For a Windows laptop used for browsing, documents and streaming, 8 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point; consider 16 GB if you multitask heavily or use demanding apps. For storage, choose capacity around the apps and files you expect to keep, and favor an SSD or eMMC over an HDD when possible. Windows 11’s 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage minimums are compatibility requirements, not sensible buying targets.
Know what RAM and storage do
RAM is the computer’s temporary working memory. It holds the apps and information currently in use, helping the laptop handle several tasks at once. Storage keeps your apps and files when the computer is turned off. More storage cannot make up for too little RAM, and more RAM does not give you more room for photos or downloads.

Choose RAM for the way you work
Microsoft recommends 8 GB of memory for longer-term use. That is a practical baseline for everyday browsing, documents and streaming, not a guarantee that every laptop with 8 GB will feel equally fast. The processor, software and number of open apps also affect performance. See Microsoft’s guidance on computer memory.
When 8 GB is a reasonable starting point
If your typical day involves a browser, email, office documents and video streaming, 8 GB is a sensible starting configuration. If you often keep many browser tabs and multiple apps open together, extra memory can provide more room for that workload.

When to consider 16 GB or more
Consider 16 GB or more if you regularly multitask with many apps or work with photo and video editing or other high-performance projects. Microsoft identifies that amount as potentially suitable for those uses; the right amount still depends on the specific applications and workload.
Do not buy to the Windows minimum
Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM as a Windows 11 minimum system requirement. That threshold addresses whether a device meets a requirement, not whether it is a comfortable choice for everyday use. Microsoft’s longer-term recommendation is 8 GB.

Estimate how much storage you need
There is no universally right storage capacity for everyday buyers. Before comparing laptop listings, think about the applications you will install and how much room you need for documents, downloads, photos, videos and files you want available offline. Leave additional free space rather than planning to fill the drive completely.

Windows 11’s minimum storage requirement is a device with at least 64 GB of storage. It is not a recommended capacity for a typical laptop purchase: your operating system, applications and personal files all need space beyond the bare minimum. Check the exact listing’s capacity against your own expected use.

Compare drive type as well as capacity
A large drive is not automatically the better everyday choice if it is much slower. Microsoft says computers with HDD storage are typically slower to use than those with SSD or eMMC storage, and notes that speed can matter more than size. When comparing otherwise suitable configurations, look at both the capacity and whether the drive is an HDD, SSD or eMMC. See Microsoft’s guidance on Windows drive space.
Keep free space available for Windows updates
Storage capacity is not all available for your personal files. Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6–11 GB or more of free space, with the actual amount varying. Some update paths can use external storage to reduce the space needed on the system drive. An external drive can therefore help with file storage or certain updates, but it does not add RAM or improve multitasking.

Check whether the laptop can be upgraded
Do not assume you can add memory or replace the internal drive later. Upgrade options vary by laptop. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model or ask the retailer whether its RAM and storage can be upgraded. Microsoft also directs buyers to manufacturers or retailers for this information: Windows 11 specifications and system requirements.
