A loot box can feel like winning because it combines the chance of a desirable reward with suspense about what is inside. The player may feel anticipation before the reveal and excitement when a rare item appears. Research helps explain those reactions, but it does not show that every player responds the same way or that loot boxes universally count as gambling.
What makes a loot-box opening feel like a win?
The reward is uncertain: a player knows what they hope to get but not whether the next box will contain it. When a possible prize is rare or especially desirable, the opening can feel consequential even before the outcome is known. That suspense is part of the experience, not just a reaction to receiving the item.

In a 2019 experimental study, participants rated boxes containing rarer rewards as more valuable, rewarding, arousing, and likely to prompt an urge to open more. The study also reported anticipatory arousal before the reveal and stronger physiological response measures for rarer rewards. These are findings from experiments, not proof that every opening produces the same response or that arousal necessarily leads to addiction. Read the study record.
Why uncertainty can encourage another attempt
Variable rewards
Some loot-box systems provide rewards on an unpredictable schedule: a player may receive an ordinary item several times before getting a rare one. Behavioral research describes this kind of pattern as variable-ratio reinforcement. Because the next attempt might produce the wanted item, a player may be motivated to keep trying. It is one possible mechanism, not a complete explanation of every player’s behavior or every game’s design.

The UK Government’s 2022 response to its call for evidence summarized the mechanism this way: “This included variable ratio reinforcement schedules, which encourages repeating learned behaviours for a chance to acquire a valuable item and psychological triggers, such as ‘near misses’ and audiovisual design.” The response discusses possible design and behavioral mechanisms; it does not establish that all games use them or that they affect every player identically. Near misses and audiovisual cues
A near miss is an outcome that appears close to a desired result but does not deliver it. Research on gambling machines has associated near misses with arousal and reward-related responses. A systematic review covered 51 experimental human studies selected from an initial pool of 802 records; it examined near misses and losses disguised as wins in electronic gaming machines, not loot boxes specifically. That background cannot establish that a particular loot-box animation is a near miss or that the effects transfer unchanged to video games. A gambling near-miss study and the systematic review address those related but distinct contexts.

Sound, animation, and other presentation choices may contribute to the feeling of suspense or excitement. The UK response discusses audiovisual cues alongside near misses, but it does not mean every box-opening sequence uses the same cues. The format and impact depend on the game and the player.
Players do not all open boxes for the same reason
A 2021 qualitative study used in-depth interviews with 28 UK gamers to explore reasons for engaging with loot boxes. The sample is useful for understanding participants’ experiences, not for estimating how common a motivation is among all players. The researchers’ title, “It’s the Attraction of Winning That Draws You in,” frames one theme from those interviews rather than making a claim about every player. Read the interview study.

The UK Government response reports that some respondents described seeking a “buzz” or “thrill,” including excitement at receiving a rare or valuable reward. Those phrases describe reported participant accounts, not a universal reaction or a population-wide finding.

No single psychological resemblance settles the legal question. The relevant comparison can include whether real money is spent, what the reward is, whether it can be exchanged or sold, how outcomes are presented, and the law in the jurisdiction concerned. The UK Government response notes limits to applying psychological criteria when deciding the legal scope of gambling regulation in Great Britain.

In discussing one assessment of 22 loot-box deployments against five psychological criteria for gambling, the response said 10 deployments did not fully meet the criteria; more than half did not fully meet them. That assessment is not a legal ruling, and the criteria do not by themselves determine whether a particular loot box is legally gambling in Great Britain. Legal definitions and individual game features matter. The government response explains the assessment and its limits.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
- It can explain plausible mechanisms: uncertainty, the possibility of a rare reward, anticipation, and some presentation cues can help make an opening exciting or encourage another attempt.
- It can document experiences in studied groups: experiments measured responses to reward rarity, while interviews captured motivations described by a small group of UK gamers.
- It cannot establish a universal reaction: not every player is motivated by rarity or suspense, and not every game presents randomized rewards in the same way.
- It does not prove causation of gambling disorder: psychological resemblance, reported excitement, and association are not equivalent to evidence that loot boxes alone cause gambling harm.
