Why People Avoid AI Chatbots and Question Social Media’s Harms

Lack of interest leads reasons U.S. chatbot non-users give for staying away, while privacy, accuracy and wider social concerns also shape skepticism. Social-media attitudes are mixed, and the evidence does not establish a single anti-tech movement.

People who avoid AI chatbots most often say they are uninterested, but privacy and accuracy concerns also matter. Criticism of social media, meanwhile, centers on perceived harms such as loneliness, surveillance and misinformation, alongside recognition that these platforms can help people connect and organize. The evidence describes overlapping attitudes—not one organized “anti-tech movement,” or proof that users are broadly quitting social media.

Why do some people avoid AI chatbots?

The clearest recent evidence comes from a Pew Research Center survey of 5,119 U.S. adults conducted February 17–23, 2026. Its questions about reasons for non-use were asked only of people who said they never use AI chatbots. The results therefore describe chatbot non-users, not all U.S. adults.

Among those non-users, lack of interest was the most common reason. Pew reported that six in ten named it as a major factor; including people who called it a minor factor, the share was 83%. Privacy and accuracy concerns were also common, but the figures should not be read as evidence that every non-user is actively opposed to AI.

Not using AI can be a preference, not a protest

The leading reason was simply lack of interest. In the UK, a separate Department for Science, Innovation and Technology survey found that 44% of generative-AI non-users in its online sample preferred to do things without AI. That suggests some people see no need to add these tools to their routines; it does not establish a shared political position or explain every person’s choice.

Privacy and accuracy are distinct concerns

Privacy concerns are about what happens to personal information when a person uses a chatbot. Accuracy concerns are about whether its answers can be trusted. Those are different risks: a person might be comfortable sharing a prompt but doubt the answer, or trust an answer while preferring not to provide personal information.

The UK survey reported that, among generative-AI non-users in its online sample, 33% worried about privacy or security and 31% worried the technology might be inaccurate. Another 32% said they did not know enough to use it. The report says these results represent non-users in the online sample; the question was not included in the paper questionnaire. The UK and U.S. figures come from different surveys and populations and should not be combined as if they were directly comparable.

What broader worries shape attitudes toward AI?

Some concerns extend beyond an individual’s decision to use a chatbot. In Pew’s February 2026 U.S. survey, 71% of adults thought greater AI use would make their personal information less secure, and about two-thirds thought AI was advancing too quickly. In the same survey, 59% said they had little or no confidence in U.S. companies to develop and use AI responsibly.

These are public attitudes, not measures of how many people refuse AI tools. They help explain why personal adoption can coexist with caution about the direction of the technology or the institutions developing it. Pew also found that about half of U.S. adults reported using AI chatbots in 2026: skepticism has not amounted to a uniform rejection.

Non-use may persist, but it is not necessarily permanent

Among U.S. adults who said they never used chatbots, 67% said they were not too or not at all likely to use one in the following 12 months; 5% said they were extremely or very likely. These answers indicate low stated near-term interest among non-users at the time of the survey, not a permanent refusal.

Why do people criticize social media?

Social-media criticism often focuses on what platforms may do to people’s relationships, privacy and information environment. A 2024 Abundance Institute report records concern about harm to children, loneliness, surveillance, hate and misinformation. These are reported attitudes, not proof that every user experiences those harms or has stopped using social media.

The same report also records perceived benefits: respondents recognized social media’s potential to help people stay connected and support activism. The picture is therefore mixed rather than a simple division between people who reject technology and people who embrace it.

Source: Abundance Institute, “Artificial Intelligence, Social Media, and the Politics of Anti-Technology” (2024). The report’s available findings do not establish enough survey-method or field-date detail to treat its results as representative of all social-media users or the general public.

Concern about a platform is not the same as quitting it

People may object to a platform’s effects while still valuing its connections or using it for particular purposes. The evidence here documents attitudes but does not establish how many people have quit social media, reduced their use or why any specific person left. It also does not support a direct comparison between current AI non-use rates and social-media quitting.

Is there one anti-tech movement?

“Anti-tech movement” is a useful frame for discussing shared skepticism, but the available evidence does not establish a single organization, leadership, membership or common platform. AI non-use surveys identify a range of reasons—including indifference, privacy, accuracy and unfamiliarity—while social-media findings capture both criticism and perceived benefits. Similar concerns do not by themselves demonstrate coordinated action.

The most careful conclusion is that some people are opting out of particular tools or questioning how technology is developed and used. That is not the same as rejecting all technology, and the evidence does not show that social-media critics and AI non-users form one constituency.
