If OBS keeps replaying one clip, first check the source in the OBS scene: a Media Source plays an individual file and can loop it, while a VLC Video source can hold a playlist. YouTube’s repeat button only affects what a viewer plays on YouTube; it does not choose which local file OBS sends to your live stream.
Check which OBS source is playing the video
In the scene that feeds your live output, identify the source responsible for the video. OBS documents Media Source as a source for an individual file, with a Loop option. VLC Video is the built-in source that accepts multiple playlist items, with separate controls for looping and shuffling. A Media Source with looping enabled is therefore a likely setting to inspect when one clip keeps returning, though the source type alone cannot diagnose a particular scene collection.

Fix a VLC Video playlist that does not advance as expected
- Inspect the playlist entries and order. Open the VLC Video source’s properties and make sure it contains the distinct files you intend to play. Check that the listed order matches your intended sequence.
- Review
Loop Playlist. OBS defines this setting as restarting the source when it has run out of media files. Enable it if you want the playlist to start again after its final item; it does not mean that each item should be replaced by the same file. - Review
Shuffle Playlist. Turn shuffle off if you want files to play in the order shown. When enabled, the source randomizes the files rather than preserving list order. - Check source visibility behavior. VLC Video has options for stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when it becomes visible. Scene changes or source visibility may therefore affect playback. Check the source’s visibility settings if the clip restarts after changing scenes.

If VLC Video is missing or unavailable
The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS also specifies that a 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC. Check that both are installed and have matching architectures, then reopen OBS and check the source list again. If the source still is not available, note your operating system and OBS and VLC versions when seeking help.
Why YouTube’s repeat control will not fix OBS playback
YouTube’s repeat controls apply to a viewer watching a YouTube video or playlist. They do not select or advance the local files used by OBS’s live output. Changing the viewer-side repeat setting will not correct an OBS source that contains one looping file or a misconfigured VLC playlist. If playback restarts after editing a running playlist
An OBS forum thread includes a user report of playback returning to the first file after media was added during a live stream. That report does not establish a universal cause or behavior across OBS versions, VLC versions, and operating systems. If your issue occurs only after editing the playlist while live, test the change on a copy of the scene before relying on it during a broadcast. Record the OBS and VLC versions and whether the playlist was edited during playback when troubleshooting. The report is in the OBS forum thread started April 20, 2020.
Should you use a third-party playlist source?
OBS forum listings include third-party playlist options, but they are not guaranteed fixes or official compatibility promises. Before installing one, compare its supported platforms and compatibility with your OBS version, playlist-editing behavior, and stated limitations against the built-in VLC Video source. The Media Playlist Source listing was created August 8, 2023, and reports an update on April 13, 2025.
