New game consoles can cost more than earlier models because component prices and broader economic conditions change—and a manufacturer can raise its recommended price after launch. The reasons differ by company, and the price notices alone do not reveal how much it costs to build any particular console.
Why can a new console cost more?
There is no single explanation that applies to every console or generation. Manufacturers point to changing costs and market conditions, but their announcements are explanations for their own pricing decisions—not independently verified breakdowns of each model’s manufacturing cost.

Memory and storage can become more expensive
In its 2026 Xbox pricing notice, Microsoft said console storage and memory prices had increased by more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. That is Microsoft’s account and forecast, not an independently verified projection for the whole console industry. The notice connects those component pressures to Xbox pricing, but does not assign a specific dollar amount to memory or storage in each console.

Nintendo of America said its 2026 Switch 2 price revision responded to changes in market conditions that it expected to continue over the medium to long term. Sony said continued pressures in the global economic landscape led it to raise recommended prices in 2026. Those statements identify the companies’ stated rationales; they do not quantify the contribution of particular costs, tariffs, exchange rates, or other factors.

Prices can rise after a console launches
A successor is not the only reason a console may cost more. Sony’s US suggested retail price for the PS5 disc-drive model was $499.99 at launch in 2020. Sony announced that its US recommended price would be $649.99 effective April 2, 2026—a nominal increase of $150. The comparison is not adjusted for inflation and compares the launch price with a later recommended price.
Other announced US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 were $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are Sony’s recommended prices, not a guarantee of a retailer’s selling price or stock.

Successor generations can launch at a higher nominal price
Sony announced a US MSRP of $399.99 for PS4 in 2013. Its 2020 PS5 launch prices were $499.99 for the disc-drive model and $399.99 for PS5 Digital Edition. Comparing the disc-drive PS5 with PS4 shows a $100 higher nominal launch price in the same country, but it does not establish either console’s manufacturing cost or profit margin.

How to compare console prices fairly
- Match the country and currency. Regional pricing can differ, so do not compare a US price with a price from another market.
- Match the edition. Check whether the model has a disc drive and note storage tiers or other hardware differences.
- Compare like with like. Distinguish a launch MSRP from a later recommended price and from a retailer’s actual selling price.
- Label nominal comparisons. A higher dollar figure across years is not, by itself, an inflation-adjusted comparison. No inflation-adjusted calculation is provided here.
- Keep cost claims attributed. A manufacturer’s explanation does not establish a complete bill of materials, the profit or loss on a console, or how much each factor contributed.
What the price announcements do—and do not—show
Hardware helps explain why component markets matter: Sony’s 2020 PS5 announcement described an ultra-high-speed SSD, while Microsoft’s 2026 notice specifically cited rising storage and memory prices. These examples show that storage and memory are relevant considerations, but they do not provide a cost for an individual feature or a full manufacturing-cost comparison between generations.
The available company notices establish the prices, dates, regions, and explanations the manufacturers announced. They do not establish a complete history of console manufacturing costs or support a single industry-wide estimate of how much those costs have risen.
