Deck Box Dungeons is a cooperative fantasy dungeon crawler played with physical cards, meeples, and dice, with a companion app handling quests and encounters. One core set is for 1–2 players; groups of 3–4 need two copies. The Steam app is free, but it is not a standalone game: Steam says the physical board game is required. If you want to avoid the app, the publisher also provides print-and-play quests.
How Deck Box Dungeons works
Players assemble adventurers by choosing character, equipment, and ability cards, then work together to defeat monsters, resolve encounters, and complete a quest objective. The publisher describes scenarios such as escorting a priest through a ritual or defeating a troll threatening a town. The official rules frame the goal as surviving the dungeon, slaying its monsters, completing the quest, and having at least one party member survive.

The physical game is designed to fit in a deck box. The app supplies quests and encounters, including randomly generated content. The publisher says it can also support rebalance changes and later content additions. That makes the app part of the game experience, rather than a digital substitute for the cards, dice, and meeples.
How many players can play Deck Box Dungeons?
The publisher describes one core set as supporting 1–2 players. BoardGameGeek likewise lists 1–2 players, with a second copy allowing play for 1–4. The publisher says groups of 3–4 players need two core sets.

Two copies also give the app more party-building combinations and let it use both sides of map tiles when generating dungeons. If your regular group has three or four players, include the cost and availability of a second set in your decision; one box does not cover that player count.
Do you need the app? Can you play without it?
Using the companion app
The app handles quests and encounters and can generate random versions of both. Steam lists it as a free companion app, developed and published by Ariah Studios, released April 9, 2019. Its listing explicitly says the physical board game is required, so downloading the app alone does not give you a playable copy of Deck Box Dungeons.

Steam lists English interface support. Its store page has platform requirements, but software compatibility can change; check the live listing for current requirements before installing. The page lists Windows XP as the minimum and Windows 7 or above as recommended, while Steam’s broader notice says the Steam Client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. Those statements refer to different things, so the listing should not be treated as a guarantee that the app runs on every current Windows setup.

The publisher offers print-and-play quests for players who cannot or prefer not to use the app. That gives the game an offline quest option, though the evidence does not establish that every app feature or randomly generated encounter is reproduced in print.

The publisher lists six story quests: Troll Trial, Chest Full of Gold, Escort the Priest, Collapsing Caves, Dark Magic, and Phantoms. It also lists seven character quests: Aylen’s Tale, Delyth’s Saga, Dunael’s Story, Fianna’s Gambit, Naeva’s Yarn, Salmarin’s Dirge, and The Ballad of Calder, alongside a link for community-created quests. These are downloadable quests, not evidence of a paid expansion line.
What comes in the box?
The official component list includes:
- 4 Hero cards and 4 Ability cards
- 5 Equipment cards, 5 Enemy cards, and 15 Dungeon cards
- 12 Item cards and 2 Rune cards
- 1 Player reference card and 6 tracker cards
- 5 Player/NPC meeples
- 5 standard D6 dice and 13 custom enemy dice
The list describes the contents of a core set. Since a larger group requires two sets, those players should plan on buying two copies rather than assuming the listed contents support four players.

Which rules should you follow?
The English official rules are version 1.10.00, dated August 24, 2019. They include a precedence note: “If card, quest, or app rules differ from those presented here, follow those rules instead.” In practice, use the relevant card, quest, or app instruction where it conflicts with the general PDF rules.

The publisher has a direct purchase page. Stock and price are time-sensitive, so check the live page rather than relying on an older availability or sale notice. The physical core game is the relevant purchase; the Steam download is a companion app and requires the board game.

Who should consider Deck Box Dungeons?
It is worth considering if you want a compact cooperative dungeon crawler built around physical components and quest-driven play, and are comfortable using an app for quests and encounters—or using the publisher’s print-and-play quests instead. The player-count constraint is central: plan on one core set for up to two players and two copies for three or four. This is a product overview based on published rules and listings, not a hands-on assessment of play quality.
