5 Panasonic Lumix Compacts, Matched to How You Shoot

The best Lumix compact depends on whether you value pocketable 30x reach, a larger sensor, a bright short zoom, or extreme range in a bridge-camera body.

The Panasonic LUMIX ZS99 is the most straightforward pick for a pocketable travel zoom: it pairs a 30x, 24–720mm-equivalent lens with a 322g listed weight. Choose the ZS200D instead if a 1-inch sensor matters more than maximum reach, the LX100 II for a brighter but much shorter zoom, or the FZ80D when extreme reach matters more than pocket size. These are specification-based recommendations, not hands-on performance rankings.

Which Lumix compact fits your priorities?

LUMIX ZS80D (DC-ZS80D) 1/2.3-inch; sensor resolution not stated on the cited specifications page 30x optical zoom; 24–720mm equivalent; electronic viewfinder About 328g with battery and card 30x travel zoom when a viewfinder is wanted
LUMIX ZS200D (DC-ZS200D) 1-inch; 20.1 effective megapixels 15x optical zoom; about 24–360mm equivalent in 3:2 aspect ratio; viewfinder not stated on the cited specifications page About 340g with battery and card Travel range with a larger sensor format
LUMIX LX100 II (DC-LX100M2) Four Thirds; 17 effective megapixels 3.1x zoom; 24–75mm equivalent; maximum aperture F1.7 wide and F2.8 tele; viewfinder availability not stated here Not stated in the cited source Shorter-range enthusiast photography with a bright lens
LUMIX FZ80D Sensor format and resolution not stated in the cited source 60x optical zoom; 20–1200mm equivalent; viewfinder availability not stated here 640g with battery and card Very long reach when a bridge-camera body is acceptable

Specifications are from Panasonic’s product and specification pages: ZS99 Canada product page, ZS99 specifications, ZS200D specifications, ZS80D specifications, LX100 II specifications, and FZ80D Canada product page. A detail marked “not stated” is not established by the cited page; it does not mean the camera lacks that feature.

Best pocket travel zoom: Panasonic LUMIX ZS99

The ZS99 is the clearest match for a small camera that needs to cover a broad range of travel scenes. Panasonic lists a 1/2.3-inch MOS sensor, about 20.3 effective megapixels, and a 30x optical zoom spanning 24–720mm equivalent. Its Canada product listing gives a 322g weight with battery and SD card, plus 4K video and photo, a tilting monitor, and USB-C charging. See Panasonic’s ZS99 product page and full specifications.

The tradeoff is sensor size: this is a small-sensor zoom compact, not the larger-sensor option in this group. Its reach makes it versatile for framing distant subjects, but zoom range by itself does not establish image quality.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Best 30x zoom with a viewfinder: Panasonic LUMIX ZS80D

The ZS80D offers the same broad 24–720mm-equivalent coverage and 30x optical zoom as the ZS99, while Panasonic’s specifications explicitly list an electronic viewfinder. It uses a 1/2.3-inch sensor and weighs approximately 328g with battery and card. That combination makes it worth considering if composing through a viewfinder is a priority and the long zoom is more important than moving to a larger sensor. Panasonic’s ZS80D specifications provide the listed details.

Best larger-sensor travel zoom: Panasonic LUMIX ZS200D

The ZS200D gives up half the zoom ratio of the 30x models but pairs a 1-inch sensor with 20.1 effective megapixels and a 15x lens. Panasonic lists its coverage at approximately 24–360mm equivalent in 3:2 aspect ratio, and its weight at about 340g with battery and card. It is the balanced choice here for someone who wants substantial travel framing flexibility without choosing a 1/2.3-inch-sensor model. The larger sensor format is a specification distinction, not a guarantee of better results in every scene. See Panasonic’s ZS200D specifications.

Best bright-lens enthusiast compact: Panasonic LUMIX LX100 II

The LX100 II takes a different approach from the travel zooms: it uses a Four Thirds sensor and a 24–75mm-equivalent 3.1x zoom, with maximum apertures of F1.7 at wide angle and F2.8 at telephoto. That shorter range is a poor fit if you expect to photograph distant subjects from far away, but it favors a brighter lens over extreme zoom reach. Panasonic lists 17 effective megapixels. The specifications do not establish a comparative image-quality winner; conditions and how the camera is used still matter. Details are on Panasonic’s LX100 II page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best extreme zoom if size is acceptable: Panasonic LUMIX FZ80D

The FZ80D is Panasonic’s bridge-camera option in this shortlist, rather than a pocket compact. Its 60x optical zoom covers 20–1200mm equivalent, and Panasonic Canada lists its weight as 640g with battery and card. That reach is the reason to choose it; its weight and bridge form factor are the cost. See Panasonic’s FZ80D product page.

How to choose between zoom, sensor size, and lens brightness

  • Prioritize reach: The ZS99 and ZS80D offer 24–720mm-equivalent coverage in pocket-compact listings; the FZ80D reaches 20–1200mm equivalent in a larger bridge body.
  • Prioritize sensor format: The ZS200D’s 1-inch sensor and LX100 II’s Four Thirds sensor are larger formats than the 1/2.3-inch sensors listed for the ZS99 and ZS80D. Sensor size alone does not predict every result.
  • Prioritize a bright maximum aperture: The LX100 II specifies F1.7–2.8 across its short zoom. The supplied specifications do not provide comparable aperture figures for every model, so they cannot support a complete aperture ranking.
  • Consider composition and carrying: The ZS80D has a specified electronic viewfinder. The ZS99 has a tilting monitor and is listed at 322g; the FZ80D’s stated 640g makes its bridge-camera form factor plain.

Zoom range, sensor format, and aperture describe different aspects of a camera and are not interchangeable image-quality scores. Actual results depend on the subject, light, camera settings, and how the camera is used.

Check price and availability before buying

Panasonic’s official product and specification pages establish the listed features and dimensions, not current street prices, stock, or a tested overall winner. Panasonic announced a U.S. launch price of $499.99 and mid-February 2025 availability for the ZS99; that is historical launch information, not a current price. See the 2025 Panasonic announcement. Check a current listing for your region and confirm whether the camera is new or used before ordering.
