That speed gain is the reporter’s impression, not a measured result. The report publishes no benchmark, timing or percentage, and its “1,400+” figure describes the author’s own Xbox title collection, not how the app performs.
What this preview is, and what it is not
- It is an early preview. Windows Central, in Jez Corden’s report, refers to the build by the codename Garrison. It is not a confirmed general release.
- It has no official launch date. Corden suggests Xbox Insiders could receive it in the coming weeks. That is his expectation, not an announcement from Xbox or Microsoft.
- It has no official quotes about this build. The report contains no statement from an Xbox or Microsoft spokesperson about the redesign. Everything about the app’s behavior comes from the author’s hands-on time with it.
What the hands-on reported
Library loading speed
The headline claim is that the preview is quicker than the previous app when it loads a large library. Corden tested it with a library of more than 1,400 Xbox titles. That number tells you how big the test library was, not how fast the app is. The report gives no stopwatch figures, no repeat runs, and no description of the hardware or network used, so “a lot faster” cannot be turned into a time saved or a percentage. Treat it as a credible first impression that still needs independent timing.

Telling installable games from cloud-only titles
The author says the preview makes it easier to see which games can be installed on the device and which are available only through Xbox Cloud Gaming. For a library with a mix of local and streamed titles, that distinction is the most practical usability change in the report. The article does not say how the labels are displayed, and it does not say whether they match Xbox’s own catalog data in every case.
Navigation between store and game listings
The preview combines store listings and game listings in one interface. According to the report, this streamlines moving between buying a game and managing one you already own. The change is described qualitatively; the report does not count clicks or measure how long a task takes.
#1 Best Overall

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Mouse, keyboard and controller layouts
The preview supports layouts for mouse and keyboard as well as for a controller. Corden says it can be set as the default home screen when a Windows 11 PC enters Game Mode. He calls controller-scaled use on a device such as the Xbox Ally ideal. The report does not evaluate either input layout in detail, so there is no basis for ranking one against the other.
New features
The author describes the app as focused on performance and usability, with few new features at this stage. That makes it a refinement of the existing app rather than a feature expansion.

How much of the story is measured
The table separates what the report states from what it measures. Only the first column has direct support in the reporting, and none of the rows is backed by a controlled test.

Xbox mode is a separate experience
Readers searching for the new app often encounter Xbox mode at the same time, and the two are easy to confuse. Xbox mode is an existing Windows feature. The new app preview is not described as part of its rollout. The table keeps the two apart.

| Status | Gradual rollout in select markets, announced April 30, 2026 by Xbox Wire | Early preview, codenamed Garrison; no official launch date |
| Windows requirement | Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, per Microsoft Support | Not stated in the report |
| Design | Controller-optimized, full-screen experience | Mouse and keyboard layout plus controller layout |
| Library scope | Aggregated library that includes the Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts | Install-versus-cloud labels for the titles in a user’s library |
| Handheld startup behavior | Enabling startup into Xbox mode limits background processes, which Microsoft says can improve battery life and gaming performance | Not described |
| Performance evidence | Official statements from Microsoft describing the feature | Author’s hands-on impression only |
Microsoft’s claims about background-process limits describe Xbox mode’s startup setting. They are not measurements of the redesigned app, and they should not be read as explaining the preview’s reported speed.
Controllers, handhelds and cost
A Windows-compatible Xbox controller is optional. The preview supports a controller layout, and Microsoft describes Xbox mode as controller-optimized, but the report does not suggest that a controller is needed to run the app or that it makes the app faster.

The report names the ROG Xbox Ally as a handheld suited to controller-scaled use. Xbox Wire’s October 30, 2025 update described the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X as available for purchase at that time. That is historical context. It does not establish current stock or pricing, and the redesigned app is not limited to handhelds: it is relevant to any Windows PC.
How to check the speed claim yourself
Because the reported gain rests on one reviewer’s experience, a reader who gets the preview can test it in a way the report does not. Use the following method to compare the two apps fairly.
Best Value
- XBOX WIRELESS CONTROLLER + USB-C CABLE — Includes the XBOX Wireless Controller in Carbon Black and a 9' USB-C cable. Play wirelessly or plug in for a wired gaming experience, right out of the box.*
- WIRED OR WIRELESS, YOUR CALL — Connect the included 9' USB-C cable for zero-setup wired play on console and PC. Go wireless when you want the freedom to play from the couch, the desk, or anywhere in between.
- PC READY. NO EXTRAS NEEDED — Plug the USB-C cable into your Windows PC and you're playing instantly. No adapters, no Bluetooth pairing, no additional purchases required. Works across the XBOX app, Steam, and more.*
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience sculpted surfaces and refined geometry designed around how you actually hold a controller. Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grip on the triggers, bumpers, and back case.
- UP TO 40 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 40 hours of wireless battery life on standard AA batteries. When the batteries run low, plug in the included cable and keep playing without missing a beat.*
- Record your Windows version. Open Settings, select System, then About, and note the version and edition.
- Use the same PC, the same network connection and the same library for both apps. Close other heavy programs first.
- Time how long the library takes to appear fully in the previous app. Repeat the test at least three times and note the results.
- Repeat the same timing in the preview. Use the same method, and note whether the first launch after a restart differs from later launches.
- Check the install-versus-cloud labels against the games you have installed locally. Any mismatch is worth recording.
A result that holds across repeated runs on your own hardware is more useful than the single impression in the report.
Current status
Corden’s report is the only source for the preview’s behavior, and it describes that behavior qualitatively. The speed improvement is credible as an early impression, and it is consistent with a design focused on performance and usability. It is not a quantified result, and no launch date has been set.
