A newly assigned U.S. street address can be valid with the local government yet missing from USPS lookup, a delivery company, or a map. Those systems do not share one instantly updated address database. If an account of new houses being undeliverable because address data was a year old describes a particular incident, that one-year lag needs to be verified from the incident’s own records: the official sources below explain how address data moves, but do not identify that case or establish who held the stale record.
Why can’t a company find a new-build address?
In the United States, the local government assigns street addresses; USPS does not. After assignment, the local government is responsible for reporting a new address to USPS Address Management for possible inclusion in delivery routes. USPS says companies that use its address database may need additional time to update their own systems after postal verification. Other services may rely on private address-data providers, so recognition by one system does not guarantee recognition by another.

That separation is visible in the broader address ecosystem: the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Address Database compiles records from state, local, and tribal government address programs, while USPS maintains postal address and delivery-route records. GPS.gov explains that apps and delivery services also use a variety of private sources. These related systems are not a single database that refreshes everywhere at once.

Establishing responsibility requires the records for that incident, including which system the delivery company queried and when its address data was last updated.

How do I get USPS to recognize my new address?
- Confirm the official assignment. Check with the local government that assigned the street address, and verify that any apartment, unit, or suite designation is correct.
- Allow 5–7 business days after assignment, then check USPS. Search the address in the USPS ZIP Code Lookup. USPS says a successful match includes the assigned ZIP+4.
- If it is still missing, contact USPS. A resident can contact the local Post Office or submit a Growth Management Assistance Request. Builders and developers can use that request to reach a USPS Growth Coordinator.
USPS says changes and corrections to its national database appear in ZIP Code Lookup within 30 to 60 days. That is a timeframe for the USPS lookup display, not a guarantee that every carrier, retailer, map, or private address database will refresh within the same period.
What if USPS finds the address but another service does not?
If USPS recognizes the address but a retailer, carrier, map, or other service rejects it, contact that service and ask it to correct or refresh its own address record. USPS notes that businesses using USPS data may need extra time after postal verification; a service using another provider may have a separate update path. The official sources do not establish a universal deadline for those private systems.

What the delivery-point numbers do—and do not—show
A 2023 USPS Office of Inspector General report, Trends in New Delivery Points, says 4.2 million delivery points were deleted from the USPS Address Management System across fiscal years 2011–2021, an average of about 380,000 per year over that period. Those figures concern removed delivery points. They show that records change over time, but do not measure additions of new homes, address-update delays, or the number of homes affected by an outdated database.
