Professional gamers have not been shown to universally prefer LCD over OLED. LCD and TN displays became familiar fixtures in esports, and event partnerships still put them on tournament stages; meanwhile, OLED is entering major competitions with high-refresh-rate models. The more accurate explanation is a mix of established setups, compact screen sizes and player familiarity—not proof that LCD is categorically faster or better.
Do professional gamers actually prefer LCD?
There is no independent statistic here establishing what share of professional players use LCD versus OLED, or proving that one panel type improves competitive results. Tournament announcements show that both technologies are in use, but an event’s selected monitor is not a survey of every player’s preference.

For example, ZOWIE announced that its XL2586X+ Fast TN monitor would be the official display for multiple Intel Extreme Masters competitions from 2025 through 2027. ASUS, by contrast, announced that its 24.5-inch PG259QWS Ace OLED would be the official monitor for the PGL CS2 Major Singapore, scheduled for November 24 to December 13, 2026. ASUS describes it as the first Counter-Strike Major to use OLED on the main stage. The event is still upcoming as of October 2026. (ZOWIE’s IEM announcement; ASUS’s PGL announcement.)
Why LCD and TN became familiar in esports
Established tournament setups
When events repeatedly supply a particular class of display, players can practice on known equipment and retain settings and habits that work for them. ZOWIE’s IEM partnership is a current example of a major event series specifying a Fast TN model. Such partnerships help explain why LCD remains visible in esports, but they do not establish that every player chose it independently or that it is objectively superior.

The 24-inch-class format
Compact screens are a recurring esports convention. ASUS says many competitors favor the 24-inch class because the full play area stays in view without turning the head; LG Display likewise describes 24-inch-class monitors as standard in esports. These are manufacturers’ descriptions, not results from an independently measured player survey. OLED products are also adopting the format: ASUS’s PGL-selected model is 24.5 inches, and Sony’s INZONE M10S offers a 24.5-inch mode. (ASUS on 24.5-inch ROG monitors; LG Display; Sony’s INZONE announcement.)
Familiar presentation and settings
Players may value a display mode they already know as much as the panel technology itself. Sony’s OLED INZONE M10S includes an FPS Pro mode intended to simulate characteristics of TN LCD monitors typically used in pro tournaments. That feature indicates that familiar image presentation is a product-design consideration; it is not evidence that TN is inherently better for aiming or reaction time.

Is LCD faster than OLED?
“Faster” can mean several different things: a higher refresh rate, quicker pixel transitions, clearer motion, or lower total input latency. A single response-time figure does not answer all of those questions, and the available manufacturer announcements do not provide an independent, controlled LCD-versus-OLED comparison.

These figures are not a like-for-like latency test. Actual competitive usefulness depends on the specific display, game, graphics system, settings and player. A monitor’s maximum refresh rate also does not guarantee that a player’s system will deliver matching frame rates.

OLED is no longer limited to slower-refresh gaming displays. ASUS’s announced 24.5-inch models span 360Hz to 720Hz, and LG Display announced mass production of a 24.5-inch 720Hz OLED panel in September 2026. Those are manufacturer statements and specifications, not independent head-to-head performance results. ASUS’s selection for the upcoming PGL CS2 Major is a concrete sign of tournament adoption, while ZOWIE’s IEM partnership shows LCD/TN remains present at major events.

OLED makers also address upkeep and familiarity. ASUS lists OLED Care Pro, a proximity sensor and a three-year burn-in warranty for the PG259QWS Ace. These are product features and warranty terms; they do not quantify real-world failure rates or prove that burn-in caused LCD’s historical presence. Sony’s TN-emulating FPS Pro mode is another example of an OLED product accommodating established esports preferences.

For a player choosing a screen, compare the complete setup rather than assuming one panel type wins by default:
Quick Recap
- Refresh rate: Check the exact model’s published rate and whether your games and system can supply frame rates that make it useful.
- Motion and latency: Distinguish pixel response specifications from total input latency and motion clarity; seek comparable testing rather than treating a vendor response-time number as the whole result.
- Size and resolution: Consider whether a compact 24.5-inch-class view fits your distance, game and established setup.
- Image modes: Look for the presentation and controls you actually use. Sony’s FPS Pro mode shows that some OLED monitors offer a TN-like option.
- Event requirements: If you compete in organized events, check the rules and equipment standard for the specific competition instead of assuming the professional scene uses one universal monitor.
- OLED care and warranty: Review the exact manufacturer’s protections and terms if choosing OLED; advertised care features are not a substitute for a quantified reliability comparison.
