details that do not help define it.

- Room and purpose: Say what the space is and how it is used, such as a lived-in family living room or a compact rental kitchen.
- Layout and objects: Describe the known room geometry and the few important items, using spatial relationships such as left and right, foreground and background, or near and far.
- Materials and texture: Name visible finishes—matte plaster, oak grain, brushed metal, nubby linen—rather than relying on words such as “luxury” or “realistic.” These are descriptive examples, not guaranteed output qualities.
- Lighting: Identify the source, direction, and quality. “Soft overcast daylight entering from the window on the left” is more specific than “beautiful lighting.”
- Camera and framing: Choose a viewpoint, such as eye-level or elevated, and a framing, such as wide or tight. Say whether the image should read as architectural photography, a perspective render, or another medium.
- Style and mood: Choose a coherent visual treatment and palette instead of combining adjectives that pull in different directions.
- Constraints: State what must stay in place and what should not appear. Use the generator’s reference or editing controls when exact structure matters.
This approach reflects the dimensions emphasized by OpenAI Academy, Midjourney’s Prompt Basics, and Adobe Firefly’s prompt guidance: subject, setting, style, composition, lighting, framing, and material detail.

Example: a more specific living-room prompt
Create a realistic editorial image of a small, lived-in living room. Keep the window on the back wall and the sofa along the right wall, with a low oak coffee table centered on a textured wool rug. Show matte warm-white plaster, visible oak grain, and soft overcast daylight entering from the window on the left; use eye-level, wide interior-photography framing, natural proportions, and a muted earth-tone palette. Keep the room layout and furniture positions unchanged; do not add text or logos.

- Encourages creative practice and helps build a personal collection of art
This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested recipe or a guarantee that a model will reproduce exact geometry. If the structure is important, begin with a relevant reference image or an editing/reference control, then inspect the generated result.
Use reference images for layout or style
Where image input is supported, references can communicate visual information more directly than prose. Label each image’s role clearly: for example, “Image 1 is the room layout; preserve the window and furniture positions. Image 2 is a style and material reference; use its warm palette and wood finish.” Keep the reference set small and describe how the images relate.

Reference behavior varies by product. OpenAI advises explaining the role and spatial relationship of multiple images. Midjourney distinguishes image prompts from its Editor: image prompts guide a new image rather than copy a reference exactly, while the Editor is intended for more precise changes. Do not treat a reference as a guarantee of exact layout or appearance. See OpenAI’s image-generation guidance and Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation.
Refine the image one change at a time
After the first generation, identify the largest mismatch and request one narrow correction. For example: “Keep the composition and furniture positions; make the daylight softer.” Make a separate request for a material or color adjustment. When editing, state both what should change and what should remain fixed. OpenAI recommends direct feedback and small, targeted revisions in its image-generation guidance.

Troubleshoot common room-render problems
- The room looks like a showroom or generic CGI: Add a few signs of ordinary use and describe specific materials. Avoid introducing many decorative details in the same revision.
- Materials look flat or plastic: Describe the finish and texture plainly, then specify how light falls across the surface. This applies vendor guidance on material detail and lighting; it is not a guaranteed correction.
- Perspective looks distorted: Reduce competing camera cues and choose one viewpoint and framing. Check the result rather than assuming “wide-angle” will preserve realistic proportions.
- The layout drifts: Name the fixed elements explicitly, add a layout reference if the tool supports one, and request a targeted edit. Midjourney describes image prompts as guidance for a new image, not exact copying.
- An edit changes too much: Repeat the important invariant, such as “keep the same composition and layout,” and ask for only one change per revision.
Adjust the prompt to the image generator
| Tool | What its official guidance says | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT image generation | OpenAI Academy says one to three clear sentences are usually effective. It emphasizes concrete details, explicit constraints, small revisions, and explaining the role of reference images. OpenAI Academy | Keep the brief concise, but include the layout, material, lighting, and framing decisions that matter. |
| Midjourney | Prompt Basics recommends short, clear phrasing and lists subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition as useful dimensions. Its Image Prompts guidance says references guide a new image rather than copy one exactly. Prompt Basics · Image Prompts | Give clear visual direction without assuming a reference will lock the geometry. Check Midjourney’s current documentation before using numeric image-weight parameters, since documented values depend on version and can change. |
| Adobe Firefly | Adobe’s tutorial emphasizes reference images, framing, lighting, camera settings, and material detail. Its examples include building a scene around a product photo and maintaining a character; they are adjacent guidance, not room-render performance evidence. Adobe Help Center | Use the visual controls that match the task, but do not assume examples outside room rendering prove how well a tool will render a room. |
There is no established room-render-specific statistic or measured success rate in these official sources. They also do not establish which generator produces the “most realistic” room. To compare tools, use the same brief and inputs, then assess layout adherence, material rendering, lighting and perspective, reference controls, and whether localized edits leave other parts intact.
