An older Wi-Fi device can slow newer devices when they are actively sharing a busy channel: Wi-Fi clients take turns using the radio, and a slow transmission can occupy that shared airtime longer. But an old device does not automatically force every newer device to run at its speed. The impact depends on traffic, signal quality, interference, and router configuration.
Why a slow device can affect others
Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium. Devices using the same channel contend for opportunities to transmit, so each active device gets a portion of the available airtime. Apple notes that a user’s experience depends on channel bandwidth and how many devices share it: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

A device sending data at a lower rate may need more time on the air to deliver the same amount of information. Cisco’s deployment guidance describes lower data rates as less airtime-efficient because radios remain on the air longer: Cisco RRM Deployment Guide. When that device is transmitting heavily on a congested channel, it can leave less airtime for other clients.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is a conditional effect, not a universal speed penalty. An idle device is not continuously using data airtime like one transferring a large file, although Wi-Fi management traffic still exists. No fixed percentage slowdown applies to every old client; the outcome varies with the router, channel, signal, client mix, and traffic pattern.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Why compatibility does not mean every device slows to the oldest speed
A router can support older Wi-Fi clients while newer clients use the radio modes they support. Apple recommends enabling all modes offered by the router so each device can connect using its fastest supported mode. Cisco also describes Wi-Fi 6 as backward-compatible with legacy clients: Cisco Wi-Fi 6 FAQ.
The key distinction is between a shared channel’s airtime and a single speed setting imposed on every client. The older client may consume a larger share of airtime while it is active, but that does not mean all newer clients must adopt its maximum rate.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
What else can make newer devices feel slow
- Weak signal: A client far from the router or blocked by walls may use a lower data rate, extending its airtime and reducing its own reliability.
- Interference and channel congestion: Nearby routers and other devices can compete for or disrupt channel use. Apple notes that channel conditions vary with local interference.
- Heavy simultaneous traffic: Several active clients can divide available channel time, even if all are modern.
- Router configuration or limits: Supported bands, radio modes, firmware, coverage, and the number of active clients all affect results.
Because these factors overlap, a slowdown noticed when an old device connects does not by itself prove that the device is the cause.
How to check whether the older device is responsible
- Check band and access point: In the router’s device list or Wi-Fi app, see which band and access point each device uses. If possible, determine whether they share the same channel.
- Compare activity, not just connection: Check performance with the older device idle, then while it transfers data. Treat the difference as a diagnostic observation for your home network, not a general benchmark.
- Enable supported modes and bands: In the router’s wireless settings, enable the radio modes and bands it supports so each compatible client can use its best available option.
- Check basic router settings: Update router firmware, leave WMM enabled, and use automatic channel selection if the router offers it. Apple warns that disabling WMM can affect performance and reliability.
- Reassess local conditions: If the problem persists, consider interference, channel congestion, and router placement rather than assuming the older client is solely responsible.
When a network change or upgrade may help
Separating devices across bands or access points can help only when it actually reduces contention or improves coverage; it is not a guaranteed fix. Avoid creating many Wi-Fi network names as a reflex: Apple says each SSID adds management overhead and reduces airtime available for data, recommending three or fewer SSIDs on networks before Wi-Fi 6: Apple’s Wi-Fi router settings guidance.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If troubleshooting points to inadequate coverage, radio modes, or client capacity, compare a newer router or an additional access point against your actual needs. Check Wi-Fi generation and supported radio modes, supported bands, expected active client load, placement and coverage, and compatibility with older devices and security settings. Newer standards can support stronger performance and more concurrent clients, but no upgrade guarantees a particular speed increase in every home.
