Chinese brands rose from 10.4% of new passenger cars in 2024 to 13.7% in 2025, and private buyers in 2026 are choosing them at a higher rate still. Over the same period, EV owners have become more likely to say they are politically skeptical of Chinese cars, and car owners name data handling as a concern. The two trends coexist because they measure different things: what people buy, and what they say they think about trust, data and long-term ownership. Surveys do not establish one reason behind any single purchase, but they do show which considerations buyers weigh.
What the numbers actually measure
Several different figures are being discussed together, and they describe different groups over different periods. Keeping them apart is the first step to reading the trend correctly.

| Measure | Figure | Population and period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese brands’ share of new Norwegian passenger cars | 10.4% | All new passenger cars, full year 2024 | Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV), 2026 |
| Chinese brands’ share of new Norwegian passenger cars | 13.7% | All new passenger cars, full year 2025 (around 25,000 cars) | OFV, 2026 |
| Chinese brands’ share of private first-time registrations | 19.4% | Private buyers only, January 1 to September 27, 2026; a partial year, not a full-year all-market share | OFV, 2026 |
| EV owners who are politically skeptical of Chinese cars | 31% (up from 23% in 2025) | EV owners; survey of nearly 15,000 owners, fieldwork March 31 to May 3, 2026, as described by Euronews | Norwegian EV Association, 2026 |
| Car owners who could imagine buying a Chinese car | 37% | Norwegian car owners in the OFV/DAT Report 2026, published June 16, 2026 | OFV/DAT, 2026 |
| Buyers of a new Chinese car who previously had a European brand | 48% | Buyers of new Chinese cars in OFV’s 2026 buyer analysis | OFV, 2026 |
The OFV figures use brand identity, while the Norwegian EV Association defines Chinese manufacturers by ownership. Its list includes Volvo, Polestar, Smart and Lotus alongside BYD, XPeng and NIO. A buyer who chooses a Volvo may not think of it as a Chinese car, so an ownership-based count and a brand-based count can give different answers. Read each percentage with its definition attached.

Chinese-brand sales are also spread across many makes and models rather than concentrated in one manufacturer. OFV’s buyer comparisons name BYD, XPeng, NIO and other brands.

Why some buyers are open to Chinese cars
The most consistent message in the 2026 OFV/DAT survey is that buyers choose on practical terms first. In that survey, 57% of Norwegian car owners said they buy on features and quality, and said country of origin is not decisive. The same survey found that 68% believe increased competition improves choice and prices.
OFV’s Sales and Marketing Director, Laila Grønstad Mikalsen, summarized the position this way:
“Pris og utstyr betyr mye, men det er ikke nok. Kundene vurderer også kvalitet, driftssikkerhet, serviceapparat, datatrygghet og annenhåndsverdi.” (Translation: price and equipment matter, but they are not enough. Customers also weigh quality, reliability, service networks, data security and resale value.)

- Ideal Gift: Perfect for car collectors, boyfriends, or anyone who appreciates exquisite automotive craftsmanship. An ideal present for birthdays, Christmas, and other special occasions.
That list is useful because it shows that buyers are not only comparing sticker prices. They are also weighing how a car will hold up, how it will be serviced, and what it will be worth later.
Why others remain wary
The skepticism is concentrated in the same areas that buyers say matter. In the OFV/DAT Report 2026, 70% of car owners said they prefer established brands, 42% worry that data may be handled in China, and 40% think many Chinese brands may disappear from the Norwegian market within five years.
The Norwegian EV Association links these concerns to a broader change in what cars are. Its Secretary General, Christina Bu, said: “New cars are, in practice, computers on wheels.” She also said: “As data security and privacy receive more attention, it is only natural that more consumers become concerned about where the cars come from and how the data is handled.”

Bu also placed responsibility with government. In a statement from September 25, 2026, she said: “I understand consumers who are unsure about this. At the same time, it is the authorities’ responsibility to ensure that vehicles sold in Norway meet requirements for safety and privacy.” (This English rendering is a translation; quote the original Norwegian where exact wording matters.)

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy both trends can rise at once
A rising share and rising doubt do not contradict each other, for three reasons.
- Stated attitudes and purchases are different measures. A respondent can worry about data handling and still find a car’s price, equipment and warranty more persuasive when shopping.
- Buyers are switching from incumbents. OFV’s 2026 buyer analysis found that 48% of new Chinese-car buyers previously had a European brand, 20.4% a Japanese brand, 11.9% an American brand (including Tesla), 7.7% a Korean brand, and 12.1% already owned a Chinese car. Those are the origins of buyers, not the reasons for switching, so they show movement between brands rather than a motive.
- Skepticism is partly about the category, not only the brand. The rise in political skepticism among EV owners (from 23% in 2025 to 31% in 2026) reflects broader worries about software, data and oversight, which apply to every connected car.
The Norwegian market context
Norway is an unusual baseline. The International Energy Agency reports that electric cars were about 97% of new car sales in Norway in 2025, and nearly all of those were battery electric. That means buyers choosing a Chinese brand are usually choosing among electric models, so the question is which brand, not whether to go electric.

- Our high - end casting method allows for feature rich details, such as an opening hood, doors , detailed interior, and trunk
- Scale is 1:24

Policy also shapes the choice. According to the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026, the battery-EV purchase tax exemption tightened in 2026 to vehicles priced at NOK 300,000 or less, down from NOK 500,000, and is scheduled to be phased out completely in 2028. Thresholds and implementation details can change, so confirm current rules with official Norwegian sources before relying on them.
Charging is part of the ownership decision
In the OFV/DAT 2026 survey, 39% said an EV would not be an option if they could not charge at home, and 46% said charging infrastructure is still inadequate. For many prospective owners, then, a home charging point is a condition of ownership, and it affects which models are practical to buy at all.

- Definition: Is “Chinese” based on brand identity or on corporate ownership?
- Population: Does the figure cover all new registrations, private buyers, car owners or EV owners?
- Period: Is it a full year or a partial year such as January to September?
- Question type: Does it record what people bought, or what they say they think?
Applying these checks shows that the headline trend is real, but no single survey explains why an individual buyer chose a particular car. Stated concerns about trust and data are measured in surveys, and purchase choices are measured in registrations. Each measure is valid for its own question.
No firsthand testing of these vehicles is part of this analysis. The figures above come from the sources named in the table and the sections that follow.
