But it is a specialized tool, not an automatic image-quality upgrade: small phone sensors already keep much of a scene in focus, and a fixed wide aperture can be more useful when light is scarce.
What does variable aperture actually do on a phone?
An aperture is the opening in a lens that lets light reach the image sensor. A lower f-number means a wider opening; a higher f-number means a narrower one. Opening the aperture wider lets in more light and tends to make the depth of field shallower. Narrowing it reduces incoming light but can keep more of a scene at different distances acceptably sharp.

The effect depends on the whole camera, including sensor size, focal length and subject distance. Xiaomi’s support article on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra explains that a larger aperture gathers more light and narrows depth of field, which can separate a subject from its background; it describes this blur as a normal optical effect. Why did most phones use a fixed aperture?
Phone cameras generally have small sensors and short focal lengths. Those characteristics often give them broad depth of field even with the aperture wide open, so a mechanical iris may add little in many everyday scenes. A fixed wide aperture also has a practical advantage: it admits more light, which can help the camera use a faster shutter speed or lower ISO sensitivity, especially in dim conditions.

Stopping down can be useful when a scene calls for more depth of field or when the photographer wants direct exposure control. The tradeoff is that less light reaches the sensor. How much the control helps depends on the particular lens, sensor, subject distance and image processing; aperture range alone does not establish how good a phone’s photos will be.
Which phones have used physical variable aperture?
The idea is not new, and implementations have varied. Digital Camera World’s device timeline identifies the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ as early dual-aperture examples from 2018, followed by the Huawei Mate 50 Pro in 2022 and Xiaomi 14 Pro, introduced in late 2023.

The examples do not establish that every model is available in every country, or that this is a complete list. The reported iPhone details should be checked against current official specifications for the relevant market. The cited coverage does not provide controlled, head-to-head image tests, so these figures should not be used to rank the phones.
Is a software aperture the same as a physical iris?
No. A physical iris changes the lens opening before light reaches the sensor. A software feature can imitate the appearance of shallow or deep depth of field in the processed image, but it does not mechanically change that opening.

Samsung describes the Galaxy S25 series’ Expert RAW Virtual Aperture as an AI/software feature that lets users choose deep or shallow depth-of-field effects. Samsung developer Pyojae Kim said the interface “recreates the effect of changing the aperture of a lens on a DSLR camera.” Samsung also reported that 200,000 photos were used to build the feature’s training database; that is a development figure, not a measure of user results or general camera performance. Software blur offers a way to adjust the rendered look, while an iris changes the light entering the camera. Neither method can be declared better in every image without comparative evidence.

What should you check when comparing phone cameras?
Treat variable aperture as one part of an imaging system rather than a standalone quality score. When comparing two phones, check:
- Whether the aperture is a physical iris or a software-generated effect.
- The minimum and maximum f-numbers, and whether the settings are stepped or continuous.
- Sensor size and lens or focal-length context, which shape the practical depth-of-field effect.
- Whether aperture control is automatic or manual, and whether it applies to still photos, video or both.
- Low-light performance, shutter behavior, focus consistency and image processing.
- Independent sample photos or controlled tests, plus the exact regional model and availability.
Huawei’s support page offers a manufacturer-specific example of implementation behavior: it says listed variable-aperture phones leave the mechanism in an unpowered free state when the camera is off to reduce camera power use and avoid heat. It also says movement or vibration can leave the aperture at different positions and describes that as normal.
