Why Protein Balance Matters for Health: A 2026 Guide

Protein supports the body, but more is not automatically better. WHO’s guidance puts it in the context of total energy, food variety and individual needs.

Protein is essential, but a healthy diet is not a high-protein diet by default. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes healthy eating through adequacy, balance, moderation and diversity: protein needs to fit alongside carbohydrates, fats, total energy and a varied range of foods. For adults, WHO says protein providing 10–15% of daily energy is generally sufficient. Its example of about 50–75 grams per day assumes a healthy-weight person eating around 2,000 calories; it is not a personal target for everyone.

Why does protein matter?

Protein supplies building blocks for the body’s structural components, including muscle, and functional molecules such as hormones and enzymes. It is therefore necessary, but it is one part of nutrition rather than a stand-alone measure of diet quality.

WHO says a healthy diet should provide enough nutrients without exceeding needs, balance energy intake with energy use, moderate less healthy components and include diverse foods. As WHO puts it, “Healthy diets come in many forms, but the four core principles of adequacy, balance, moderation and diversity should be the foundation of any healthy diet.” WHO, Healthy diet fact sheet (26 January 2026)

How much protein do I need a day?

WHO’s 2026 guidance says protein should generally provide 10–15% of total daily energy for adults. To make that percentage easier to picture, WHO gives an illustrative amount of approximately 50–75 grams per day for a person of healthy body weight consuming about 2,000 calories daily. The calorie intake and healthy-weight assumption matter: the figure is an example, not a universal prescription or an individualized assessment.

Needs and suitable food choices vary with factors such as age, activity, lifestyle, culture, food availability and dietary customs. Recommendations can also vary by age and sex; the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements’ nutrient recommendations and databases points readers to USDA FoodData Central for food nutrient information. Food composition data can help compare foods, but it cannot determine an individual’s medical needs.

What does a balanced protein diet look like?

Think in terms of the overall pattern, not a single “best” food or a protein tally alone. WHO identifies balance among the energy-providing macronutrients—protein, carbohydrates and fat—and variety across foods as parts of healthy eating. In WHO/FAO’s 2024 publication materials, adult macronutrient distribution ranges are 45–75% of daily energy from carbohydrates and 15–30% from fat; these are population-level ranges, not a meal plan for an individual. WHO and FAO, What are healthy diets? Joint statement (24 October 2024)

A practical example is a meal built around lentils, chickpeas or beans with vegetables and whole grains. Other meals may include plant or animal protein sources that suit personal preferences and access. This is an illustration of variety, not a prescribed menu.

Can you get enough protein from plant foods?

Yes. Protein can come from plant and animal foods. WHO names pulses—including lentils, chickpeas, beans and dried peas—as protein sources and encourages varied diets that include foods such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits. WHO also says that shifting toward more plant-based protein may benefit many adults, particularly when it replaces red meat. That is a population-level recommendation, not a guarantee of an outcome for any particular person. WHO, Healthy diet fact sheet

The point is not that every animal food must be avoided or that one plant food is a complete solution. A useful approach is to choose a varied pattern that fits your circumstances and to consider the whole food and the rest of the diet.

Do athletes need more protein?

Some people may consume a greater share of energy from protein. WHO notes this can apply to adolescents and to people building or maintaining substantial muscle, including athletes and bodybuilders. That observation does not set one target for all athletes: needs depend on the person and their circumstances. The cited WHO guidance does not say that supplements are necessary or that simply increasing protein guarantees muscle gain.

Is too much protein bad for your kidneys?

WHO cautions that excessive protein intake can place a metabolic burden on the body, particularly the kidneys. Its fact sheet does not define a single universal threshold for “excessive,” so the general adult range should not be turned into a precise upper limit. People with kidney disease or another diagnosis that affects diet should get individualized guidance from a qualified clinician or registered dietitian rather than applying a general population figure.

When should you seek individualized advice?

A general guide cannot set a personal target for everyone. Consult a qualified clinician or registered dietitian if you have kidney disease, are pregnant, have a medical diagnosis affecting nutrition, or otherwise need a clinical diet plan. They can account for your circumstances in a way that population-level guidance cannot.
