Movies can look choppy on an OLED because its pixels switch so quickly that they reveal the staccato motion of 24-frames-per-second film instead of softening it with transition blur. The source has not gained or lost frames: each frame is simply held on screen until the next one arrives, and slow pans make those jumps especially easy to notice.
Why does my OLED look choppy during movies?
Pixel response time describes how quickly a pixel changes from one state to another. OLED’s fast transitions reduce the smearing that slower pixel changes can leave behind; they do not create the choppiness or add frames to a movie. The underlying issue is the combination of low-frame-rate motion and a display that holds each frame between updates. RTINGS explains this as stutter in its TV motion tests.

When your eyes follow an object across a slow camera pan, the image remains still on the screen until the next film frame appears. Your eyes move, but the displayed detail does not move continuously with them, so the pan can seem to jump. With little pixel-transition blur to disguise those steps, OLED can make the film’s frame cadence more apparent. Whether you notice it depends on the scene and your sensitivity to the effect.
Is it stutter or judder?
These terms describe related but distinct motion problems. Stutter is the perceived choppiness associated with low-frame-rate content and frames held on screen. Judder is uneven motion cadence: it can happen when a source’s frame rate does not divide evenly into the display’s refresh rate, causing some frames to be repeated for different amounts of time. RTINGS distinguishes the two in its explanations of stutter and judder.

A display refreshing at 120 Hz can show each frame of 24-fps film five times, giving the frames even display intervals. That can address uneven repetition, but it does not make the film’s motion continuous: the original frame still remains visible across those refreshes. Even with even cadence, a slow pan can therefore look stuttery.
What can you change if panning shots stutter?
Check the signal and film-mode handling
First check that your streaming device, player or other source is sending the intended film cadence and that the TV handles 24p appropriately. The result depends on both the incoming signal and the display’s processing; a setting cannot correct a cadence problem introduced elsewhere in the playback chain.

Try motion interpolation for smoother movement
Motion interpolation estimates and inserts frames between the source frames. It can make pans look smoother, but the extra frames may produce artifacts in difficult scenes and can give films a distinctly video-like, often called “soap-opera,” appearance. RTINGS discusses the benefits and trade-offs in its motion-interpolation tests.
If you like the original film cadence, keep interpolation low or turn it off. If you prefer smoother movement, try a mild level and judge it on a slow pan. There is no setting that is right for every viewer.

Do not confuse black-frame insertion with interpolation
Black-frame insertion (BFI) inserts dark intervals to reduce persistence blur. It does not generate intermediate motion detail, so it is not a substitute for interpolation when the complaint is low-frame-rate stutter. Depending on the TV’s implementation, BFI can make the image flicker or look dimmer, and its behavior can vary with frame rate. See RTINGS’ BFI explanation for how the feature works.
Use your model’s instructions to find the right controls
Motion features and menu names vary by TV model, so check the manual rather than assuming a setting will have the same label everywhere. Sony’s picture-settings guidance, for example, notes that available options depend on the model and describes film-mode and motion-blur settings.

| Option | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Leave interpolation off or low | Preserves the original film cadence. | Slow pans may still look stuttery. |
| Use mild interpolation | Adds estimated frames to smooth motion. | Can introduce artifacts or make film look video-like. |
| Use BFI | Adds dark intervals to reduce persistence blur. | Can dim the image or cause visible flicker; it does not add motion detail. |
To compare settings, pick a scene with a slow pan and change one control at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether smoother movement is worth the change in film appearance, or whether the setting is addressing a different issue from the one you see.
