Why Past Data Integrity Issues Disappear From Monitoring Dashboards

Old data integrity issues disappearing from a dashboard does not prove they were deleted. Identify the record type and check retention, raw data, audit history, and collection health before drawing conclusions.

A monitoring dashboard that no longer shows old data integrity issues does not, by itself, prove the records were deleted—or that the tool concealed them. The product, record type, retention policy, and incident evidence are unspecified here, so there is no basis to conclude that a particular tool lied. First establish whether the missing items are alerts, raw events, findings, or another record, then check whether they expired, stopped being collected, were filtered from the view, or were removed by a person or process.

What the missing issues do—and do not—prove

A blank or shorter history in a dashboard is evidence about what that view currently displays. It is not sufficient evidence that the underlying records were permanently deleted. Retention and visibility can vary by vendor, service, data type, plan, and configuration. Without identifying the platform and examining the affected records, settings, and logs, the cause and intent remain unknown.

Use precise language while investigating: “issues are no longer visible in this dashboard” is supportable from the display; “the tool deleted them” requires evidence that the underlying records are absent; “the vendor secretly deleted them” additionally requires evidence of who or what removed them and of intentional concealment.

How to find out where the history went

  1. Define what disappeared. Record the product and version or service, account or workspace, affected time range, and exact issue identifiers. Clarify whether “issues” means alerts, raw events, dashboard data, findings, or another record type.
  2. Compare views with stored evidence. Search the raw event store, if available, and check exports and backups. A missing dashboard item may reflect a view or filter rather than missing source data. Preserve screenshots or exports from the current view and any older copies you already have.
  3. Check retention for that record type. Review the platform’s documentation and the workspace’s retention settings for the relevant data type and plan. Do not assume that audit logs, alert history, and time-series samples share one retention period.
  4. Inspect change and access history. Where available, look for events showing changes to retention, filters, pipelines, dashboards, permissions, or data. Note the actor, timestamp, source, and outcome. Such logs can help explain a change, but only if the relevant feature was enabled and the events were retained.
  5. Check whether collection or processing failed. Review health, ingestion, and job-run records for the affected period. A failure to collect or process events can leave gaps without deleting data that had already been stored.
  6. Ask the vendor to account for the specific records. Provide the identifiers, time range, workspace, and evidence you collected; request an explanation of the applicable retention policy and any matching deletion, configuration, or collection events. Do not attribute intent until the evidence supports it.

What vendor documentation can—and cannot—show

Published retention terms are useful for setting expectations, not for proving what happened in a particular account. The examples below apply only to the named vendors and documented services.

Platform or service What its documentation says How to use that information
Microsoft online services audit logging Microsoft says most of the described audit-log data is retained for 90 days in Cosmos and 180 days in Kusto; exact periods are determined by service teams. Microsoft also says its tools for collecting and processing audit records in the described online services do not allow permanent or irreversible changes to original audit-record content or time ordering. Microsoft documentation These are Microsoft statements about the specified online-service audit controls and data, not a universal retention rule or proof about an unnamed monitoring tool.
LogicMonitor Its page, updated September 1, 2026, lists time-series sample retention of 3 months to 2+ years according to the service agreement. Alert history is listed as 30 days to 2 years depending on plan; the maximum applies only to cleared alerts. Audit-log retention is listed as matching the plan’s alert-history period. Audit and health records that can narrow the cause

If the environment is Microsoft Sentinel

Microsoft documents two relevant log categories for analytics rules. SentinelHealth records rule runs, success or failure, failure reasons, and event counts. SentinelAudit records rule changes, changed properties, before-and-after settings, actor identity, source IP, and the change time. The health feature must be turned on for the workspace before SentinelHealth records are collected, so an empty health history does not establish that no failure occurred. See Microsoft Sentinel health and audit documentation.

If the environment is Datadog

Datadog’s Audit Trail documentation describes events including index-retention changes, log-pipeline changes, and dashboard changes. If Audit Trail is available and configured in the environment, relevant events may help explain a change; the documentation is not evidence that any particular record was deleted. See Datadog Audit Trail documentation.

For other platforms

Look for equivalent records of configuration changes, access, deletion, ingestion, and job health. A useful audit trail connects what changed with who or what changed it, when, and the outcome. A government-hosted manager’s guide to monitoring data integrity recommends recording user activity, key transactions, and unusual conditions in exception and summary reports to support that kind of traceability: Managing data integrity: guidance for public-sector bodies.

What to preserve before changing settings

  • Capture the current dashboard view, filters, time range, and issue identifiers.
  • Export the relevant events, alerts, and audit records if the platform allows it; retain any existing backups and older exports.
  • Document the current retention, collection, and access settings before altering them.
  • Record who has authority to change retention or remove records, and preserve relevant change history.
  • Ask the vendor to preserve or identify records associated with the affected account and period while the cause is being investigated.

These steps help retain the evidence needed to distinguish expiration, collection gaps, view changes, and deletion. They do not establish which explanation applies to an unidentified incident.
