Home Assistant can send smart-home notifications to a Discord channel, but its official Discord integration cannot read Discord messages or use them to trigger automations. That boundary is the punchline behind the idea of letting devices “chat”: the built-in setup can make them speak, but not listen.
What “chatting” with smart-home devices actually means
There are two different directions to a Discord connection. Home Assistant’s official Discord integration sends messages outward. A two-way exchange requires a separate way to receive and interpret incoming messages.

Home Assistant’s documentation states: “This integration is for outgoing messages only. It cannot read incoming Discord messages or use them as triggers for automations.” It supports notifications with text and supported attachment or embed content, but it does not turn Discord into a command interface by itself. For a one-way status feed or a playful stream of automation updates, Home Assistant can call its Discord notify action. The documented setup involves creating a Discord application and bot, installing that bot on a server with appropriate permissions, adding its token to Home Assistant, and choosing a channel ID or user ID as the destination. Treat the bot token like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to act as the bot, subject to its permissions. Home Assistant setup details

This approach is useful when the desired result is a message in Discord—for example, an automation reporting a change in state. It does not imply that a device is composing a reply, understanding a conversation, or accepting a Discord command.
What you need for a genuine two-way exchange
An application that must listen to Discord events or respond to users needs an inbound component. Discord recommends a bot for that purpose: “If you need your app to also listen for events or respond to users, building a Discord bot is the better fit.” Discord’s developer documentation

A bot can receive messages or events, but it still needs application logic to decide what they mean and whether to pass a request to Home Assistant. That bridge is separate from Home Assistant’s outgoing notification integration. Any commands passed through it should be narrowly limited and validated rather than treated as trusted instructions just because they came from a familiar Discord server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere Home Assistant webhooks fit—and where they do not
Home Assistant webhook triggers accept HTTP requests with form or JSON payloads. They can provide an inbound path into an automation, but a webhook is not a general-purpose authenticated command API. Its ID functions as a secret credential, so use a unique, difficult-to-guess value and do not expose it in public messages, logs, or code repositories. Home Assistant restricts webhook access by default to the local network or Nabu Casa Cloud webhooks; keep access local where possible. Home Assistant webhook trigger documentation

The security consequence matters more than the novelty. Home Assistant specifically warns against using webhooks for destructive or safety-sensitive actions, including unlocking a lock. A Discord-to-webhook bridge should not turn a loosely checked chat message into an action with physical consequences.

An incoming Discord channel webhook is a way for another system to post into a channel; it does not listen to channel conversation. Discord application webhook events work in the opposite direction: Discord sends selected events to a public endpoint belonging to an application. Those events are not guaranteed to arrive in real time or in order, and the receiving endpoint must validate Discord’s request signatures. Discord application webhook events documentation

So the word “webhook” does not, by itself, mean a two-way connection. Choose the mechanism based on which system needs to send and which needs to receive.

Is MQTT part of the Discord connection?
MQTT is a lightweight publish/subscribe protocol used for machine-to-machine and IoT messaging. It may be part of the device layer in a smart-home setup, but it is separate from the Home Assistant Discord integration and is not required for that integration to post notifications. MQTT overview
