To save in the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, press +, use L or R to open the System screen, choose Save, then select a save file. To continue later, choose that file from the game’s load option. The button sequence and three-file detail are described in two game guides published at launch; Nintendo’s support pages cover Switch save storage and cloud backups rather than this game’s in-menu steps.
How to save your game
- While playing, press + to open the in-game menu.
- Press L or R until you reach the System screen.
- Select Save.
- Choose the intended save file from the three available files and confirm the save.
This route is described by two guides published September 19–20, 2019: IGN’s save guide and GameSpot’s guide. Nintendo’s support pages do not provide this game-specific button sequence.

How to resume from a save file
When you return to the game, use its load option and select the file you saved. The launch-era guides describe loading from the preceding menu. Choose the file you intend to continue; do not assume that suspending the software or closing it has created the deliberate save you wanted.
Is suspending the game the same as saving?
No. Suspending software with the Switch HOME button is not a substitute for making an in-game save file. Nintendo’s general guidance says to save games that require manual saving before closing the software, but it does not specify how Link’s Awakening handles every suspension or autosave situation. Use the in-game Save option when you want a deliberate saved file.

Where is save data stored?
Nintendo says Switch game save data is stored in the console’s System Memory, not on a microSD card. Nintendo also says archiving or deleting downloaded software does not affect its save data, so you can download the game again and continue from the console’s saved data. These are general Nintendo Switch save-data rules, not claims about a particular in-game save slot. See Nintendo’s data management FAQ.
Back up or restore a save with Nintendo Switch Online
Link’s Awakening supports Save Data Cloud, according to Nintendo’s game listing. The feature is optional and requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership; it is separate from saving through the game’s System menu.

Check cloud settings before changing consoles
Nintendo says automatic save-data backup is enabled by default when a Nintendo Switch Online membership starts. Automatic save-data download, however, must be enabled on each console, and Nintendo cautions that automatic features are not supported by every game. When moving to another console, check the relevant user, the game’s cloud status, and the destination console’s settings rather than assuming the newest save has already synced. Take care when downloading a backup
Nintendo warns that downloading cloud save data replaces the existing console save for that game. Overwritten data cannot be recovered. Before restoring, check which copy is newer and make sure you intend to replace the console copy. Nintendo’s restore instructions are at How to download Save Data Cloud backups.

Does the 2025 update change the save steps?
Nintendo lists version 1.1.0 as released June 3, 2025. Its update notes describe Switch 2 display optimization and HDR support, and say saved data remains available after updating. The update does not change the save steps above. Nintendo’s notes are at the version 1.1.0 update page.
