How to Stream a YouTube Live Playlist from a Windows PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To broadcast a playlist of video files stored on a Windows PC, use an encoder such as OBS Studio with its VLC Video Source, then connect the encoder to a stream in YouTube Studio. A regular YouTube playlist only organizes videos already hosted on YouTube; it does not create a live broadcast. With the local-file method, your PC, files and internet connection must remain available while the stream runs.

Choose the right kind of playlist

If you mean a list of local video files, you can play them in sequence through an encoder and send the encoder feed to YouTube Live. OBS Project community guidance points to OBS’s VLC Video Source for this use, provided VLC is installed; behavior and interface details can vary by version. See the OBS community discussion about streaming local-file playlists.

If you mean an ordinary playlist of videos already on YouTube, that playlist is for organizing hosted videos, not for generating an encoder feed. YouTube’s instructions for creating and managing playlists on a computer describe that separate feature. Do not extract another creator’s playback link and rebroadcast it: use media you have the necessary rights to broadcast.

Check channel eligibility and prepare your files

  • YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to livestream from a computer. Users must be at least 16 to livestream. If this is your first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable it. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Put the video files you intend to play in an accessible folder and confirm you have rights to the video and audio. Make sure the PC has enough free storage and will not sleep during the broadcast.
  • Install OBS Studio and VLC if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video Source. An external SSD is optional; it can keep a large local media collection accessible, but it is not required if your internal storage is sufficient.
  • Check your upload speed using the connection you will use for the broadcast. YouTube recommends retaining about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; upload capacity matters more than download speed. Its live-streaming tips cover connection preparation.

Set up the local playlist in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast. Add a VLC Video Source, then add the local files in the order you want them to play. The exact labels and playlist controls can differ across installed versions.
  2. Play the source in OBS and check that each file advances as expected. Verify both the picture and audio, and confirm that the intended sequence is correct before connecting to YouTube.
  3. Keep the source files in their original locations and avoid moving or renaming them while the broadcast is running. OBS must be able to read them throughout playback.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you prepared. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
  3. Choose output settings that your PC and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions page lists supported settings; test the selected quality rather than assuming that a fast download connection is sufficient.
  4. Start streaming from OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then use the appropriate start controls there for your selected stream setup. Sending video from OBS does not necessarily mean the event has been started for viewers.

Test and monitor the broadcast

Before relying on the setup for an event, test the whole path: playlist playback, sound, upload connection, YouTube preview and the Live Control Room start flow. During the broadcast, watch for dropped frames, missing audio, stalled playback and stream-health warnings. Leave the computer awake, keep OBS open, and do not disconnect the network or media drive.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer uninterrupted broadcast, do not assume YouTube will save one complete replay; check current archive controls and behavior for the planned duration. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • You cannot start a live stream: verify channel eligibility and whether first-time enablement has completed. YouTube says that first enablement can take up to 24 hours.
  • The preview is blank or OBS cannot read a playlist file: confirm VLC is installed, the VLC Video Source points to the correct files, and the files remain accessible at the paths OBS expects. Recheck the playlist order and playback in OBS.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct OBS settings and that the key belongs to the selected stream. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
  • The stream is unstable or drops frames: test upload speed on the actual connection, reduce the output quality if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% upload headroom. Close competing uploads where possible.
  • The video is live but viewers cannot hear it: inspect OBS audio meters and source audio settings, then confirm sound in the Live Control Room preview before starting the event.
  • The stream stops when you leave: the local workflow depends on the PC, OBS, source files and internet connection staying available. Disable sleep and avoid shutting down or disconnecting any part of that setup.
