Microsoft documents Windows Backup pin restoration for new-device setup or Windows reinstallation—not as a general repair for pins that go missing during ordinary use.
Check whether Start’s view or section changed
Windows 11 Start has Pinned, All, and Recommended sections. A change in the visible section or its remembered view can make a pin seem to have vanished. Microsoft says Pinned and Recommended can collapse if you remove every pin or turn off all Recommended providers; a collapsed section is not evidence that an app was uninstalled. - Open Start and inspect the Pinned and All sections. Check whether the missing app is visible in All.
- If the Pinned or Recommended section is collapsed, expand it and check its contents.
- If you find the app in All or through Start search, right-click it and select Pin to Start.
Microsoft documents the same Start context-menu flow for pinning and the Unpin from Start command for removing a pin.

A Start pin is a way to reach an app, not proof that the app itself remains installed. Search for the app or look in All. If it is absent there too, check whether it is installed and available before treating the problem as a missing shortcut or trying to repair Start.

This distinction matters especially on managed devices: Microsoft says a configured pin for an app that is not installed on the target device may not appear until the app is installed. A missing pin alone does not establish that the app’s files or user data were deleted. See Microsoft Learn’s managed Start layout documentation.
Check whether work or school policy controls Start
On a work or school device, an administrator may configure a full or partial Start layout. Depending on the policy, users may be unable to change specified pins, or a configured layout may be reapplied when the user signs in. That can make a pin change seem not to stick or make pins appear to revert.

Ask your IT administrator whether the device’s Start layout is managed before trying to work around the behavior. Microsoft Learn documents managed layouts in Customize the Start layout for managed Windows devices and pin policy in Start policy settings. The policy documentation identifies Configure Start Pins Group Policy availability beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2 and KB5062660. Microsoft also identifies an apply-once option for managed layouts on Windows 11 version 24H2 with KB5062660; whether that option is in use is an administrator-side configuration question.

Use Windows Backup only after a new setup or reinstall
If the missing pins followed setup of a new PC or reinstallation of Windows, Windows Backup may be relevant. Microsoft says app pins can be restored during setup when you sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the backup. The next step depends on the app:

- Microsoft Store apps: select the app pins during setup to restore them.
- Apps outside the Store: Windows directs you to a web installer.

Microsoft’s Start guidance explains sections and pin controls, while its Learn documentation describes behavior on managed devices and its Backup guidance covers restoration during setup. Those sources do not identify one universal cause or repair for a missing pin on an unmanaged PC that is already configured. Without evidence of a specific cause, do not assume a Windows update, corrupted component, or damaged profile is responsible.

Use the symptom to choose the next check: a collapsed section points to Start’s view; an app missing from both Pinned and All calls for an installation check; pins that revert on a work or school device call for an administrator; and a problem immediately after setup or reinstallation may call for Windows Backup restoration.
