To customize Windows 11 Start, pin the apps and folders you use most, arrange them in the Pinned area, choose an All apps view, and decide which items appear in Recommended. If you want to limit personalization based on apps you launch, change that separately in Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers.
Organize the Pinned area
Open Start with the Start button or the Windows key. To add an app, search for it, right-click its result, and select Pin to Start. To pin a folder, right-click it in File Explorer and choose Pin to Start. Microsoft Edge also supports pinning websites to Start. To remove an item, right-click its pin and select Unpin from Start. Reorder pins and make folders
Drag a pin to move it to another position. To group related apps, drag one pin onto another to create a folder. Drag items into or out of the folder to change its contents, and rename the folder if you want.
Choose how to browse All apps
In the All apps section, Windows offers Category, Grid, and List views. Category groups apps, Grid supports visual scanning, and List presents a straightforward list. Choose the view that fits how you find apps; Microsoft does not identify one as best for everyone. The Pinned and All sections remember the last view used, so select your preferred view and expand the section you want to see.

Set up Recommended
Recommended can show recently added and frequently used apps, along with recently opened files. You can unpin individual items or adjust the Recommended providers in Start settings. Microsoft says the sections collapse when all items are unpinned or all providers are disabled.
Keep the providers enabled if recent items are useful context. If you prefer a quieter Start menu, turn off the providers you do not want and unpin displayed items. This controls what appears in Recommended; it is different from the app-launch personalization setting below.

Add shortcuts beside the power button
Start settings include a Folders page. Use it to turn on shortcuts such as Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Network, and Personal folder, which appear beside the power button. These shortcuts provide direct access without taking up space among your pinned apps.
Control personalization based on apps you launch
Windows has a separate control for app-launch-based personalization. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and change the app-launch tracking setting. Microsoft explains that Windows can use the apps you launch to personalize Start and search results. This setting concerns personalization; it does not replace pinning, unpinning, or choosing which Recommended providers are shown. Read Microsoft’s privacy guidance for Recommendations & offers.

Navigate Start with the keyboard
Press the Windows key to open Start. Press Tab to move among Pinned, All apps, and Recommended, use the arrow keys to navigate, and press Enter to activate an item. Typing a letter can jump to a pinned app that begins with that letter. Microsoft documents this path in its screen-reader navigation guide; focus order may differ across devices or Windows builds.

- Drag related pins together to create folders and place your most-used pins where they are easy to reach.
- Choose Category, Grid, or List in All apps according to how you prefer to browse.

- Review Recommended providers and items, keeping only the recent or frequently used content you want to see.
