When a Netflix show looks “cheap,” that impression does not prove it had a small budget—or that Netflix has one house style. The image you see can reflect creative choices, production resources, streaming delivery, and your TV’s settings. Separating those factors is the best way to understand what you are noticing.
What does “cheap-looking” actually mean?
“Cheap” is a judgment about appearance, not a measurement of a show’s budget. A viewer might use it for flat lighting, sparse or unconvincing sets, weak separation between foreground and background, visual effects that do not blend into a scene, or a polished image that feels generic. Those impressions can have different causes, so start with the specific feature that seems wrong rather than assuming a production was underfunded.

A useful distinction is between what the filmmakers chose, what the production could support, what the stream delivered, and what the display showed. More than one factor can contribute to the same impression. Without title-specific evidence, appearance alone cannot establish a show’s budget, schedule, or creative process.
How can artistic choices be mistaken for low production value?
Lighting, framing, sets, costumes, and color all shape a show’s visual identity. A deliberate style may look wrong to someone expecting a different one, even when the choices serve the story. Conversely, a production may fail to achieve the look it intended; style is not proof that every result is successful.

Ripley as a case of deliberate design
Netflix’s account of the 2024 series Ripley describes its black-and-white palette as a purposeful choice. Writer-director Steven Zaillian said, “I never saw it as some sunny, colorful postcard of a story but rather as the foreboding suspense story that it is.” He also connected monochrome to the story’s winter setting and film-noir quality. Actor Dakota Fanning described the show as being about “light and dark and contrasts and the underbelly and what’s going on under the surface.” Netflix Tudum’s account of the series links those choices to its tone and visual approach.
The example shows why a restrained palette or pronounced shadows should not automatically be read as a budget signal. It does not establish how common any particular style is across Netflix titles.

Can production resources or streaming incentives affect the result?
Resources can plausibly influence what a production can build, light, shoot, and finish. But a general industry argument cannot diagnose an individual title. A 2020 academic analysis of Hollywood studio filmmaking and streaming discussed incentives for output volume and smaller budgets in parts of the market. It cited 2018-era reporting that 75% of a then-planned Netflix movie slate consisted of genre films. That historical figure describes the specific slate discussed at the time—not Netflix’s current catalog, a current budget pattern, or the visual quality of any show. The academic analysis does not prove that smaller budgets cause a “cheap” look.
There is no current, comparable dataset in the cited material connecting Netflix production budgets to audience judgments of visual quality. A visual impression is therefore not enough to infer what a particular production spent or what constraints it faced.

Can streaming quality make a show look worse?
Yes, delivery conditions can affect the picture that reaches your screen. Limited bandwidth or a data cap may prevent delivery of an ideal image. Netflix’s video-encoding team describes per-title and shot-based encoding methods intended to use bandwidth efficiently while preserving perceptual quality; its optimization uses VMAF, a video-quality metric Netflix describes as subjective. Netflix’s technical explanation supports a limited conclusion: encoding and network conditions can affect image quality. They do not account for a show’s art direction, performances, lighting plan, costumes, or set construction, and the encoding work is intended to improve picture quality rather than impose a universal defect.
If the image looks soft, blocky, or unstable, delivery may be worth checking. Those symptoms are different from a scene that is consistently flat-lit or a set that feels unconvincing; those are not, by themselves, evidence of a streaming problem.

Could your TV settings be part of the problem?
Picture processing can change color, contrast, motion, and the overall presentation. Netflix’s 2018 announcement of Calibrated Mode offers a historical example: the mode was available exclusively on Sony BRAVIA MASTER Series A9F OLED and Z9F LED televisions at announcement, and Netflix said it adjusted color, dynamic contrast, and motion presentation to more closely resemble creator-calibrated monitors. That announcement is not evidence that the feature is available on current TVs generally. Netflix’s announcement illustrates why the display itself matters.

If you suspect your viewing setup, try these basic checks before blaming the show:
Best Value
- A treat for the eyes: Sharp 4K brings out rich detail on our 43" flat screen TV, while colors pop off in lifelike clarity with HDR10. Roku Smart Picture cleans up incoming TV signals, optimizes them, and chooses the right picture mode.

- More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.
- Check the TV’s picture mode; an unusually vivid or heavily processed preset can change color and contrast.
- Review motion processing if movement looks unnaturally smooth or distorted.
- Confirm that your TV and the title support the HDR format being delivered, if you are watching in HDR.
- Check stream quality and network stability if the image becomes soft, blocky, or inconsistent.
These checks may help identify a display or delivery issue, but they cannot change the filmmakers’ visual choices or guarantee a different result.
Does Netflix have one recognizable look?
Netflix-associated projects use different formats and production approaches. Netflix Open Content documents Sol Levante, an anime short made with 4K HDR and Atmos workflows; Nocturne, a live-action test piece shot at 120 frames per second to challenge codecs; and Sparks, a high-frame-rate project finished at 4,000 nits using ACES. These examples show variety, not what is typical of the entire catalog. Netflix Open Content provides those project examples.
Production executive Anna Mallett has also described creative work spanning production management, post-production, visual effects, music, and technology. In an IBC 2026 keynote transcript, she said, “Every role across a production is a creative one — from colourists and sound mixers, to the DIT protecting the image from the set to screen, and production managers, inventively navigating the many curveballs that come their way.” Her remarks describe the range of roles involved; they are not a claim that every production looks the same.
How to compare two shows without blaming the platform
Compare specific visual features in similar scenes instead of treating “Netflix” as a genre. Useful questions include:
- Lighting and contrast: Are shadows shaped and motivated, or does illumination feel broad and even?
- Production design: Do location, set scale, texture, and dressing make the environment feel lived-in and specific?
- Framing and movement: Do composition, lens perspective, depth, shot duration, and camera movement support the scene?
- Color and finishing: Do the palette, skin tones, contrast, and highlight and shadow detail suit the story?
- Effects integration: Do visual effects match the scene’s lighting, texture, and motion?
- Viewing conditions: Are bandwidth, resolution, HDR support, picture mode, and motion processing comparable?
These questions help describe what you see; they are not a standardized rating system. A fair service-to-service ranking would require comparable titles and a clearly stated method, not an anecdotal impression.
