Particle effects can look different in PixiJS and Three.js even when they use the same image because the texture is only one part of the render. Blending, alpha handling, color-space conversion, point sizing, tone mapping, and the final canvas output all affect the result. The most reliable fix is to compare one particle at a time and align those parts of the rendering pipeline in order.
Why the same particle texture can look different
A particle’s appearance comes from the interaction of its artwork and the way the engine draws it. PixiJS v8’s ParticleContainer is a specialized rendering path with a defined set of supported particle properties. In Three.js, particles may be rendered as points with PointsMaterial or with another material, and material settings govern transparency, blending, and tone mapping.

Consequently, choosing settings with similar names in both libraries is not enough to guarantee the same pixels. A blend-mode label does not, by itself, establish that the same source and destination factors or alpha-channel treatment are being used. Three.js documents its material blending and transparency controls; custom blend factors require CustomBlending.

Compare the render in a controlled order
Use the same particle artwork, background, nominal size, and framing in both projects. Begin with one particle against a neutral background, not a cloud: this makes it easier to distinguish a texture or color mismatch from the way overlapping particles composite. Then check each stage below before changing several settings at once.

- Confirm the primitive and texture. Check that both renderers use the intended image, atlas frame, and particle representation. For PixiJS v8 ParticleContainer, confirm that the particles share a texture source and that the properties you need are supported by that version’s documented API.
- Match the compositing operation. Decide whether the effect should use normal alpha compositing or additive/lightening behavior. Set the appropriate blend mode in each library, but compare the actual blending behavior rather than assuming similarly named modes are equivalent. See the Three.js blend-mode documentation alongside the PixiJS and material references.
- Trace alpha through the whole chain. Inspect the source image’s alpha, texture upload behavior, particle or material opacity, blend factors, and final canvas compositing. Do not treat a texture setting and a material setting as interchangeable.
- Check color-space metadata and output transforms. For color textures in Three.js, verify the color-space annotation, then consider tone mapping, exposure, post-processing, and screen-output conversion.
- Check sizing and inheritance. If the particle shape is right but its apparent size or opacity is not, inspect perspective depth, point-size behavior, and parent/container alpha or tint before concluding that the source artwork is wrong.
Fix dark or bright fringes and unexpected opacity
Fringes around a particle often point to a mismatch between the alpha convention in the stored image and the convention expected during texture upload, shading, blending, or canvas compositing. Three.js exposes separate texture and material controls: Texture.premultiplyAlpha and a premultiplied-alpha property on Material. Check how the texture was created before toggling either setting.
There is an important exception for images created as an ImageBitmap: Three.js documents that Texture.premultiplyAlpha has no effect for that source type. Opacity can also be reduced before the image reaches Three.js’s material. In PixiJS, particle alpha and tint interact with inherited container values; the PixiJS development guide describes particle values combining with parent/container properties. Since that guide is a development document, check the stable API version used by your project before relying on its details.

Match color space, tone mapping, and output
Three.js uses Linear-sRGB for working calculations and converts screen output to sRGB. Color images such as PNG or JPEG particle maps should be annotated as sRGB; the color-management manual explains this workflow. Custom shaders and post-processing pipelines need to perform output conversion at the appropriate stage.

Opacity maps are different from color maps. Three.js documents alphaMap as grayscale opacity data, which is non-color data and should use NoColorSpace. With PointsMaterial, the regular map is color data, while alphaMap serves the opacity role.
If colors seem washed out, too dim, or excessively bright despite matching texture input, compare the entire output path. Three.js exposes renderer tone mapping and exposure, and materials have a toneMapped setting; changing these can affect apparent particle brightness. Check the renderer documentation together with the material and color-management settings.

Check point sizing and PixiJS version limits
Three.js PointsMaterial
PointsMaterial has its own sizing rules. Its point size can attenuate with depth under a perspective camera, and hardware limits constrain the available point size. Inspect size, sizeAttenuation, camera type and depth, and the hardware limit when a point appears unexpectedly small or large. Its documentation also describes how map and alphaMap are interpreted. If point primitives cannot reproduce the intended sprite behavior, a camera-facing mesh or custom shader is an alternative implementation to evaluate.
PixiJS v8 ParticleContainer
The v8.14.0 ParticleContainer API describes an optimized particle path with constrained features: particles share a texture source, and only selected properties update dynamically. General container features such as filters and masks are not generally available on particles in this container. If the effect depends on those features, use a rendering path that supports them rather than assuming ParticleContainer behaves like a general-purpose container. Check the versioned documentation for the project; examples for PixiJS v7 or earlier may not match v8.

Use this checklist before comparing final scenes
- Are both renderers using the same particle primitive, texture, and atlas frame?
- Do the alpha convention, opacity values, and canvas compositing agree from image upload through final output?
- Are the intended blend operation and factors actually equivalent?
- Is the Three.js color map marked as sRGB, while grayscale opacity data is treated as non-color data?
- Are point size, perspective attenuation, and hardware size limits accounted for?
- Do tone mapping, exposure, post-processing, and output conversion match?
- Are inherited PixiJS alpha/tint values or ParticleContainer feature constraints affecting the result?
